Josef Schwartz became a partner at Südfrüchte Großhandlung Lidl & Company. Schwartz had been a fruit wholesaler and he was the driving force behind making Lidl a general grocery store.
Josef’s son Deiter began to make his focus on discount markets, larger supermarkets, and cash and carry wholesale markets. Deiter Schwartz is also responsible for renaming the company Lidl in 1977.
Schwartz copied Aldi’s store concept. The company was ruthless in removing merchandise that didn’t sell and cutting costs by keeping stores small in size. This concept worked at the time, allowing Lidl to grow to 33 locations.
The company opened its first Lidl store in the UK in 1994.
In 2015, the company announced that it was opening a corporate office in the state of Virginia, USA. Stores were originally planned for the east coast, but by 2017, the company’s success allowed them to quickly open stores on the mid-Atlantic states.
Today, there are more than 10,000 locations, including the US, the UK, and in 28 European countries.
On February 1, 2020, Lidl announced a worldwide recall of Kania brand oregano after tests showed that most of the products contained high levels of an alkaloid that could lead to liver disease and cancer.
Headquarters for Lidl are located in Arlington, Virginia.

I must report that the Lidl store in Astoria, NY is extremely disappointing. The variety of products is limited, the cold cuts are pre-cut and are many times uneditable. The meat I have purchased many times smelled bad and when opened was rotten. In general the products are not restocked, the pasta was out of stock for several weeks. We had a lovely supermarket there previously, Best Market. You could go there and get all your shopping needs fulfilled. The isles at your market are mismatched, food that should be stocked together aren’t. You don’ t have the normal products carried by the usual supermarkets. I know you are trying to stock cheaper items but the average shopper expects to find the usual foods stocked in supermarkets. Its up to the consumer if they choose to purchase the usual brands and pay a little more. There is no real cake bakery area, pretzels are not the usual New York bakery fare. I have spoken to many area neighbors and people and disappointed and are not sure what this market is trying to achieve. Mostvof the people in this area are Greek and Italian and this market is not a good fit.

Yesterday, June 7th, 2022, I went into Lidl in North Chesterfield, Virginia. I tr5ied to buy a few groceries using an EBT card. First I was told that I had to go to a “special” checkout line to use an EBT card. Then, when I went to the line that the store employee pointed to my transaction was declined twice. Needless to say, I left the store without my groceries, but quite red in the face with embarrassment. When I got home I checked the balance on my EBT card and found that the store charged me, not once, but TWICE, for groceries that I didn’t get. In other words, they declined my purchase and took my money anyway. I called a number found on the Internet and spoke with someone whom I suppose to be with the corporate office. I explained everything that happened. I expect nothing will be done, though. I just screwed out of $70-couple dollars. I can promise this, however. I will NEVER shoip at another Lidls. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

Went to the store for the first time today and the worse experience ever. I purchased two packs of pork chops and many more items. When I got home I opened one pack of pork chops up and the smell made me sick they were bad then I opened the other pack and it was ok. I had to waste my time and gas to go back with the other pack to get another pack then when I came home another pack that made me sick when I opened them wasted my time and gas again to take them back but this time the manger wasn’t nice and I located another person to help me which I wanted them to go with me to open another pack up to make sure it was good before I walked out the door which I found another pack that was good. I shouldn’t had spent two hours of my day off going back and fourth twice over bad pork chops. There were pork chops that were outdated in there I seen and the two packs I got didn’t even expire until oct 4th I did find a pack that was icy 10th. So for the first time I had this bad experience and not good customer service from the manager. The cashier was very friendly snd just shook his head cause he seen me not once over bad pork chops but twice

I am a contractor here in the VA, DC, MD area and have looked at one of your stores to remove asbestos floor tile in Annapolis, Md – Shoppers Food regarding asbestos floor tile and mastic removal for a General Contractor who I believe gave you our number marked up. I want to send you our bid number without his (Doyle Construction ) mark-up but the office number listed for the Lidl corporate office at 3500 South Clark Street you have listed on the internet – 571-353-1237 does not work.., Doyle Contracting was told that Lidl would be seeking out abatement contractors separately.
Please call me ASAP so I can get our asbestos abatement numbers to you (LIDL). There is a Mr. Farhat that I am trying to get in touch with in your company.
Please call me at 202-359-2236 or and email me at curt@ sandowconstruction.com

My recent shopping experience, last 2 weeks especially, has been extremely poor.
Constantly out of stock. Many staple items like zip lock bags, bagels, bread, advertised meats and stir fry, potato chips to name a few. Every time you ask a staff member they say come back tomorrow they expect it on their incoming truck. I was back three days in a row and no product. It’s nice to keep opening new stores but if you can’t keep your existing stores stocked your losing customers that become dissatisfied.
Your staff should never lie to a customer when they don’t have a clue when an item will or will not arrive.
Your purchasing staff are either understaffed or are incompetent or are not in the loop about order quantity during your expansion.
Your ordeting ,purchasing, and distribution need to devise a software notification system that actually works.
