Luis Von Ahn, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and his graduate student Severin Hacker wanted to create an app that would serve double duty, teach a foreign language and translate simple phrases. Duolingo was created in 2011 in beta form and released to the public in 2012.
Duolingo is a language learning platform and mobile app that allows users to slowly learn the basics of a new language. As of November 2019, the language-learning website and app offer 94 different language courses in 23 languages. In August 2018, the company had more than 300 million registered users around the world. The app has a free version supported by advertisers or a paid version that is ad-free.
Duolingo’s fastest-growing language is the Scottish language Gaelic. Although the language was just added in early December 2019, in less than one month, users have reached 127,000.
The company has it’s critics, with a Forbes interviewing noting that, even after using Duolingo to learn Spanish for 6 months, the CFO of the company was confused by the basic phrase of “Hablas Espanol?” ( Do you speak Spanish?).
The corporate office for Duolingo is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

I had 921 points, just 4 points behind the #1 person on the app. I did about 4 lessons and lost points instead of gaining. I now have only 896 points, got screwed out of many points. Never happened before. I am on a 3 day free trial on Duolingo & maybe a Bug?

I HAVE TRIED TO DO YOUR PROGRAM, BUT TOO MANY PERSONAL TRAUMAS HAVE OCCURRED SINCE JUNE 11 AND ESPECIALLY TODAY 9/11!! I HAD MY OWN SURPRISE AT ABOUT 9 ISH P.S.T. THIS MORNING (THREE HOURS AFTER NEW YOUK HAD THEIRS 20 YEARS AGO.). YOUR PROGRAM IS A BIT TOO EXCELLED FOR ME AND YES I RARELY GET TO IT BECAUSE OF TRAUMA SINCE JUNE 11TH. I NEED SOME “FAVOR” FROM YOUR COMPANY WHETHER YOUR COMPANY FEELS I DESERVE IT OR NOT! I MEAN “CUT ME SOME SLACK” MEANING, I CANNOT DO THIS EVERY DAY, I JUST CAN’T, SO GIVE ME A “BREAK” AND BACK OFF SOME PLEASE. I LOVE SPANISH AND I WANT TO USE IT TO COMMUNICATE WITH MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE OF SPANISH DESCENT BUT WHO ARE ALSO ON “DEATH ROW”, WHO HAVE BEEN “SCREWED” BY THE “LEGAL SYSTEM”, AND I HAVE NOT EVEN GONE TO LAW SCHOOL YET TO SERVE THEM. THIS IS THE REASON WHY I AM IN YOU “STSTEM”! GARY PURCELL

I left a message on your company’s phone number. How strange not to have people there to answer the phones. Anyway, I had hand surgery 2day 6/18/21 and I can’t type for the next ten days. What can you do for me? I enjoy Duolingo and I do not want to loose anything. HELP.

The fonts used on Duolingo have very poor contrast making them very difficult to read (especially diacritical marks) and causing students to make mistakes they wouldn’t have otherwise. I posted my experiences on the Duolingo community board and apparently it is the same across languages. Why can’t a quality program like Duolingo fix this?
