Hill’s Pet Nutrition, more commonly known as “Hill’s”, was founded in 1907 by Burton Hill in Topeka, Kansas. Originally named Hill’s Rendering Works, the company started off removing and killing farm animals that were sick or lame, then used those remains to make lard, tallow, leather, and feed for animals. By the 1930’s, the company had changed its name to Hill Packing Company.hill 6

Today, Hill’s is best known for its high-quality dog and cat food. The company originally began selling these products only to veterinarians, who in turn sold it to clients, based on their pet’s needs. Although the label Prescription Diet is still available only through vet’s, many are sold in supermarkets and pet stores under the name of Science Diet. hills 3

The Science Diet blend was developed in the 1960s by Mark L. Morris, Jr. PhD DVM. Morris’ father had been asked to develop a special food for a seeing-eye dog which had kidney problems. hills 2

In early 2018, dog owners began complaining of injury or death to their pets that they believed came from canned dog food from Hill’s. The company refused to issue a recall until the end of January 2019. The number of deaths or injuries due to the high levels of Vitamin D in canned dog food is unknown, but there is currently a class action lawsuit over the matter.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition is a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive, who acquired the company in 1976. Company products are now sold in 86 countries. Estimated annual revenue for the company is $2.2 billion. Headquarters for the company are still located in Topeka, Kansas.

Hills pet knows how to treat truck drivers that deliver product to their production facilities worse than an unwanted pets and use their favorite freight broker (reliant transportation) to threaten the drivers with their livelihoods to sit at the plants for days on end to deliver their product without any compensation for detention or even a sorry or a thanks. There has to be something criminal about these kind of business practices. I even have the scale ticket with the hours and days of how long you detained my employee. I think a hum,an rights complaint need to to be filed against Hills and Reliant transportation with the county and the state of there plants. I don’t think its legal to for brokerage company’s and pet food plants to detain my employees for days on end and not even see a cent of compilations for it.

Why can’t I find the canned savory chicken entree and the savory turkey entree for 1-6 years anywhere? I have bought up every can I can find.
What’s wrong and what are cat owners to do?
I have tried calling and no one ever answers

Tried calling the corporate number listed for HSD. 1-785-354-8523 – for the WEEK! “I’m sorry, we are experiencing system problems, please try your call again later”. Their system problem appears to extend beyond the telephone – HSD has a SIGNIFICANT supply chain management issue and is unable to explain why it is so extreme and why so many products are unavailable. When you call they customer support desk – that team does not even know where their corporate office is or its telephone number or have any method of contacting corporate. apparently this is the only company on the planet without a company intranet and company telephone book.

15 years ago I began feeding my two cats Hill’s prescription diet. WD or MD for weight control. My veterinarians wife told me it was very good food for my cats. My older cat died. But my younger cat is now 18. I am now using Hill’s Science Diet for him. I would recommend it to other cat owners.

Its disheartening to see that Hills Website only accepts comments within US and Canada.
I have a huge issue with your puppy food and have emailed the needful to the Malaysia Hills Representative in the hopes that my email will NOT be ignored. I also tried finding an email address that I could email to HQ directly cause the problem that I am about to provide can be another brand damaging concern, also most importantly lives of so many dogs are at stake ( this is not the Vit D Recall issue) in fact I think this is worst. You have my email address, please do provide the details of an email address in HQ that I can connect with. Appreciate it

I just started buying the 5.5 oz case of cd urinary can food for my 16 year old cat, she previously was eating royal Canin so, however, whatever change they made gave her EXPLOSIVE diarrhea that went on more than a hour, less as time went on.

I do not know what to do now, your food is loaded with hard chunks, some very tiny, some large. This morning I disposed of ALL the hard pieces before feeding her, it was EXTREMELY time consuming. After sorting through the food only slightly more than half a can was left, she is fed one half a can every morning.

The chunks and tiny bits appear to feel like bones are incorporated into the food and not ground enough to be undetectable. She of course has refused to eat this food, tossing the chunks onto the floor, and taking her paw tying to get the tiny bits out of her mouth.

