Postmates History

Postmates logo

Postmates was founded in 2011 by Sam Street, Sean Plaice, and Bastian Lehmann. The company operates a courier service in nearly 3,000 US cities.

What makes Postmates different is that they will deliver almost anything from any store or restaurant to customers. Most couriers only deliver food or paperwork, but Postmates will deliver anything they can get a driver for. The company uses GPS and mobile phone apps to take orders and schedule drivers for delivery.

Postmates delivery backpack

The company has used outside funding for start-up purposes and most recently received $80 million in Series D funding through Tiger Global Management, Spark Capital, and Slow Ventures.

Postmates phone app

As of early 2015, the company announced that it had more than 2.5 million successful deliveries and more than 13,000 couriers.

In July 2018, the company stated that it was adding more than 100 new markets to their delivery area.

Postmates Window Sign

The company filed for an IPO to go public in early 2019 and raised more than $700 million in early venture capital.

Headquarters for PostMates is located in San Francisco, California.

POSTMATES SUCKS! They constantly screw up my orders or even go to the wrong building, make no effort to contact me and then complete the order and drive off!! Has happened multiple times! This time it just happened, probably the 5th time, they go to the wrong building and then drive off! We even put a metal sign out there stating where the other units are. I called customer service and they said since I have previous orders with refunds they can’t refund me anymore! What bullshit! It’s not my fault YOUR DRIVERS can’t go to the right building or make orders correctly and they deliver wrong or missing items! So now I’m fucked $20 because your driver was too stupid to go to the right building, READ THE DETAILED DELIVERY INSTRUCTIONS I PROVIDE TO GET TO THE RIGHT BUILDING, call, or even read the blatant sign at the front that says go to the back units! What a joke! The drivers just enter “attempted to contact customer” and then drive off. I was waiting with my phone in hand and watching out the window. Nobody drive to my building or called my phone so actually, NO THEY DIDNT TRY TO CONTACT ME, BRENDA! FROM CUSTOMER SERVICE!! They don’t give two sh*ts about customers, only money!

I use to deliver for Postmates but they will cheat and steal from you every chance they can. When you have an issue you will never get to speak with someone to help. Only a generic answer by email. I will never work with them again.

Dave P Folds August 10, 2019 at 9:30 am

BTW, I’ve never used Postmates….nor do I have an account with them at all. Obviously someone has my card on their fraudulent account.

All phone numbers are disconnected. My card was used for fraudulent charges. I’ve never been to San Francisco and it’s much worse than pulling teeth to talk to a person and report it. Well, you loose the money because I have contacted bank and filing Police report. IT WILL NOT PAY–CARD CANCELLED.

Tammy Robinson July 30, 2019 at 8:53 am

Be sure to add a 1 in front of the phone number and keep time zones in mind

I am highly upset especially with having been a loyal customer of Postmates for years. The Postmate did not deliver anything correctly that I ordered and I was refused a refund and told that my order was correct. Even after calling the actual establishment I ordered food from and then confirming that the Postmate left the additional food there, I was still charged for the food I did not receive. I will be going on Instagram, Twitter and FaceBook and steering all business to other food delivery businesses. The customer service I received was despicable and as a manager in Customer Service I am insulted and disappointed.

I have been on the job roughly a couple of weeks now. Last week I exceeded the goal of two separate Bonus Incentives that ran concurrently. After numerous emails over the last 7 days showing proof that I qualified for the incentives in question, I’m still waiting to get some sort of an acknowledgment that they actually owe me the money. I’m in line for another bonus this week. I will see how it goes. If I can’t get any results, I’m gonzo!

Weszleia Price December 3, 2018 at 2:37 pm

I’m really disappointed I’m being charged for an order that I never received the postmate said they were going to leave on doorstep but didn’t

Dawn Zerphey November 3, 2018 at 12:07 pm

My daughter used postmates for the first time a month and a halfback ago when she went to Chicago. Yesterday (nov 2, 2018) she gets notification for a delivery for over 100 dollars of food in New York (we live in Illinois). She called postmates immediately to cancel the order they pawned it off on the restaurant. They told her what restaurant chain but NOT the exact one. She called ALL of them only to be told it’s a postmates problem. She had to cancel her bank cards, she’s hoping nothing bounces. In the mean time NO ONE at postmates will help her. She keeps getting pawned off from person to person. The police have been contacted. Sure would love someone at postmates to actually help.

