Mattel was founded in 1945 by Howard Matson and Eliot Handler, who combined their names to form Mattel. Eliot’s wife, Ruth, became the company president and created Barbie in 1959.
In the 1960s, Mattel revolutionized the toy industry with talking dolls. Chatty Cathy and See N’ Say toys helped the company became the largest toy makers in the USA.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mattel distributed Nintendo products in Canada and the UK.
In 2002, Mattel closed its last factory in the USA (Fisher-Price) and moved all toy making to China. In 2007, Mattel recalled over 18 million toys including Dora the Explorer and Sesame Street due to lead based paints used in China.
Mattel is currently the world’s largest toy manufacturer. They produce many highly popular brands including Fisher-Price, Barbie dolls, Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars.

why is it that some people can have a load of the new limited Barbie doll Dia de los muertos and a great grandmother who has given her first great grandchild a collector doll for the past 15 years not be able to have one? Oh I can buy it on ebay for over 200.00 but cannot afford it. I have written to Mattel but they have not responded. It was to have been released to Walmart, Amazon and Target for 75.00 but Walmart and Target do not know what I am talking about! , and Amazon has them from a 3rd party. Surprise EBAY!

I am so saddened the adult world continues to attack the innocence of children. Children used to play with dolls in innocent relationship. Now we discard Ken to push same sex indoctrination- for preschoolers? The world is pushing children to focus on their genitals instead of having innocent play. This comes from the adult world who is in pornography, adultery, pedophelia even beastiality and more I don’t know about. What’s wrong with you to even consider this move. What is your next project going to be? A sympathetic pedophile doll? Teach children to have sex with adults? Can the world just let kids go with the way we all get here – a male and female joining together to make a family. Can we promote and support the moms and dads?

I find it absolutely disgusting that you are manufacturing a barbie with a hijab. We definitely dont need this crap promoted in our country, to boot its modeled after someone who disrespects our president. I hope your sales plummet.

Shannon Bower says
You’re absolutely right, Carol Prezioso. While Mattel is at it, let’s get rid of American Girl Rebecca. She’s Jewish, after all. Mattel should get rid of the ‘Dolls of the World’ Barbie Collection. For crying out loud, most of them are not white! And the ones that are, well you just know the Princess of Ireland drinks too much and the French Princess is a snoot who looks down on all the other Barbies. I say if they are not a WASP doll, give it the heave ho. I’m a redhead, but I should aspire to be an anorexic blonde, right? Why don’t you get some Muslim friends and read a book for crying out loud? LOTS of people disrespect our president. But in your case you’re just busy disrespecting your fellow human beings who are also God’s children.

Hi,
My name is Laura and I work for Craig Castanos, CPA who is the treasurer for the Global Care Alliance Organization (globalcarealliance.org/). The founder Niles Sharif is a long time friend and every year we donate Mattel Barbies and Hot Wheels cars to the kids in Mexico for Christmas. I am contacting you to see if there is any way that you would like to donate some barbies and hot wheels cars for this cause. It truly means the world to these kids who basically have nothing. If you are unable to donate them Craig is willing to pay 5$ per Barbie/car if there was some way we could get a good supply of them. Please let me know if you will be able to help out. I truly appreciate your time.

Another Kmart “Hot Wheels Collector Event” come and gone. Probably the worst one ever. Probably my last one ever. The promise of a hard to find treasure hunt, or extremely hard to find “Super Treasure Hunt” quickly dashed as the thirty half cases on hand could only muster a few “55 Chevy Gassers” which were the highlite of the batch! although there was a 2016 main line new release which sums up this “Kmart Collector Day”….”TEE’D OFF 2”!!!!! Thanks for not responding to any of my comments as the “Hot Wheel ” market share falls even deeper. Well, going to Mylasian E-BAY now to see the die-cast that should have been in the cases we opened today. After all, its a “Collector Event”!!! Not a “Bunch of mixed lot junk event”. Thanks Tom Smead

Deat Mattel Corporation,
My daughter is an avid collector of your superhero hot wheels collectible cars. She loves any Superman or Batman related cars. However, she voiced an idea of expanding the superhero hot wheels collection to include superheroes such as Martian Manhunter, Giganta, Soloman Grundy, Supergirl, Teen Titans, Green Arrow, Harley Quinn, and Lex Luthor just to name few. Through my regular shopping at Wal-Mart and Target these hot wheels are to keep on the shelf. Please consider expanding the superheros collection as you have the Star Wars collection. Not only is my daughter a fan, but myself as well. I am amazed at how much the cars actually resemble the characters or at least their essence.

