CMS Energy was founded in 1888 by William Augustine Foote and Samuel Jarvis as Jackson Electric Light Works in Jackson, Michigan.
The company was successful, and in 1910 Foote teamed up with new investors to create Consumers Power Co.
In 1931 the company installed a 40-mile pipeline to natural gas wells, replacing manufactured gas made from heating coal.
In 1962 Consumers Power built Big Rock Point, Michigan’s first nuclear power facility and the fifth in the United States.
CMS Energy holding company was created in 1987, with its principal subsidiaries being Consumers Power and CMS Enterprises, which comprises non-utility ventures.
Today CMS Energy has a generating capacity of 6,130 MW and distributes electricity and gas to 3.5 million customers. The company also operates independent power generating plants, which as coal, gas and biomass fired.
CMS Energy is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol CMS, is a member of the S&P 500, is #350 in the Fortune 500, has 7,736 employees, and had $7.17 billion in revenue in 2013.