My son has two cats, he’s always bought your product, but they had to be put on the same diet, and his cats do not want to eat this food, they have been on it more than one year, he gave up and put them back on the dry food, which as you know is a problem with crystals forming.

I would appreciate a response in this matter. I should not be wasting close to half hour carefully smashing the food to find ANY and ALL hard chunks, and wasting approximately one tablespoon, if not not more, of half a can, total waste for the entire can is at least two tablespoons! ! Something needs to be corrected in your manufacturing. I have never seen this in the 16 years I’ve had her, so I know it is your company’s problem. I know my son would definitely try buying the can food again if you the food can be smooth as other can foods are.

Reach out to them on Facebook. I had a VERY similar issue (including weird white stuff and what looked like maybe a small worm) in my W/D cans. They asked for some basic info and pictures. Then they sent me the following response. I opted NOT to risk feeding it to my elderly cat and they let me know their satisfaction guarantee would allow me to return to unopened cans for an exchange at Petsmart (where I bought them).

“Thank you, we have reviewed your photos and the white specks are likely fat/starch globules which occasionally occur in our minced formulas. This is similar to starch lumps which may occur in gravy. You can feel confident feeding this food as normal. The hard pieces you found in the canned food is carbonized meat tissue. While the product is cooking, the meat is basically browned or “darkened” by the heat source (thermal screw). This is similar to when you cook meat in a skillet and the meat on the bottom of the skillet can be darkened more than the meat higher up in the pan. This may occur occasionally and would in no way be harmful to your pet. ”

Sorry to hear this happened to you and worried something is wrong at their plant and maybe a recall is coming….I thought maybe mine was just isolated incident since I have used the same food for several years without issue 🙁

I have been a loyal customer of Hills lDiet for over 35 years. From Kitten to Indoor Urinary and special diet Rice and Egg.. I must inform this company I am aware of ‘changes’ we live in a society of change and businesses expecting to exceed their goals of sales and profits.. However, you have lost a customer as of today.. My vet has informed myself Hills has discontinued Rice and Egg for sensitive stomach and skin.. I rescued a kitten this winter, No food would stay digested in this poor thing.. I have always used your rice mixture on many of my animals, however, your meat in these dry mixtures causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. I was special ordering the rice and egg mixture for cats and it worked… I have also referred many other cat owners and pet stores (whom have cats and dogs with the same problem) The special new probiotics does not work.. I have tried all 4 types.. I have wasted a severe amount of money.. Please consider instituting the Rice and Egg back into your program.. I along with others will be satisfied once again customers. I realize there are goals and expectations of a company for their employees and research and development to come up with different and updated foods.. However, sometimes you leave out foods that really work!!! Very Truly yours Linda Miller Michigan

I am very disappointed in Hill’s right now! I purchased for years prescription diet CD and now get the sensitive stomach for my current pups when they have digestive issues. I got a 10.00 rebate form from my vet and verified everything was correct with my purchase to get a 10.00 rebate and sent it in as instructed. It was denied twice without ANY reason! The rep on the phone was clueless and rude and could care less about my issue. I followed the instructions completely and even the phone rep had no idea why it was denied yet I got another rejection notice with again no explanation. VERY frustrating as it is a simple 10.00 rebate that DID qualify for the rebate and even my vet agreed and the phone rep had no idea either why is wasn’t accepted. This is ridiculous for someone that pays quite a bit to use this product for my beloved pups when they have issues that require a special diet. I will from now on have them order a different brand for me and I will pay the extra it will cost me to do so just for the principle of this matter that angers me. I would love to hear from someone that can do something about this as I would prefer not to resort to such measures but also won’t tolerate fraudulent claims of a valid rebate. Thank you!

The new 3.5 oz cans of wet dog food is costing the same amount as the old
metal 5.5 oz cans did. There is LESS food in the new cans. WHY??