There is a female Soca artist called, Patrice Roberts born and raise in the west indies country called Trinidad, she is loved in the community and around the world, If you take interest in her you will not be disappointed. She is pretty,( she looks like a Barbie doll,) It would be nice for Mattel to recognize the west indies culture. Carnival in the west indies is such a beautiful experience, many colors, and pretty Barbie dolls lol Thank you so much…James

I think it is disgusting that Mattel has chosen to make a muslim barbie. Obviously you do not know that their “koran” says that anyone not of muslim faith is an infidel and should be killed. Pure ignorance on your part Mattel because America was founded on 1 religion and 1 God only. You have just added another reason for the downfall of what was once a great country. I played with barbie, my daughter played with barbie, and my granddaughter played with barbie. I consider barbie garbage now as everything Mattel makes. Shame on you. For the attention of the CEOs of Mattel. As the uk and Europe patent holder of multiple sounds into jig saw puzzles, over the past year I have sent emails to your company regarding, your little people interactive jig saw puzzles, as my patents content is that by placing any said piece of puzzle onto a base board respective of what it is made of to create the said sounds, is what my patent was granted on, all response I get from my emails is that your company no longer sells or manufactures these puzzles. But I still see on your web pages you are still selling the said product. I would really like an honest answer. Look forward to an early response . Kind regards Malcolm .

I’ve noticed all your dolls have long flowing hair. My idea is for all the little girls fighting a type of cancer that are losing or have lost their hair. Gentlemen: There have been several suggestions to create a beautiful doll, dressed in pink, with no hair, name her Hope, and send the funds to St. Jude. Since cancer affects both males and females, create a boy doll, name him Josiah, and commit those funds to St. Jude, also. The dolls can be designed for children over three years of age, and bears could be designed for children under the age of three.
I certainly hope that your organization will seriously consider these suggestions. It could create win-win situations for all involved.
I eagerly await a response from corporate or marketing that is not electronically generated.
Thanks!

Thank you for listening, and perhaps your Corporation will consider this thought.

Hello Mattel,
I love all your products and here is a request that I and probably heaps of people would love
Are you ready????
KATY PERRY BARBIE DOLL
I understand that you have made one of these before but there was only one in the whole world and it was really expensive.
I’d absolutely LOVE there to be a Katy Perry Barbie Doll!!!
If you do decide that you will make a barbie of Katy Perry, it should be available everywhere, because I live in New Zealand and I’d want to purchase an amazing product like that.
I understand that the recent Katy Perry barbie had a very complicated dress, so maybe you could make the dress less complicated if that saves lots of effort.
I really do hope that you make the Katy Perry barbie again.
It would be amazingtastiriffic!!!!!!!!!
Yours sincerely,
KATY PERRY FAN AND BARBIE ENTHUSIAST

Hi! I recently purchased the Hot Wheels Car Maker. I was disappointed to learn that, while there were several wax sticks included, there were only 3 chassis to fit the cars to once they are made. Furthermore, there is no option to just purchase additional chassis. Initially, I went to the Mattel parts website, and to my surprise, saw that they were selling a 3-pack bag of chassis for the Car Maker for $12. But when I went back to purchase them, (I wanted them for a birthday party where the kids were going to be able to make their own cars and race them), they weren’t there anymore. A nice agent online informed me that they were no longer selling just the chassis. The only way to get more chassis is to buy the add-on mold packs for $10. Thing is, those only come with 2 chassis from what I can tell. This doesn’t make sense! Why wouldn’t the chassis be available for sale by themselves as they were on the parts page? A consumer can certainly get more use out of a $50+ item if these chassis were available without having to find the ever-elusive mold packs that only come with 2 additional chassis. So in order to enjoy the Car Maker, which comes with several wax sticks, but only enough chassis to make 3 cars, I have to keep buying mold packs? This is very poor judgment by Mattel, and not very considerate of its consumers.

All my 7 year old grand daughter wanted for Christmas, were Monster High Dolls, the new craze, and when your 7 years old the only thing you want is to fit in with your friends. We purchased her one, 2 days later the leg broke, I returned it to Wal-Mart and just got a call from her mother, that the one she bought her, also the leg broke. This is not a wild, unruly, 7 year old, but a little girl who takes very good care of her things. These pieces of crap are falling apart, for $19.99 plus tax, you would think you would make something a little bit more sturdy, you make “Barbie”, you would think knowing the age group you are dealing with you would do something about this. I will keep bringing these broken legged dolls back, By the way why don’t you explain to a 7 year old, why her only Christmas presents are falling apart. She received the Monster High, High School from her dad, I’m afraid to even open the box, if the dolls are falling apart, what’s the school going to be like?

Dear Sirs,
Recently one of your items sold out at a magnificent rate – HORDE TROOPERS 2-PACK product ID 288275900. This occurred within 10 minutes of becoming available for sale online. We have been informed by your marketing representative that there will be no additional opportunities to buy the item. Is this really a decent business practice? The reason I ask is because most successful businesses do not ignore vocal customer demand, and they certainly do not deny the customer the opportunity to buy the products that have been clearly desired since the introduction of the Masters of The Universe Classics line.
There are numerous ways to remedy this, pre-orders being one of the many ways to concretely judge demand.
I would be more than happy to purchase an additional four HORDE TROOPER 2 Packs for myself.
Regards,
Jason G.

