Donatos Pizza was founded in 1963 by Jim Grote, who purchased a pizza restaurant for $1,300. Grote didn’t want just any pizza business, he wanted the best in the industry. McDonald’s purchased the company in 1999 with the idea of getting into the pizza business, but this did not work out. Grote and his daughter Jane repurchased most of the restaurants from McDonald’s.
Today, Donatos Pizza has 200 locations in 8 states. It is best known for its “loaded edge to edge” pizzas, especially for the pepperoni pizzas, which have a minimum of 100 slices of pepperoni per pizza. The company has also introduced submarine sandwiches, salads, and chicken wings.
Donatos Pizza was part of Undercover Boss in an episode which aired in October of 2013. The company is still owned and operated by the Grote family and has headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

Ordered a Ham & Cheese Sub, without onions. Of course it has onions on it. It’s dry, and one side doesn’t even look like it has ham on it. Just cheese. Why does it have the option to remove things you may not want, but if I don’t speak directly to someone, it’s usually wrong. I so dislike raw onions.

12/31/2020, at 9:30 pm. Called to find out why my pizza was taking so long, the nice girl who took my call, inquired on the status a male voice in the background stated “ tell him to f*ck off”. Asked for a manager, got Bailey Wolfe, on the phone, asked if it that was a proper response to my request. She stated “ she didn’t hear it” I told her I would hold so she could ask the person who took my call. That wasn’t possible, I thought at that point maybe they should “ comp” my pizza. As a manager she couldn’t do it. Then gave me Otis mcafee another manager, after asking him about the situation , he responded by stated the regional manager would be here tomorrow, and hung up on me. Great business practices. I will be following up with Facebook and Twitter.

Trash!!!!Will never go to this location again

We have ordered from Donatoes for probably a year now. The last 2 weeks we have had a problem at the store on Morse Rd in Columbus. 2weeks ago my husband goes in to pick up our order and they couldn’t find our order. OK that happens occasionally. The following week we place our order which was almost impossible to do. There was nothing but laughing and fooling around going on in the background. It was so loud that when the person repeated the order back to me there was no way to hear what she said. She said it was gonna be a 35 minute wait. OK no problem but after waiting the time told to us my husband goes into the store which was not busy parking lot was also empty. So not sure why it was a 35 minute wait. Normally we have to only have wait 15 to 20 minutes. But then he goes into the store to pick up the pizza. Once again they have lost our order. 2 weeks in a row I hope this is not acceptable to your company

I ordered threw the Plainfield location in Indiana on Saturday February 29, 2020, at 11:30pm online and used a credit/debit card. Apparently the oven was broken at this location at that time, so the manager called to tell me they had to cancel my order. I understand stuff happens sometimes, but I was a bit upset that I had to wait 3 to 5 business days for my refund so I called to talk to the manager about it. He was extremely rude and disrespectful towards me when I wasn’t rude in any way towards him, and just asked if there was any way I could be compensated for the inconvenience. Even a discount on my next order would have been nice, just something to show they cared that I couldn’t get my order, it was too late to order anywhere else and I have to wait days to get the money back on my card. Instead I got told very rudely that he wasnt going to “argue” with me and hung up on me. I wasn’t trying to argue, nor was I rude in any way. I order threw this place so much, but if I’m going to be treated with that much disrespect then I’ll take my business elsewhere from now on.

We ordered a pizza on December 24, 2019 and were very disappointed. The quality of the pizza, I would not have fed to my dogs. It ended up in the trash. My first and last time to order a pizza, if that is what you want to call it, from this company. I filed a complaint, and no body has even bothered to show that the company cares, because they didn’t bother to contact me.