So ive been working with postmates for the past couple years and for the most part all of the changes they have made has really helped to improve my experience. Lately ive been having to work a little more often and im finding it very hard to find/get deliveries, i am in the heart of a “big” city and have been clocked in since 430 it is now 630 and i have only had 1 delivery get offered to me. (Which i did accept) so im not sure why the map has shown constant hotspots in my area the whole time if we are jot really busy if we could update this feature maybe add a driver count that show how many drivers are on the clock in your area? Anything would help just windering if anyone else has had this problem! Thanks in advance!

sean walsh October 15, 2018 at 5:58 pm

I just received my PostMates card in the mail and was really excited about starting work, BUT, I never received my delivery bag, SO how can I make deliveries? Customer service is a joke, You cant reach a person, no matter how many different numbers they have listed. Amazon flex is almost as bad Almost. Trying to find a amazon rep at the warehouses when your supposed to be picking up a block for deliveries is impossible as well, BUT at least you can get in touch with a human after a bunch of steps.

Alicia Romero September 29, 2018 at 11:31 pm

I placed an order today and did not receive the order. Per Jamie in customer service, they will not refund my money because I did not go to the delivery persons car to get my or within 5 minutes. I wasn’t notified they had arrived and were waiting for me to go outside and get my order from their car! I thought you were a delivery service “to your door” company. All my other orders were delivered to my door, but Jamie said you no longer deliver to our door. l want a full refund for the non delivered order.

I would like for a manager to call me regarding this matter and change of delivery policy.

Olivia M Thomas September 24, 2018 at 1:46 pm

I ordered some food from Norms last night and was very dissatisfied the food was unedible burnt overcooked and nasty I asked you guys to give me my money back and all you said was sorry for your inconvenience and no I want my money back for the whole order not just for the damaged items I want my money back for the whole order now and I will never ever use you guys Services again! I will be posting you guys on social media and letting everybody know not to use you guys Services because you will not refund you guys money if your food is damaged or something like that like no you services are not good and you guys suck so just know I will never ever order from Postmates again! And I will tell everybody that I know to never order from you guys again!

Chris August 7, 2018 at 6:42 pm

On August 2, 2018 I ordered from a restaurant and made the mistake of hitting “for pick-up”. I called the restaurant who told me to cancel and then re-order and his “deliver” which I then did. I was charged for both orders and when I sent an email to Postmates and I was told that they were sorry but they could not do anything for me about reimbursement. I really thought this app was a great idea and would probably use it 4 to 6 times a month. Now I will never use it again and am wondering why Postmates would want to lose a good customer over this. I will now use uber eats along with all my employees.

KB July 3, 2018 at 9:46 am

I used Postmates for the 1st time. My order was incorrect and when I emailed the “Help” desk, I was told there was nothing they could do. I guess I am mostly upset because when you order for your hungry kids and only one person’s meal arrives, it adds additional stress. It might not have been an issue if they would have gone to pick up the rest of my order or offered a refund; however, that wasn’t the case. I have since deleted the app. I can understand why they are a struggling company.

Jacky February 12, 2018 at 12:20 pm

Auto accident while driving! 3 weeks and not one person has responded.

Chuck January 7, 2018 at 10:44 pm

You complain because people (who suck) don’t have the brains to see a good app. These f**ks make postmates look badly. I have a fine rating and have had zero complaints with their technology.

Sher August 25, 2018 at 5:43 pm

Thats fine and great for you mr potty mouth (and rude too), but others like myself who had the app crash during a delivery and yet was NOT compensated for the 30 plus minutes i waited for the food (despite PROOF), this is a poor way to treat drivers. Many of us are struggling single moms who dont just say “oh well” when theyve made $4.26 for an hour of work. They refuse to compensate me for my wait time and this makes for a terrible company to work for. their only goal is their bottom dollar.