Although I cannot see the point of commenting, I have made many comments on other forums I will do so anyway. I’m thinking that perhaps one day somebody in their ivory tower at EA/Mattell will look at the comments/forums and realise that if they had looked earlier and taken action they would not have alienated and upset so many people who played Scrabble (the original proper version). By continuing to ignore the comments they are just further alienating people who may, when it comes to spending their money, just avoid anything with an EA/Mattell badge/logo – I certainly will!

How arrogant can this company and Electronic Arts ( or whatever it’s called) get that they can’t even be bothered responding to all the negative comments they have been getting since they took away the old scrabble format. They could at least tell us what their intentions are, whether they are intending to “improve” this ghastly version or give it away and revert back to the old tried and true one. And as for blocking people who post negative press coverage on their “fan” page, whatever happened to freedom of speech?
amanda clegg says

I am Founder of the group ” Bring Back The Scrabble We Love” on Facebook. It is clear the people have spoken, we want the Scrabble version run by GameHouse back, so we can all end this needless suffering and go back to enjoying the game we all loved and shared with those we have lost contact with. Surely someone at Mattel can work out a solution so we can have our version back and still run the other version? We loyal Scrabble users would be quick to forgive Mattel and be happy to play the old game. Come on Mattel, be fair and respectful to those of us who have been loyal to the game and take the opportunity to show everyone everywhere that you are not too big to care for ” little” people. Please!
LizB says
The big corporations may think they own the world, and can do whatever they like, but is does not mean that your decision are right or that your choices will be welcomed.
Dumbing down the game of Scrabble is a case in point. It is a game for people with a degree of intelligence, who neither want nor need the glitzy flashy effects that your revised version now includes, and it is adding insult to injury to try & claim that this version is better, because, inter alia, we have the option to play advert-free. How could that possibly be an ‘improvement’ when the vastly superior original version didn’t have adverts?
You must think we’re stupid… well, we’re not. We know that this is all about putting £ and $ in your pocket, not about the people who play the game, the friends they have made around the world, and whom you have torn asunder by your crass assumption that you could save money in developing your game by not keeping the links people had made with each other, the statistics they’d acXXXXulated over years of playing hundreds or thousands of games, and assuming that we’d be happy to play under your rules.
You can obviously see that we’re not happy, and we will continue to protest until you do the right thing and at the very least give us the opportunity to play whichever version we prefer… if you do that you’ll learn more than you did by whatever limited market research was undertaken.
It also seems that you think everyone will be playing the game on an Apple product of some description, well that’s another mistake. Why not offer your kiddie-app to Apple users, and bring back the original Scrabble for FaceBook users playing on PC or laptops?
I also have a question which I Know you won’t even try to answer: how on earth can your version on FaceBook possibly have the same number of ‘likes’ as the original version, when it’s only been going a matter of a couple of weeks?
The answer is obvious, because you’ve hijacked all the likes that more than 3.6 million happy, satisfied Scrabble players gave the vastly superior original version. Personally, I consider that to be fraud, because your company has done absolutely nothing deserve those likes.
P.S. There is only one way your company could get me to ‘like’ Scrabble again, and that is by reinstating the original version.
Suzi Heke says
Dear Misters Stockton, Farr and Stockton,

E Daborn says
Totally agree with all of what’s been said.
The ability to choose your opponent is vitally important for women and children (ie: under 16’s) – I had a list of the knob janglers that weren’t a good idea to play against, although just a quick glance at their stats was a good indication.
Timed games – essentially unless you want to wait eternity for your opponent to get their act together.
Visually abusive – obviously not aimed at adults or at least adults with an IQ higher than a pigeons. And no the other board options are not much better.
Poor programming skills – game keeps failing.
Regrettably Mattel are now on my “boycott” list along with Nestle and Monsanto – if I can weed out those two from my shopping I can certainly avoid purchasing Mattel toys.
And No I will Not be “liking” you on Facebook.
On the plus side I must congratulate you in curing my addiction to scrabble. I’m off to play Word Battle.
Padma Rao says
You had a good thing going with Scrabble Worldwide – bringing the world together in a peaceful manner, literally millions of us spread over three continents – something, that even bilateral and multilateral politics have been unable to do so effectively. You have blown a hole, destroyed your own work by foisting, forcing a pathetic, regressive version of the game on to us without so much as by-your-leave. By pushing an aggressive sales agenda without for one moment, thinking of ALL your customers. We are not stupid and know that no company can survive without advertising. The old game had adverts too. But not in the intrusive, selfish and greedy way the new one does – disrupting every single game and causing a nuisance to the extent of turning OFF customers, not getting them interested in the products being advertised. We would all happily pay a fee for our old game, had you only bothered to conduct a survey and ask us. If you are even remotely interested in protecting and enhancing your reputation – especially in emerging economy India -where there are 33 million native English speakers like I, of which several millions used to play the old game – then please RESTORE SCRABBLE WORLDWIDE instantly. Otherwise, you would be digging your own grave all over the world and especially in English-speaking, million-man Asia.