First off, I would like to start off by saying that we have always enjoyed Donato’s pizza…. However, this time was a terrible experience…I ordered pizza on Friday Oct. 25, and when our pizza arrived it was all over the inside of the box…. it was like our delivery person had ran with the pizza box In hand…. our pizza was scattered all over the box…. The appearance was not very appealing…. on top of it being scattered it was a crispy pizza on bottom and edges! So, I filled out this comment section and sent to Donato’s…. I was very impressed at how prompt they responded back to me…. however, my email was sent to a different location than where I had ordered from…. I ordered from Donato’s South location…. and it was Donato’s North location who made contact with me. The manager at North was very nice and apologized… He then told me that he unfortunately had to send my info to Donato’s South since that’s where order was placed…. he told me last Sat. October 26, 2019 that it may be 24 hrs before they reach out and I was fine with that. Today is Friday November 1,2019 and I still have not heard anything from Donato’s South….VERY DISAPPOINTED! Good Customer Service goes along way. In this case The customer service has not been good at all! I’m sure that Jane Grote would not approve!

I ordered Donatos wings tonight. The quality was horrible. It tasted like microwave soggy wings. It was just hot sauced dumped all over them not covering them. They were cooler than room temperature and just not crispy or hot. I order from donatos all the time and the last few times has been less than okay. I could not make the call due to hearing impairment that’s why I used the mobile app. Please email me back and make it right!

Very disappointed, went to the donatos on Charleston & High. Ordered a medium thicker crust with pepperoni, onion, double cheese and green pepper along with cinnemon bread (which was fabulous). I leave very close and can walk to pickup. Ready to watch the game OSU & bite into the pizza and there is less pepperoni then I have ever had, I did return the pizza and the staff was great, however after I did some research come to find out the more toppings placed on the pizza the less pepperoni!!! So the edge to edge pepperoni is misleading. Needless to say I will continue to get subs but my pizza business is now going to a competitor.

Legally, it’s private property and they don’t have to let you use their facilities. There is no law stating a business has to let you use their bathroom. I used to work retail for years, so tired of hearing this lie

I order from the Norton Road Donatos a lot. Each and every time there is an issue with the order. Tonight I placed an order and it said the earliest I could pick up was 1 hour later. Well guess what, they read my order to me and then did not give me my pizza. The kid at the window searches all around looking for the pizza and comes back to the window and says I have to wait another 10 minutes for my pizza because he could not find it. Now keep in mind I already waited 1 hour before I could pick up my ordered and then they wanted me to wait another 10 minutes for the pizza??? This is not the only time I have had issues with this location messing up our order or making us wait because something on the order was missing. Then while I was waiting for them to locate my pizza the employees are pulling pieces of pizza out of boxes on the shelf and trying to hide while they are eating. Don’t they get breaks to eat? Was that someone’s pizza they were eating and then asking for people to wait? It blows my mind that this is how this location is managed. We will not be ordering from Donatos any further. With so much competition you would think they would learn how to run a business.
Carol says
Well here is my reason why I won’t ever order from Donatos again….
Ordered online, gave 2 minutes past the pickup time, went to the drive thru, window opened and man said give me a minute, window closed. Asst mgr came to window a few minutes later and said the wings weren’t ready and they are short handed, requested i pull around for order. I asked her to clarify the order and then she gave me a box of wings, I had ordered boneless. Gave it back and pulled around. 2 minutes later the salad was delivered but no pizza or 30 piece boneless wings. Long story short, 35 minutes from pick up time I was given a lukewarm pizza and lukewarm 30 piece wings. You can keep all my points, I’ll pay more and get better service and on time. This is no way to run a business.

