Founded in 1985 by Dr. Richard Swanson, SunPower actually had its start in the 1970’s when Dr. Swanson conducted research on how solar cells, which were used only on satellites at the time, could be used in both residential and commercial settings.
With funds from the Electric Power Research Institute, the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as start up funds from several other venture capital firms, SunPower was incorporated in April of 1985.
Today, SunPower designs and manufactures crystalline silicon solar cells, solar panels, and roof top solar tiles based on a silicone backed design developed at Stanford University. The company has projects around the world and recently announced that they would allow Ford electric car buyers an option to install solar panels on the roof of the car, which would charge the battery.
SunPower is publicly traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the ticker symbol SPWR.

We purchased Sun Power for our residential home in Goodyear Arizona in 2020. We saving money but have had a roof leak near to one of the panels. They told us they would advise Arizona Solar concepts who installed the panels come out and fix it as our roof warranty went null and voice adding panels to it. They fixed it in 2021 but since its still leaking and we have water spots on our ceiling same area and more. We called Sun Power who said the put another ticket in. We heard nothing for 2 weeks so we called Arizona solar concepts and they are out of business. This does show on their website. We called Sun Power back and they didn’t have that information that their install vendor was out of business. They said nothing they can do that we need to get a roofer. This is super crazy they sold us the system. We have no roof warranty and this was caused by the installers. Something isn’t right, Sun Power should have another company to come out and fix this correctly.

We had SunPower solar panels installed 3 years ago as based on our past energy usage, it would be a cost saving measure for our family. Now after 36 months, our system has only met our power needs for 11/36 months resulting in our electric company charging us for the shortfall. Our representative had told us that there was a performance guarantee so I called customer service on 12/10 and spoke to a representative who after hearing all if the info said I’d be getting a refund for the extra charges I’ve paid. No refund has arrived so I called and spoke to a supervisor, Kim Reyes, who informed me that no refund would be issued and they’d investigate the productivity of my system. My performance guarantee range was only met 1/3 years and it was only 37 kWz over the minimum number. The other 2 years our system underperformed and we had to pay extra month after month. Mr. Reyes informed me I would “never” be getting a refund. When I asked to speak to his supervisor, he said he was the top person and he had no supervisor. I’m confident I was not speaking to the CEO so now I’m left to research and try to find someone who will help me. This is not the level of customer service I deserve, I was spoken down to by the supervisor and not treated as I feel I should have been. Plus, the representative was working off a script and didn’t always understand what I was saying. I wish I had never gotten the panels.