Byron Hall September 10, 2018 at 1:51 pm

Postmates is got to be the worst place to try to find a way to contact a human being because every single phone number that they have posted either is not their phone number anymore or is disconnected. I just don’t get why it is so hard to update your contact information so people can talk to someone live when there are issues dealing with being employed by them

Tammy Robinson September 10, 2018 at 3:36 pm

We’ve updated the contact information. Thanks for letting us know it was out of date

Laurie Matusow February 11, 2019 at 12:41 am

I’m going to call corporate tomorrow regarding a major scam. I suspect someone from your company is logging into accounts, putting in their debit card and stealing hard earned money. I have yet to be paid for my services and have sent numerous emails to customer service. This must stop and I need to be paid.

Patrick December 7, 2017 at 3:47 pm

I haven’t received a deposit for 3 weeks cause of failed verification I went to app 3 days after and was told I couldn’t reenter my account number or routing number email help center and got no where so lawyer office it is not only for 600 am owed but pain and suffering any thing else

PADF attain unending tranquility.

Hi everyone,

Thank you very much. It seems like many people on this board have had negative experiences with Postmates. I’m sorry to hear of your troubles. I’ve been working for Postmates for about 1 month. Not to sound particularly philosophical but I’ve discovered that like most things in life my experiences as a courier reflect and correlate strongly to my overall state of mind. When I bring and exude good energy in line with Sinequanonology, I tend to receive it back–sometimes overabundantly financially and interpersonally. I have consistently received tips as much as $40 by chatting up the innumerable gorgeous healthy young ladies who use our service. They love me and I love them. It’s all love. Like Kenny Kravitz said we have to: “Let Love Rule” including in our return trips to Curacao and the most pleasurable realms of Tropical Paradise.

Janell Carmona November 6, 2017 at 9:36 am

Customer service sucks! I contacted them to explain that my order was incorrect and was unable to eat the food that was delivered 🙁 (after waiting so patiently) customer service contacted me to explain that it is not their fault that the order was incorrect, in other words to bad to sad! So I basically had to throw $40.00 in the trash Thanks Postmates. I should’ve just used Uber Eats like I usually do.
#Postmates Sucks and it’s expensive.
I removed the name of the restaurant because I feel that Postmates is responsible for making sure that customers using this service are satisfied.

Danielle Ennis October 21, 2017 at 8:43 am

I had a HORRIBLE experience using Postmates in Charlotte, NC as well. I only used them once, and was very skeptical about doing so especially after my co-worker told me that she was charged twice for her order (a total of more than $50) and had a difficult time getting a refund. Reluctantly, I ordered from Tijuana Flats. My order was never delivered to me. Like many others that have commented, I tried to reach out to Customer Service via email. I sent them a long elaborate email about what had happened to me. After several hours of waiting, a Customer Service Rep proceeded to tell me that it was my fault. She stated that I didn’t answer my phone or texts. I told her that I was standing in the lobby of my workplace and was looking when the alleged phone call occurred along with Company security and our administrative staff. No one saw anyone from Postmates arrive. We even checked with the company next door. My order was not delivered to me, neither was it returned to the restaurant! This is VERY unprofessional…I also never got my refund. That was my FIRST and LAST time using this company…

Postmates have not gotten back to me yet concerning a bonus.I’m starting to think this company is full of s**t! I will start the process of suing them for false advertisement. I’ve tried NUMEROUS TIMES to contact customer service and my emails have went unanswered

Bill October 4, 2017 at 2:51 pm

Sent Postmates message after message to start with them and I get nothing.

BEVERLY BONHAM March 30, 2018 at 1:10 pm

I haven’t received my bonus either after about 1 to 2 dozen emails THEY don’t CARE This is even after it was verified All you get is a new person asking the same thing or the same info that has been given to them a dozen times They need something to happen to them for breaching the contract

TJ June 12, 2019 at 4:39 pm

I got the same run around!!!!! I have had over 20 emails back and forth with the customer service and I have gotten a different person every single time I have contacted them. mine was the referral bonus!!! I was referred and the only person that was referred and all they can say was that they seen it was used but it wasn’t my account.. Well dip SH*T who do you think it was… Very aggravated that they can do this to their delivery driver and pay SH*T for the deliveries….
Customer service SUCKS with this company and I will definitely not refer anyone to POSTMATES!!!!!!

