DressBarn was founded in Stamford, Connecticut, in 1962 by Roslyn Jaffe, who realized that women were taking on more business jobs and needed more professional clothing. The company sells women’s clothing and accessories under a wide variety of names.
The company went public on the NASDAQ in 1982, originally under the ticker symbol DBRN, but after changing names in 2011 to Ascena Retail Group, their ticker symbol is now found under ASNA. DressBarn/Ascena Group also owns and operates numerous other stores, including Lane Bryant, Limited Too, Tween Brands, Justice, Ann Taylor, Loft, Catherine’s, Cacique, Dress Barn, Maurice’s and more. As of 2014, the company has almost 4,000 locations and employs approximately 16,000 people full time.
In 2016 the company had annual revenue of $ 6.99 billion and equity of $1.86 billion. DressBarn/Ascena Group now had headquarters located in Mahwah, New Jersey.
In May 2019, Dress Barn announced that it was closing all 650 locations, with the parent company Ascena stating that Dress Barn wasn’t operating an acceptable level of profit.

I placed an order last year from Dress Barns and have tried to resolve this issue for months. Order # 1449318- 24Seven Comfort Apparel Elbow Length Sleeve Open Front Plus Size Cardigan was returned last year, and I have not received my credit. I have sent over ten emails and chat/support requests with no response. Please send me my credit, and I PROMISE you that once used, I will NEVER use you again!!!
Very sad, I loved shopping at Dress Barn before the stores closed, and now this issue has turned me off entirely to the company and many of my friends who hear the story and experience the same problems.
Martha says
Wow I’m having the same issue now and they’re refusing to give me my refund of $280.00

I purchased a blouse from Dress Barn at the end of September, 2021. I felt it was a little tight (XL), so I ordered the next size up (1X). Instead of being shipping a 1X I was again sent an XL (not what I ordered). Now I’m told you won’t refund my money. This is your flipping errors, not mine. I’m told that due to your error I can only get a store credit!!!!! Are you out of your minds. Gee, this is a great way to make money. Ship the customer the wrong size and they’ll be stuck with a store credit. I’m done with you. Will never order again. Disgusting customer service and foreign representative who will not allow you to speak with a supervisor. DISGUSTING!!!!

SAME HAPPENED TO ME !! i have filed a complaint with the FTC and the BBB

worst company ever. no wonder Dress Barn closed its stores. We been lied to for weeks over our refund. WE WILL NEVER SHOP THERE Again.
connie o'brien says
Your return policy is not clear. It should read sales are final can only be exchanged for dressbarn credit. I used to be a loyal dressbarn shopper. My daughter’s wedding is in June. Because you are a “online only” retailer, I cannot try on the items. I purchase a few dresses and was under the impression I could return them for a refund, not dressbarn credit. I do not need over $300 of clothes. Times have been hard and I need these to be returned for a refund. You are taking advantage of customers. The return policy is not clear enough for customers.

I was very disappointed to learn Dress Barn was closing their brick and mortar stores but super happy they would continue an online version. Well the online version has been up an running for some time now and I have yet to make a purchase. Why? The choices for plus size women are now horrible compared to what was carried in the store! The store had fantastic plus size clothing that Lane Bryant cannot just provide, especially for business attire (classic- not hanging out of your top showing your chest!) The jean selection might as well not even exist now-only skinny ankle length. If all I do is attend summer BBQ’s that may be okay. I, for the life of me don’t understand the change in the clothing brand itself-I do not even consider it on par with the old Dress Barn version. I really hope you re-think your future line and bring back some of the basics of the brick and mortar offerings, but most likely not, as there obviously was not enough cash flow to maintain it. Truly disappointed.

No one ever responds in Customer Service with the new on line company. Items not received. Huge disappointment.

I know this comment wont matter to you,but I have to express my feeling about the
store closings. Over and over I hear people say how sad they are that there will not be dress barn any longer. somehow I think if things had been managed better this would not be happening. Dress Barn has helped me dress longer than I can count.
This is a very sad time for all the people who will no longer know where to go to find the clothes they love. Count me in that number.
Jane Zebal says
I agree… Dress Barn used to be my absolute go to.
I know that I am not alone in my utter disappointment at the loss of my favorite store to shop.
It’s not the same at all, not being able to go in to a store and see and feel and try on clothing.
Too much of a Hassel shopping your On-line store.