I removed the app when I was limited on the number of games I could play yet was having to wait days to force forfeit people therefore was stuck twiddling my thumbs. This new game is an abomination. Please bring back the old Scrabble. Tweaking the ‘new’ game here and there just won’t do it – It’s badly laid out, shockingly thought out, JUST BRING BACK THE OLD SCRABBLE!!!! And stop sending auto replies to our queries! Can’t you sense that there are thousands of people in England, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa who loathe this new game.
Britta Hayes says
I would like to add my comments and agree with those already made. Scrabble has always been a classic board game, enjoyed by many of us for quite some time. Your new “version” is hardly recognizable as the same game. Could you not have left us with the original, grown up version and marketed the new one to children? I am so disappointed with the results of your “market research” – who were these people? Please reinstate the old online version. Bad form, Mattel!
Kerry Keys says
I continue to sit here, as that’s all I can do. You see, I have a disability. It was devastating enough to have to come to terms with my now immobility. Scrabble was my link of sanity. I was able to connect with so many more people and keep my mind active. I occasionally played Words with Friends, but not religiously like the Gamehouse Scrabble. I still occasionally play Words…but my lifeline to stimulation has been taken away. Just. Like. That. No explanation. No justification. How could you do this to me and the 100,000s Worldwide that are in the same predicament as me? Why would you do it? Why, I ask you? And, more importantly, why won’t you listen to us? Let’s hope we can put this behind us once and for all, when you decide that the opinions of your consumers actually DO matter!
John Lewis says
The new game is almost universally disliked by existing online scrabble players. Complaints are met with a generic computer generated patronising response where you state that “you value my passion”. If you valued that much you would do something about it