Erwin D. Jones October 3, 2017 at 4:17 pm

Haven’t used postmates, but someone who stole my debit card # (twice) did. Not happy that no one asks to see the card when food is purchased, if you did then this would not have happened, lots of exposure to liabiilty. Thanks to this wonderful experience, I WILL NEVER USE POSTMATES.

Alexandria Anderson August 27, 2017 at 6:24 pm

Yesterday evening I ordered a $12 bowl of Ramen and am being charged nearly $40. The customer service rep that I was connected with sent me a list of possible reasons why I was being charged so much and extremely vague fees that may or may not have been added to my bill. Then proceeded to add that Postmates is very up front about everything with their customers. FALSE! If these additional fees and upcharges had been disclosed before I ran my card I would not have ordered. Even on my final receipt these charges are not broken down or reflected. If you’re in Atlanta DO NOT USE POSTMATES! I should have just used Caviar.

Alexandria Anderson August 29, 2017 at 1:36 pm

Update: After 3 days of being ignored and givin the runaround I was able to be connected to a supervisor in the financial department who was able to refund me the full $17 deliver fee I was charged.

Tamika L Ross October 4, 2017 at 10:42 am

How did you contact them?

robert love November 6, 2019 at 5:38 pm

Ashley August 1, 2017 at 1:44 pm

I would highly advise against using Postmates. Last night I ordered for the first time and several things from my order were missing, everything was 85 degrees, and they do not have an option to contact them either via chat or phone, so I was forced to wait for a response via email. Once I did receive a response, I was not apologized to for the cold food and was offered a refund for less than the missing items. With an exceptionally high delivery fee ($13 and some change) I expect a much better delivery experience. Customer service has been far better in the past from Doordash and GrubHub. I understand that experiences may vary with individual restaurants and drivers, but the fact that I didn’t receive so much as an apology for the state of my very expensive order is what was ultimately made this a very negative experience.

Mike harvey July 15, 2017 at 1:07 pm

Never received my order and they are refusing to issue a refund … worst company

postmates fleet service June 27, 2017 at 1:15 am

I’ve worked for Postmates for 3 months full time as a driver in Los Angeles then I noticed that the dispatchers were using there application to open my camera, emails, listen and record my phone calls and track my GPS then sending people to harass me while I’m working. Very unethical and law breaking bunch of people that do not care about the customers or drivers. When you call or text to display an issue they tell you to keep it to yourself and lie to the higher ups. Worst company to work for.

Christine June 23, 2017 at 3:38 pm

They randomly suspended my payment method on their website a while back, and refuse to lift the suspension. Would actually have liked to have been a customer, but I guess they don’t want me.
They are refusing a valid form of payment for no reason at all.
Get your s**t straight, PM

No wonder it’s dead slow, you’re refusing customers.

Chance Trahan June 23, 2017 at 1:59 pm

Do yourself a favor and just sue Postmates, look up a ligation lawyer and just sue them instead

tina z June 20, 2017 at 11:35 pm

the driver stole half of my order tonight! I saw my bag from olive garden in her car as she ran off my driveway. they are also overcharging my credit card 40. I have the receipt for 61. fraud! I will be reporting this company to my back and the bbb.

Debra K May 6, 2017 at 9:37 am

In early April I was sick and wanted an amazing burger to be delivered to my home. I don’t eat burgers often and because I was sick I wanted a very special and expensive burger from The Royale. I ordered my burger rare and it came to me medium well at best. I ordered Mayo (I don’t keep it in my home) and I got everything but Mayo such as ketsup and mustard both. I wanted my burger with bacon and blue cheese crumbles and got neither. I also ordered sweet potato chips and was given chips and pico. In essence I got a dry, plain, overcooked burger with an undesirable side dish. My point is that I could’ve driven to Hardee’s for a decent burger but I wanted an extraordinary burger delivered to me. Extraordinary comfort food.

