Nextel Communications was founded in 1987 by Morgan O’Brien and Brian McAuley as FleetCall. The company changed its name to Nextel Communications in 1993.
Nextel provided digital, wireless communication services to fleet and dispatch customers, and later individual wireless customers.
The company offered a then-unique push-to-talk “walkie talkie” feature in addition to traditional voice calls. Nextel was publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol NXTL.
In 2005 Nextel merged with Sprint Corporation and continues to be operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Nextel’s operations in Latin America did not merge with Sprint and are a part of NII Holdings, a stand-alone company not affiliated with Sprint.
At the time of the merger Nextel had 20 million customers and operated in 198 markets.