Run your new game in parallel with the old one “Mr Mattel”………you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the amount of people who loved and enjoyed the old one. By all means keep your new one and let those who want to play it do so but the majority clearly want the old version back. Its not all about bells and whistles out there in cyber world, some of just appreciated a good game for what it was for. Simple to play, understand and compete in.
Val says
Thanks for nothing Mattel !!! You have made thousands and thousands of people very unhappy and sad 🙁 Do you even GET what we are saying….WE DON’T LIKE THIS NEW VERSION AND WON’T BE PLAYING IT…EVER!!!! I particularly feel for those who are disabled and housebound who’s one pleasure in life was to play our good old scrabble against scrabble buddies with a simple plain old board….yes it WAS simple and plain but have you ever looked at a normal scrabble board??? What you have done is an absolute insult to the original designers of scrabble with all the bling and colours and for the aged, this is a major problem too. I hope you are all happy with yourselves for upsetting so many from all walks of life around the world!! Off now to play Lexulous which isn’t nearly as good as our old scrabble but I can assure you is a much better option than the crap you have forced upon us.
stef says
PLease return the original scrabble. It kept me sane out here in the middle of nowhere (population 5!!!!!). The new board and layout is too childish and being unable to communicate as freely as before is so sad. I miss playing my dad, mother in law, friends and the thousands of strangers around the world.
have only played a couple games on new board and chucked it…. frustrating rubbish it is!
Mallika says
What I am surprised and hurt is the underhanded way you sneaked in the new Scrabble. I have a copy of the red logo US version EA had the gall to term Scrabble. When you announced the changes, you gave us a green logo with an S on it. In essence, both the logos are different. However, when you click on the US app, it somehow, magically, turns into the new one which has replaced the Worldwide one. You did it so we wouldn’t notice and start protesting. That’s playing with the trust of your customers. Why shove the same pathetic game on us which EA had managed to ruin for the poor Americans and the Canadians? Why couldn’t you continue your partnership with Gamehouse and let us enjoy our game? There are games you can customize, and then there are those you can’t. Scrabble comes in the latter category. Please give us our game back.
sal says
Mattel,
I will not repeat all comments again, which I agree with wholeheartedly, but leave this message in the hope that you are counting how many are totally outraged by your new scrabble format, and your deleting of the old much loved one – hoping that the sheer numbers of disgruntled scrabble players will cause you to rethink, or whatever you can do to restore scrabble to its old format!………………….. PLEASE LISTEN TO US………………….
russ says
In a world already saturated with americanisms do we really need a board that looks like a fast food shop and a dumbed down version. Scrabble is an icon , enjoyed by millions for decades, for one very good reason, its simplicity.
Adding features and cramming the page up with ads, smacks of corporate greed.
catherine gillard says
Why Why Why did you change the Facebook Scrabble app? No consultation that I saw and now thousands of unhappy people complaining about what you have done. Hijacked a perfectly formed game and mutated it into a garish, ugly, dumbed down version that has lost all of its appealing features. Mattel & EA are boycotted in my household now – you are obviously a company with no taste, heart or intelligence. Your new Scrabble app is definately deleted – IT IS UNPLAYABLE! Aside from the fact that there is no-one there that I know or want to play with. Act with intelligence and lose your pride. Give us back our game as it was – classic, simple and intelligent. Words you may have to look up – but hey that’s all part of Scrabble, isn’t it?
jean woood says
please bring back original scrabble, it was a unique game in its own right with millions of fans worldwide ! it did not need anything doing to improve it and you really have replaced it with a most inferior game which will never come close to the original scrabble and may cost you millions of fans worldwide
Heather says
Please answer your thousands of messages, calling for you to bring back the original Scrabble…..keep the new one if you must, but give the intelligent, adult, non Americans a choice.
Viv says
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…and again, and again. Give us a ‘choice’. Start a new app with the traditional scrabble we are all missing. You know, the ‘adult’ version that ‘worked’. We’re not insisting you rid the world of the bells and whistles app that can be played on mobile devices. We’re simply asking you to give back what you took away…let’s have two apps and keep it fair! I’m appealing to your greed here. Upload a 2nd app of the ‘traditional’ game and you’ll be rewarded with literally thousands, millions even, people to impress your advertising sponsors with. You can have two bites of the cherry. Give me one good reason the latter would not appeal to you? Just one!
Kathy says
Players of the “old” Gamehouse version OF Scrabble, both adult and young people, serious or casual, able bodied or not, have lost an invaluable social and educational form of recreation. This took the form of a once safe online environment, with the option of selecting an opponent without predatory, unwelcome anonymous strangers with possibly fake profiles, who have been reported by some, to have made inappropriate advances. Many players are avoiding playing this re-jigged game.
Tracy says
37,730 people ‘talking about’ Scrabble on Facebook?? Guaranteed 99.99% are voicing their outrage at the ruination of our most loved traditional game. I have tried the new one… NO MORE. I agree with all the comments… you have dumbed down a classy intelligent game & made it into a 3rd rate circus – I’d rather play candy crush! Until you restore the old game I will not be playing again. I’m so disappointed and angry with the lack of consideration and consultation with those who play! PLEASE GIVE US BACK OUR OLD GAME.
Dom says
Scrabble Mattel by EA is a far slower, inferior and less sociable version than the previous version, Scrabble Worldwide by GameHouse. Have you read the number of negative comments on the Scrabble Mattel Fan Page? Why is no one from Mattel responding to the customer queries? Please listen to the feedback and restore Scrabble Worldwide.
Rejin Gwilhamod says
I am writing to complain about the new format of Scrabble that you have recently introduced to Facebook. The previous version was fantastic and I played at least twice a day. This new version is complete rubbish! So many of the previously excellent functions have either gone or been hidden away. Just a few of the problems I have with the latest version are as follows:-
1) Annoying adverts (I am told that I can pay to play without the adverts – no thanks!)
2) Dictionary definitions no longer given (this was always useful & interesting)
3) There is absolutely no need to notify your opponent that it is their turn to play – this is annoying each time you take your turn and equally annoying to the recipient. This “function” is why I didn’t like playing “Words with Friends” (are you trying to copy them?)
4) No longer do we have the option to select a 2 minute game (or any other specified length of time to take your turn) A 2 minute game guaranteed a “quick game” and was really enjoyable
5) With new version you have to drag each tile up into position when previously you could click on the starting point for the word and either type or select from the letters on your rack. This is XXXXbersome and takes ages.
6) There is no longer a “notes” facility to record any good words to remind you the next time you take your turn. Useful if you have several games on the go.
7) “Chat” is hidden so you have to click on it
Dictionary is hidden so you have to click on it
9) 2-letter word list is hidden so you have to click on it.
10) No longer have the option of selecting an opponent to play against – to look at stats etc – now you just get what you’re given
11) Tried to select friends to start a new game with – only to find they do not “exist” (apparently) in the new format
12) You can no longer see which tiles remain unplayed
13) There used to be a “report abuse” button – no longer there
14) There used to be a “force forfeit” button to end the game if someone failed to take their turn within a reasonable time. Obviously not there now as we no longer have the option to play “timed games” (see point 4 above!)
15) The whole layout looks cheap and tacky.
I’m sure I will discover other faults with the new version – but quite honestly I’m not inclined to play Scrabble on Facebook any more with things as they are.
karen says
well said and you have voiced the opinion of players worldwide thank you xx

Exactly!! So awful! Please reply Mattel.

Hear hear! I couldn’t have put it better myself, thank you Rejin for providing a comprehensive list of the failures of Mattell’s version of Scrabble. Claiming that any of these changes offers us an ‘improved’ version of the game is insulting, and shows the lack of respect the company has for its clients. Kids may want glitzy games for their iPhones, and that’s fine, target the new version at them. But give the rest of us back the version designed for intelligent adults.
Julie Cooney says
Can you please bring back Gamehouse scrabble on facebook, and i also agree what has already been said, and also my disabled friend is missing the gh scrabble, who does not like change, and she finds the new one confusing, and refushes to play it
Eric Randall says
Hello
I want to add my voice to the scrabble outcry. most people will be content if they can choose opponents and select a time frame to play a game in. I have tried the new format and am waiting for the last game to finish before ditching it until these changes are made.