Well I did love Donato’s but I will not be returning. Yesterday I placed an order online and asked for it to be ready at 4:15pm I got my order at 4:25pm. I order two subs and a large pizza I get home and the pizza is burnt and cold. The sub buns are stale. I called to complain and the manager informed me that the pizza is burnt because corporate came in and said they wasn’t cooking them long enough. So they have to cook it longer because corporate says so. I said so I am going to get a burnt pizza every time and she said yes. Then asked about the subs and she said the expiration date was good and don’t know why I am complaining. I asked if they are willing to do anything about it and she stated no there was nothing to do. Well Donato’s you lost another customer thanks.
Amber says
It seems like a lot of the same issues are being commented. I thought Donatos was the best quality pizza place up until tonight.
I am pregnant so I’ve been ordering this pizza atleast once a week for the past 2 months. Some due to being sick a lot and not cooking and some due to craving the pizza here.
It’s always usually the best quality and I order it the exact same way everytime.
Tonight my pizzas arrived and they were disappointing. Over cooked, dry, cold.
So I called in I was put on hold for exactly 20 minutes before I hung up and called back.
The manager was less than friendly or truly understanding even when I complimented on how great the pizza usually is and tonight it was different…yes he credited 20$ when the pizzas were 24$
My main problem is that I could sense the non friendly attitude he had and tried to say it was because I ordered it with light sauce….NO I order it that way EVERYTIME!
It’s always the same and always perfect! Tonight they screwed up and now he won’t just say it was our mistake and I’m sorry.
He was very short and I don’t appreciate that when I spend hundreds of dollars here.
I can see these comments and complaints aren’t getting any results so I guess I’ll just find a new pizza place that will respect the customers.
It’s not always about the money guys…but when you spend money you expect quality and good customer service for the product that they sell.
I’m more than disappointed.

After opening the box we noticed how small the pieces were. We called and the manager said the more you order the smaller they get. Wth I never heard of such. Needless to say they weren’t willing to fix the problem and hung up. Another customer gone but they don’t seem to care!!!

I ordered a large thick crust pizza on 2-19-2019 from the Hilliard Ohio location. When I opened the box there was a large very thin crust pizza sliced in wedges. They gave me a hand tossed serious pizza! Anybody who gets their pizza knows they cut them across to get square pieces. I called the store & he said that is their thick crust. I said if that’s thick how do you ever get toppings on a crust thinner that that! No answer from the kid. I just talked to Donatos HQ they said that store has been testing this for a year! Needless to say I don’t really like their pizza that’s why I didn’t know of this change. Now I like them even less. I’ll never order pizza from them again

Dear Jane,
Hello, my wife and I live in Baltimore,Maryland. I am a Ohio boy born and raised. I have lived here since 1982. I would come back home for the holidays and hangout with friends and go to Donatos for a bite to eat. Years have passed and I got married. I took my wife to my favorite place to eat pizza (Donatos). We don’t make it to Ohio as much as we like too. So we did some searching and found a Donatos in Nothern part of Virginia near Washington,DC. We would take a Saturday or Sunday drive to Virginia just for Donatos Pizza and shopping. It felt like I was back home with friends. My wife love your pizza and subs. This pass summer we drove to Virginia to do a little shopping get a bite to eat at Donatos. We arrived to the location and notice that the place was closed. We got on are cell phone to see if we could found another location. There was no other location near by. We miss our Donatos pizza. We like would like to know if there is going be a Donatos pizza in the Maryland area. I have some ideas for good location. The first area would be College Park near University of Maryland and the second place would be Columbia, Maryland. I hope you give my suggestions some thought and we hope to see back in the area. We miss your business.
Respectfully

I’m sure that papa john’s will appreciate our business from now on.

Dear Jane Abeil,
I am a driver for one of your Donatos here in Lexington KY. When I first started, this was a good family restaurant. With some of the new employees however, that is rapidly changing. Make line don’t want to do their orders until they change music on their radios or talk about things to others NOT business related, which makes pizza deliveries very late. Other drivers I work with call me a nark and dislike me when I tell management that employees started taking out party tray wings after their shift without paying or making large pizzas to take home, which in my eyes that is stealing from the company. In retaliation for this, I am the one who ends up with 3-4 FULL TUBS of dishes when I close as a result, or I am talked down to. I don’t ask for much, but the music they blare out has a LOT of cussing, which is why nobody brings their families (especially KIDS) into this restaurant. If you could see the look on some of our customers faces when I come in the door of how much they just want their pizza so they can hurry up and leave–should give this store an indication this is very wrong on a number of levels. Is it possible to send an undercover boss to this store? You can check this out yourself when I say this is NOT family friendly like it was when I started. By the way, some employees wear their pants down to their thighs, not their waistlines anymore. And sometimes they tend to leave cleaning products near the food tables. PLEASE HELP !!!!! I like my job, but if this is how to run a business, perhaps I need to find another one?