I often frequent your stores in (Springfield, MA, No longer open) and Enfield CT, and also Vt. store… I have gone twice to the West Springfield store, only to be treated like I was bothering the salesclerk.. No welcome, coming in store, she’s very rude, I actually thought she was a customer and not a clerk…. won’t be spending my cash there any more.. good bye West Springfield, Ma… Rude, rude, rude… Last visit, 6:00 P.M. 8/14/19…

Subject: Re: Thanks for your recent purchase
I will gladly write reviews on items I recently bought at my favorite store EVER!!! But first wanted to thank you for 30+ years of shopping at Dressbarn and loving your store!!! At first I shopped on the Plus Sizes side. Because of my excessive weight you guys were only store that offered clothes that didn’t make a person look old and fat – you picked designer type fashions that hid or complimented the Plus Size lady rather than making her look fatter. But then after successful Bariatric surgery in 2006 and loss of excessive fat, my clothes shopping ‘go to’ went over to —– Message truncated —–

I can’t believe Dress Barn is closing! It is the best store to find not only casual clothes, After 5 dresses, but also shoes. The service is excellent. It is a tragedy that you are closing ALL stores just beacuse they don’t come up to the your profit margin. There isn’t currently any store that can revile Dress Barn in my opinion.

In my shopping area there are two stores Loft and Dress Barn that are part of your corporation but I never walked into Loft. Dress Barn stocks dresses, pants tops that are for everyone;petite, average, and a range of sizes, so it was not necessary to go elsewhere. Even though what I see on display in the window at Loft is not for me,I will give it a try if it isn’t, then I am at my wits end, where to go for the styles I like at the moderate prices you find at Dress Barn.

OH NO I can’t stand to hear that Dress Barn was going out of business. It REALLY makes me sad. I have had nothing but good experience with this company. The employees at the Dress Barn on Hurstbourn Lane in Louisville Ky.
have always worked hard to please each customer and were always polite.
When I needed a special outfit I knew I could go to Dress Barn and could always find something.
I will pray for the employees whom will be loosing their job.

I have shopped at Dress Barn for many years, often finding a good variety of styles for casual or dress clothing. Prices have been reasonable and many of my items have held up very well.
I have also greatly appreciated the helpfulness and friendly attitude of the sales people at the stores.
I believe there is a place in the market for Dress Barn, especially if it maintains good quality clothing for fair prices.
I am very sorry about the decision being made to close these stores.

I agree Dress Barn still has a place in the market especially for good quality clothing for the female professional, which is one reason the brand was founded.
I am also sorry about the decision to close all stores.

You realize you have left me no one in town to shop at except Walmart now. So guess I’ll be naked. I spend quite a bit of money there and now its closing. I cant believe it

I used a gift card on 2/28 and the balance off my cc, one item was shipped and the other 6 was sent back stating that there was a problem with the address, how could that be if you shipped one item already, well, the items was returned and i received a egift card with a pin and the balance back on my cc, I called in on 3/9 to replace my items, two of the items they didn’t have anymore of, anyway, I placed the order and the rep asked me for the egift card # 6 times along with the pin and I paid the balance again with my cc. I checked today to see when it will arrive and they say I owed a balance which was the amount on the egift card so my order still didn’t ship. I called today and 3.12.2018 the lady kept me on hold for 22 minutes and said I owe a balance of the egift card, apparently the young lady on Friday didn’t know what she was doing because she made where the egift card read $0 balance. Today after being on hold for 22 minutes she hung up on me and didn’t even call me back. What is the purpose of asking for my number if you don’t use it when something like this happens? I called back and I spoke to an rep name Antonio, he said that my order is waiting to be shipped, how is that I received another email saying that I am credited the egift card amount and the balance back to my card? I need to know if I am getting my items or not. I have a lot of friends that shop at Dressbarn online and in the stores and express they have similar problems. ORDER #:ODBC000027117 I just need to no if I am going to receive it or not. I will not be shopping here again.