Richard Leah says
How exactly is this new version an improvement on the old when it has had most of the features removed? You can’t choose your opponent. You can’t choose the timing of you game. You can’t choose multi-player games. The graphics are crap, it often doesn’t load! And it has obviously been designed to make money. Are there actually any redeeming features to this new version? It’s a dumbed down dowgrade to a perfectly good game which now looks like it was designed for children. What an insult to it’s thousands of regular players. I’ve deleted it now and have gone over to playing Lexulous, which, while not as good as the old scrabble at least looks like it was designed for adults!
Steve Lince says
Hi guys, I’ve been away. Everybody happy with the scrabble improvements?

Boo Hiss to you Mattel! Rubbish New Scrabble without friends/timers/stats
Keep hoping I’ll see a message saying “oops, silly us, we uploaded the kids version in error and all we meant to have done is enhance the original version for you, we are in the process of reloading the original version and you’ll soon have all your friends and stats back exactly as they were before. The only difference you’ll notice is how much quicker it is and the timers have been reset correctly. We know how much it meant to you and therefore if there are to be future chances we will speak with you, the users, first!”
David Short says
Just how wrong can you be? The “extensive consumer research” was obviously not with existing (Gamehouse / facebook scrabble players. No need to repeat any of the points of dislike already posted all over fb and the protest groups. It is simply an abomination compared to the old game and all the players have lost years of hard-earned stats and friendly opponents in a stroke. Bad move Mattel. Your UK director of customer marketing and brand communications should be sacked.
Brian says
Please restore the original version of Scrabble world wide. You MUST have the ability to do that. You seem to keep trying to tweak the new version to make it acceptable to the thousands of us who are furious about the loss of an excellent game but that is a gross waste of time, and energy, both of which mean money! Why are you wasting your shareholder’s money? I know it has been said that ‘there is no such thing as bad publicity’, but cannot imagine that your shareholders will be pleased that there are thousands of disgruntled people spreading the word about your total lack of social responsibility and lack of recognition about how the changes you have made impact in particular on housebound, disabled, or older people who prefer to use a computer rather than play games on a mobile phone. As for ‘liking’ you on facebook to get more attention….well really! What a ridiculous suggestion!

I echo the above comments. I live alone and have BiPolar Disorder. The old Scrabble was so much more than a game for me. When depressed I used to play in order to pass the hours and it gave me something to focus on. The new game isn’t a patch on the old one and I, as others are, am so disappointed with the look and ‘feel’ of it. Please either bring back the old one or change the new one to resemble the old one.
Lesley says
Hello, Forgive me, but I resisted the temptation to boycott scrabble because I love my scrabble and why should a large corporate bully take that away from me so they can earn themselves more money. I have been trying to play all afternoon but without the chance of a 2 minute wonder I can’t really get into it. I don’t know how many games I have on the go, I add one every time I have no shot to play. Because over the years I played with 20 scrabble buddies and we were always around at the same time. We used to have a 7 day games going for the event of holidays and the ilke but really we used to play 4 or 5 shots a day. That is how we became friends, I chose them and they chose, we liked a bit of banter but basically we all played around the same level, same time of day and liked the look of our profile pics whether it was a face or a flower. So my afternoon of playing your “one-armed banditesk” scrabble has left me with a sore head, frustrated, grumpy because I’ve lost friends and I’m thoroughly miserable. You weren’t designing scrabble for the super mario brigade, we are gentile people, I don’t care about my elo or the gorey bright lights and the endless list of faces I don’t recognise up the left hand side. I’d like to see who I’m playing and only them. I don’t want to invite my friends who hate scrabble. I want to see the board and all of the board without having to scroll up and down, I’d like to pick up a letter and move it, not wait until it decides it would like to be lifted. I’d like to automatically fill in the letters this lifting and dropping really is a pain in the fingers, especially when there is always one tile who really doesn’t want to play fair. We don’t need the fancy graphics! Did anyone ever play the gamehouse version prior to your bastardisation? Hmm no, I thought not.
Mattel & EA you have added nothing and taken away everything!
Please please please change it back or at least modify (erhmm redevelop) your version into exactly like the gamehouse version.
LizB says
Well said Lesley, if they can’t bring back the original version, then they surely must be able to ‘enhance’ their kiddie-style game so it is a 100% replica of the original version.

Apart from causing unbelievable anger and suffering to millions of Scrabblers in the world with this step, you have also astronomically increased the negativity and hatred towards all Mattel/EA products. Take a rational approach and restoire Scrabble to it’s original glory before it’s too late.

