J. Crew was founded in 1947 by Mitchel Cinader and Saul Charles as Popular Merchandise, Inc., which sold low-priced women’s clothing through home demonstration.
In the 1980’s Popular Merchandise started its own catalog under the name Popular Club Plan. The catalog business grew rapidly at 25-30 percent a year. Sales grew from $3 million to $100 million over five years.
In 1989 Popular Merchandise changed its name to J. Crew, named after the popular 1970’s cartoon, Jabberjaw. That same year the company opened its first retail location in Manhattan.
Throughout the 1990’s J. Crew expanded to 35 retail stores and catalog sales in Canada.
J. Crew went public in 2006. The company was taken private in 2010 in a $3 billion deal led by management with the backing of TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners.
Today J. Crew has 400 retail stores, 12,700 employees, and had $1.7 billion in revenue in 2011.

Worst credit card experience ever. Never will I do business with j crew again. Very sad!!! Comenity are lying thieves. Lose a customer who’s spent thousands of dollars over 7.50….that’s what’s wrong with this world nobody gives a crap. All the higher ups don’t have a clue and they really dont care about customers. Somebody should wake up and care for a change.

Word of warning – do NOT accept a J. Crew credit card offer. Comenity ‘bank’ handles the business and is the worst credit card experience I have ever had. Their business model is clearly one of charging fees and interest at every opportunity, legitimate or not. By their own admission they take “10 – 15 days to post a payment” after it is received!
No discount will entice me to take their card!

I placed an order with J Crew Factory on December 1. Still hasn’t shipped. Called twice – no satisfactory answers about when or if I will ever receive the order – first person (after 35 minutes on hold) absolutely promised to get it by this weekend. Still hasn’t shipped. Something shady going on.

I am upset with your inventory levels for items sold online. This morning I tried to purchase one of your new Faux Fur Coats only to discover that the item has sold out within minutes. Not sure how this is possible especially if the item is also carried within select stores and the stores are not yet opened for business! This is becoming a consistent issue for me and a negative trend for JCREW….Further, I am leaning towards closing my account and spending my dollars with stores with more inventory online…. It’s getting too frustrating to shop online on JCREW.com….. Please fix this problem or at least fire the staff that controls inventory planning…. FYI, Jenna was wearing this faux fur coat for at least half of 2016…..why would you plan the numbers for this particular coat to be so low?

I am trying to get in touch with the district manager of J Crew in northern California. His name is David but that is all I can remember. I spoke with him about a year or so ago about an incident that occurred at the J Crew store in Sacramento, ca. About how rude I was treated by the store manager (two) and it hasn’t stopped, instead it has gotten worse. They treat me like I am a ghost when I walk into the store. Never say hello they walk by me like I am a Ghost. Other store employees in the mall say the same thing about them. I love J Crew store but I am so upset and hurt that I am thinking of closing my account. I am a good customer of the store you can look up my account.

They sell EXTREMELY POOR QUALITY TRASH. Overpriced, seams ripped right off the rack – never even worn. Some are heavy / bulky – but not functional, light weight or warm. Not practical in dady to day movements. Heavy weight is worthless, restricting & useless unless you want to pack on extra 10 lbs everywhere you go, giving you back / shoulder pain tying you like a heavy bulky box. Their gabarges are soooo uncomfortable / bulky. You go back for a refund and THEY WILL NOT HONOR THEIR OWN RETURN POLICY TOTAL SCAMMERS!!! GO CHECK OUT THE SHEER MASSIVE # OF UNRESOLVED COMPLAINTS AT BBB, FTC, COURT LAW SUITS IN ALL 50 STATES / CANADA / JAPAN -THEY DON’T TELL YOU THIS – THEY NEVER REPLY TO CONSUMERS. YOU WILL HAVE TO SUE THEM IN COURT FOR YOUR REFUND!