My nephew tried to order a pizza and all of a sudden they don’t deliver to my address. I have been ordering pizza from the Oakland Park store for months and never had a problem. I live in a 4 unit apartment, old people live here, I ask if anyone had ordered from there and they all said no. I think they have me confused with an apartment building that’s 2 blocks down the street from me. My nephew said that his order would arrive within 45min, so after an hour he called and was told that the delivery (man) knocked on the door and no one answered, and tried to call but they didn’t write his number down correctly. I was told it was a female driver. When my daughter called under my phone number, and they said my name and address and seen that I’m a regular customer, the order was put through after she had confirmed that this address had been delivered to multiple times. I’m not sure what is going on, but the person I talked to didn’t seem to mind that they lost a good customer.

I placed an order for 2 pizza’s from the Cassidy Ave. location in Columbus for a meeting I was hosting on 12/12/17 around 3pm. At 4 pm the pizza still did not arrive. I called the store back and they were rude to me, the manager hung up on me. I called corporate and they were very nice and said I would get a call within 48 hours. I waited until 12/18 after not hearing from anyone. Corporate had no record of my original call. They had the wrong number on the order and said I cancelled my order which is not true. I looked silly at my meeting not having any food to serve. This could easily be solved but corporate feels they need to challenge the facts.

Yesterday around 6:26 pm I ordered a pizza and two orders of wings online. It said the wait was 90 mins. I went on and ordered. I had to call back four times (the first time I was left on hold for almost 10 minutes, the next two times no one answered and the last time I was told it would be here in 5 minutes.) The last call was at 8 something. By 9:30 someone finally called to say they were pulling up outside. That was now THREE HOURS LATER. My food was cold and my kids had to wait so long. I feel like this was unacceptable and would like to hear back from you. The store we ordered from was the Downtown Columbus location.

My wife and I recently had a party at Donatos in Lancaster Ohio store number 007 in their party room. Our service was subpar we weren’t offered menus and our waitress was pretty much unavailable during our entire time there. The only time we ever saw her was when she brought food to our table. We didn’t think much of it at the time because everybody has bad days so we just let it go and didn’t complain, however two weeks have gone by and on social media I found that our waitress was slandering us. We were in and out quite a bit die to presents and various party games that we had planned and a few of our guests smoke cigarettes. Donotos doesn’t have a smoking area so the most reasonable thing to do is smoke outside. The most upsetting of the comments YOUR EMPLOYEE MADE is about us going back and forth outside because we were “drug addicts”.
Enclosed are the screenshots taken from Facebook. If we had known we would have been subject to this kind of slander after dining with you we would have gladly give somewhere else. Our son’s first birthday was supposed to be something magical and instill happiness from the memories made. Instead we’re left with anger and frustration due to this employees comments and speculation.
A) We did bring outside food in, our son doesn’t drink pop so we had apple juice. It was his birthday so we had cake. We also had a bag of Doritos for those that didn’t want pizza.
B) I had to ask how much a pitcher of Pop was because we were not giving menus and we spent several hundred dollars on presents, the cake alone was $160 and we hired a professional photographer to capture the event so after spending all this on the party itself our budget for food was minimal.
C) We had a lot of decorations up and balloons everywhere but we cleaned up after ourselves, the place was spotless when we were done.
D) There’s no smoking inside so our guests had to go outside to smoke. For her to speculate that we were running out to our cars to engage in drug activities is extremely frustrating, brings us great anger and, we find it completely unacceptable that she would even think that.
E) We didn’t leave a tip because (1) gratuity was included in the bill. (2) Our service was terrible. We were in the dark for 45 minutes until we noticed the light switches on the wall, we weren’t given a single menu, our waitress was only present when she brought our food- I had to go to the register to order.
I am going to show these screenshots to everyone I know and informing them that if they eat at your restaurant they could be subject to this kind of embarrassing public shaming and slander by one of their employees and, I’ll be advising them to take their business elsewhere.
I spoke to the general manager Jim in Wednesday, Dec 6 to inform him of this and to inform him of my intent to email corporate with this complaint as well.
I genuinely hope this isn’t how you train your employees as this is completely inappropriate, embarrassing and reflects poorly upon your organization.
I don’t really know what could be done to make this right but I hope this employee is reprimanded appropriately, because as of now I have no intention of ever going back to donotos and I’ll be suggesting my friends do the same.
Thanks for your time, Chris Moschell 740475XXXXX