I have major worries about the new game in the old game children who played could choose who they played and even view their profile. This enabled them to choose wisely. In the new game a random person is gifted to them, this could be anyone!! I have already heard of a 14 yr old girl getting lewd massages. What if that person had not only sent messages but pretended to be 14 also, major safeguarding issue here

Dear Mattel, your new version of Scrabble is a huge disappointment for PC players!
I myself have been an avid Scrabbler on the charismatic, elegant & classical game for many years… it was a passion that was abruptly brought to an end. Unfortunately, I, as many thousands of us, feel totally cheated by you as a company & therefore have boycotted Mattel Scrabble & deleted all your Apps.
We ask of you ONLY to Please restore us to our old Gamehouse version (as we believe you bought the copyrights) & perhaps leave your new application for your mobile users; everyone would be happy that way.
Thanking you.

Come on MATTEL you dont want to be seen as ageist do you? a good percentage of scrabble players are of more mature years, we liked the old non flashing all singing board, the ability to choose our opponents, move letters with one hand and a cuppa in the other, easy access to dictionary, and to actually see where in the world our scrabble friends lived, old stats much better and easier to understand, You can afford to buy back the old board and make us ALL happy and end up being the bigger person for backing down and admitting your wrong.

Scrabble has always been a game for people who want a little more than flashing lights and loud colours – a game for intelligent people, often (though by no means always) people over the age of 25. What possessed you to make this kind of change to a game with such a long history and so many loyal adherents on FB? Did you do any market research at all, among existing players? And what kind of company creates such a stir and responds with nothing but PR pap? You have handled this crisis extremely badly from the outset – taking ages to make your first response, then responding with anodyne comments and tiny tweaks. By now, you must surely realise that there are crucial features – being able to choose your own opponents, at your chosen level of expertise is one – which are missing, that the beefs are not just about colours and unfamiliarity. Why not address the concerns of players – many of whom, like me, are simply not playing anymore?

ALL we want is old scrabble version back ,why could both not have been put on ,a lot of unhappy people have deleted new game ,players also miss the chat they had with their opponents and housebound and others who were ill also are missing game ,surely you realise that its time you made a positive reply to all who have contacted you and give them some assurance that you are reconsidering what has been a mistake BIG TIME and are trying to do what is right now by putting old version back to where it belongs
Jill Morrison says
You know by now that there are thousands of very unhappy scrabble players out there. Some will try out your new version and a few may even stay but most of us won’t because you are simply not giving us anything approximately like our old game. One thing that puzzles me is, why you changed it in the first place. Did you do any proper market research? Or did you decide for us what we wanted? What was the motive behind changing a product that was so successful? I did try the new game but have now removed the app and will never return until our old game, in its entirety is back. And what’s this ‘like us on Facebook’ to get more attention. It would not be in the least appropriate for me to like you when I have repeatedly told you how much I DISLIKE your game and your policies. I n the meantime I will be boycotting your game and your products.

Nadine Jones says
Why has Mattel/EA Mobile recently changed the ‘Rest of the World’ Scrabble platform to be more in line with the US/CANADA one? The REST OF THE WORLD is a big place. It is extremely disappointing to all the Scrabble players who, as a group have enjoyed the game for many years and now our enjoyment has been taken away and replaced by a far inferior form of the game. Our complaints have not been listened to, they have been removed from the Fan page and so on. Mattel is such a well known and respected brand that it will be a pity for a ‘Word of Mouth’ campaign to spread that Mattel is so unreasonable to its players (Scrabble Players). Please have lost touch with people whom they have been playing for years. This is really the crux of the matter – social networks have been ‘cancelled’. Disabled, housebound people, elderly as well as younger people have lost contact with all their ‘scrabble friends’. This is really devastating for some people as well as losing the pure enjoyment of such a traditional game. If Mattel have the copyright to the original ‘Scrabble’ then they have a duty to present it in that manner. This new version is really terrible. People would pay to have the old scrabble back. Why not give people a choice? Is is Mattel’s decision or EA Mobile? Whosever decision it is – it really is a bad one. To concentrate your efforts on USA/Canada does nothing for the rest of the World. Our online community is now in talks with an Indian Software Company who is prepared to replace – as closely as legally possible – our ‘original’ game! So do you not think that it is morally wrong to stop others by copyright from using the original scrabble format but then not use it yourselves? I am afraid that the brand Mattel will never be the same to me again and I (along with thousands of others) intend to boycott Mattel products and encourage our friends to do the same – at least until this problem is resolved! I have already sent this message to Mattel in Australia. I am afraid that EA Mobile have brought discredit to your brand name. The platitudes and standard responses that people have been getting are patronising and condescending to an articulate and educated community. EA Mobile have not developed a new format – they have slightly improved the US/Canada version you were already using. I am sorry that people in North America have not had the benefit of the the Gamehouse version THE REST OF THE WORLD has enjoyed for many years as it is far superior. Anyone with a brain, that played the game would have told you that. Surely, executives from your company could have compared the two versions side by side and seen how inferior your current product is. Yet you actually expect to earn revenue from in inferior product? Seems a strange business decision to me. A spokesman from Mattel in Australia, when this hit the media there says that there is increased retention and engagement! How can you judge that in one week? This may be true where the product has been released in the US and Canada – obviously their previous version was so bad that any improvement would see an increase in ‘retention and engagement’. However this will not be the case in THE REST OF THE WORLD. A large market for the Gamehouse version was the Indian Sub-continent. English is taught at school in Indian so therefore millions of Indians are fluent in English, will not benefit from the introduction of the new languages and prefer the previous version. With a market that size why do you continue to ignore our pleas. It is just not good business. I really do hope that someone with a brain is taking note of our requests, our complaints and our staunch and entrenched desire to regain our old much love Scrabble game.
Mattel you should be really concerned if your business decisions are going to follow any pattern where this is an example. Your mission statement and words in your ‘Corporate Responsibility’ require you to at least respond courteously without condescension and really really look closely at what you have done.
I doubt this problem will die down although you may think that with time it will. However, people that are housebound, disabled and just like the game will now have a lot more free time without Scrabble to play to continue writing letters, emails, posting complaints and so on.
Please please take this seriously and fix our problem.
Sharon Harris says
Dear Bryan,
I was just wondering why as there was nothing wrong with the original FB scrabble that you chose to update, & I use the term very loosely, the game. Clearly this is about money as there is now an App available for purchase! I tried the new game but have since deleted it as the new game in my opinion, & thousands of others if you look at The Scrabble & Mattel FB pages, is nothing like the previous game. The list of features you removed is too numerous to mention here but “refresh”, in this day & age! I implore with you to at least rethink bringing back the old version & at least giving us the choice.

Sharon Harris

Give us back our old Scrabble game. The person who designed this new one clearly doesn’t play Scrabble. I want to play a game of Scrabble which will be completed in an hour or so, not takes days and days to finish. I must have started 30 games with the new system and just got so bored waiting for my partner to take their turn that I gave up and deleted the it from my fb. I could get used to some of the features, but not being able to choose to play a high speed game is a definite drawback for me.

I don’t think you have any idea what it feels like to enter the world of scrabble after a long day at work, and just physically and mentally unwind while playing good friends all across the world. My scrabble buddies were always there in a predictable routine of when they took their turns, they would chat if I wanted to, or just play the game if we didn’t feel like chatting. This scrabbling world may seem ‘unreal’ or ‘sad’ to you, but it has even amazed me how many people (thousands now) have also voiced the same love for entering our scrabble world whenever we felt the need or had the time to just chill.
If you understood, or at least tried to understand by taking our comments seriously and entering into meaningful discussions with us, you would actually realize that we are not a group of people wishing to make a protest for the sake of ‘having a protest’ and we are not the type of people who are to ‘set in our ways’ to accept changes. We are not going to slowly drop in numbers or start to ‘like’ the small changes you have kindly tried to implement into ‘your’ new game for us.
We are just regular people with a passion for playing a long-standing traditional game of scrabble that does not work with gimmicks and coins etc, its simply about letters, words and intellect.
Please take our views seriously, look at our groups, our petitions and combined ‘unhappy’ voices, and bring back the traditional gamehouse version of scrabble to make thousands of people very very happy again. What have you got to lose??

There are a very large number of people (thousands so far) who would like to see the old facebook scrabble reinstated. The new one is inferior in so many ways including the look and feel, the hidden dictionary, the US dictionary, the revised 2 letter word list, lack of timed games, constant need to refresh,… . Is this something you could please consider?

I would like to know when we can expect an ADULT version of scrabble. Whilst i appreciate that some changes have been made to the new version, unfortunately it still looks and has the feel of a childs version. Please bring back the original game, And i am sure by now you realise i am not alone in this heartfelt request.
thankyou

do realise how much anguish you have caused to people world wide by replacing the old format scrabble which a much inferior version

PLEASE bring Scrabble back. This new, improved version is NOT SCRABBLE. It is not even worthy to be called a children’s version although it is childish. The game has been around for decades in its original form and the GameHouse version was from the original. When a game is good it is good, and there is no need for change. How do you think it has survived for so many years?

I along with thousands of other Scrabble devotees from all over the world am disgusted that you have chosen to replace our old version with this new piece of rubbish. Why not save face and give it back to us sooner rather than later or your name will be mud worldwide for a loooooooooooong time to come. There are many who are now going to not only boycott this abomination called ‘Scrabble’ but also refuse to buy any of your retail products either and that includes myself with 2 young grandchildren to buy for !! Your products were always a popular choice to buy for my children when growing up….but alas, you will not profit from this generation.

I am writing on behalf of all Scrabble players worldwide that you reinstate the version of Scrabble that was originally on there. Please can we have it back.
Caren Philipp says

We have lost all our contacts & fellow friends and most saddening we have also lost our scores which took us years to build. That means, many hours, days, months of effort went down the drain and we had to start from scratch… This is especially saddening for those who are battling cancers or home bound where the network of friendship developed over the years were wiped out overnight…