Delaware, Ohio Donatos Store, Always serves Overcooked / Burnt pizza & Food. Does anyone at the corporate office care about this problem. If this is a Franchise or a company store, the cooks need to Know how to prepare food correctly. I should not have to asked for my food to be light baked, But if I don’t they will for sure Over Cooked / Burn it. And if I request it light baked they still get it wrong ? There should be only one way to prepare the food, the right way. Maybe the Oven need calibrated. Seriously someone need to do something. I know Mr. Grote & Mrs. Abell would Not approve of the food this way.

Donatos is my favorite pizza but, when ordered for home delivery its secondhand food, reheated with few fresh ingredients on top of old. I was given credit for another order. As a customer I consider this a health hazard am a senior. The second time, I was again given 1 hour, my confirmation showed ordered at 8:30pm and would be delivered at 9:30 pm, at 10:15 I called the store and was told sorry we are short on drivers your the next order to go out, at 11:00 I called and (you guessed it) I was the next order to go out, I stated you can just forget my order and refund my money. I called the rude customer service and was told “That’s a franchise store not a Corporate owned, you will need to speak to them”. I said well they use your name so I guess you’re ok with the 2.5 hours and order still not delivered, well sir someone from that store will call you. Well no one has called so I guess the Better Business Bureau will get to hear about my experience along with Facebook. Thanks Donatos for not caring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to frequently order pizza from Donatos in Marion, OH. I don’t know why the order was difficult for them to get it correct. The Managers used to make it right when my order was delivered and it was not 100% correct. The past few months the quality has become even worse. When I placed my order Saturday, I repeated it more than several times, explaining I wanted extra cheese and to please use fresh mozzerella for that extra cheese. (What is so difficult about a thin crust pizza, light sauce, extra cheese using fresh mozzerella for the extra cheese and 1/2 pepperoni with the pepperoni on top of ALL the cheese so it gets crunchy?) For some reason that was too difficult. To top that off, part of the pizza was folded on top of other pieces. It was a total waste of money and yet another very disappointing experience! I had been a Donatos customer for over 10 years.

So I call get put on hold for more than 15 minutes I explain my complaints then the Manager was put on the phone. I explain to him he tells me to hold again. When they return back on the phone it’s the employee again saying my manager said all you can have is a 10 dollar credit. I am pissed that the manager sent the employee back to the phone to tell me this information on top of offering me 10 dollar credit.. I ask to speak back with the manager he comes back on the phone and says yea 10 dollars is it. I am beyond frustrated at this point I say to him I will be speaking with corporate the manager then says ok 17 dollar credit. Please contact me about this matter.

spent 40 dollars on pizza last night at downtown Columbus location south grant ave and east main street. ordered around 615 got pizza around 730. first order pizza was not cut correctly even though it stated on receipt pie cut, pizza was burnt, bread was burnt. I called in talked to manager Brenda, who did not seem happy about me calling about my order, said she would credit me or make me another pizza, I told her my husband had not ate so I would like another pizza made. about 930 we got the second pizza and bread. the second order was almost the same if not worse then first order. when we attempted another phone call to the store the call was not answered. the manager to me seemed rude, not apologetic to the fact I spent money in her store and did not get what I should have gotten. when I spend money I expect to get what I paid for. this is not ab out not having to pay or getting my money back its about, the fact both pizzas both breads were burnt and not a i’m sorry or I apologize, nothing, just very rude and no apology. I have 6 kids and 40 dollars plus 6 dollars in tips to 2 drivers, is a lot of money for us.