I immediately complained and got no response for close to two weeks. I’m then told that I didn’t submit my order correctly. They blamed me and suggested that I didn’t know how I wanted my own burger or for being too stupid to know how to place an order online. I responded and again I waited. I responded again…and again and again. FINALLY , today I get a response that I will be reimbursed $2.83!!!!!! Obviously someone’s intent was to “slap me in the face” for all of my complaining.

This was my first and last experience with Postmates. The only positive was that I had a pleasant driver. What happened to integrity and giving a quality service, not to mention CUSTOMER SERVICE????

Bernie Briggs April 25, 2017 at 7:15 pm

Please mail me a postmate card so I can continue ordering food for customers my postmate card along with my wallet has been stolen I need another postmate card I’m in your contract Bernie Briggs you have my address please mail me another postmate card thank you

I just happen to love Postmates I give them 5 stars my job slow down and postmate has been a blessing the only thing that I’m having problems with its getting another postmate card mail to me I tried on the app but I’m having problems solar postmate can order me another card and mail it to me I’ll add another star

sabreena April 20, 2017 at 6:08 pm

Theres needs to be a phone number!!!!

Brian April 6, 2017 at 3:59 pm

Yeah, Postmates is garbage, including their customer service and the independent contractors (i.e., delivery persons) they employ. Postmates has truly created the perfect roadmap regarding how to fail as a business.

Kalef April 21, 2017 at 12:57 pm

I have been working for postmates since April 1 of this year and have not received a payment yet what do I do? Every email and text message I send out I never get a response back who do I contact this has been going on a month?

Dane Gibson April 5, 2017 at 2:23 pm

Jane it is unfortunate for postmates, apart from atrocious partner service, postmates also bas mechanisms to cheat its workers out of their personal earnings by knowingly issuig debit cards and dispataching to merchants who donr accept them….

I can assure you I will take this media and my state’s at attorney general office will hear my complaint ….futhermore your corporate office will be made aware of these extortionist tactics….

yours truly

A very upset Dane Gibson

Who will not settle for anything less than my refund

Jon Kawaguchi March 27, 2017 at 6:18 pm

Think twice about using POST MATES – there is no phone number to call if you have a problem – Why is that? I placed an order but I cant tell if it went through and I need to add delivery comments. All of the phone numbers I can find are disconnected.

Meeshani Balkissoon February 11, 2017 at 7:45 pm

To whomever this may concern;

On February 11, 2017, my coworker and I ordered food with Postmates on my account. We waited, but our food never arrived at our work place. I wrote to your customer service to find out what happened

Your Customer Service Professional Shelbee H. responded back basically telling me it was my fault that we hadn’t gotten our food because I didn’t pick up my phone.

First–the driver never called my phone. If he had, I would have picked up and let him know that I would be outside in a couple of minutes.

Second–the driver didn’t even bother trying to walk into our place of work to try and find me. He just sat in his car beside our work place before he left with the food we had paid for–and yes, I have a screenshot of the fact he just sat there.

Third–being that my coworker and I work in a customer service environment, it is NOT appropriate to blame it on the customer.

After providing Shelbee with my phone number and delivery address, Shelbee agreed to give me a refund, but still blamed it on me having the incorrect information on my account. I went and checked my account and OF COURSE I DIDN’T HAVE MY OWN INFORMATION WRONG.

Your company needs to make sure your employees know how to actually do their job correctly.

Kimberley Goodwin February 6, 2017 at 12:19 am

I am a customer at 5314 Hillen Drive in Oakland California. I have been forced to write you because your company has placed our account on hold. About five-days ago I ordered a large order from Popeyes but it never arrived. When I tracked said order, your system indicated that the order had been delivered. I couldn’t call anyone to inquire what happened, so I ordered the same thing again but this time at a different Popeye’s in Oakland. Fortunately, I received this order. Later that evening, I received an email from Postmates informing me that my account was placed on hold due to suspicious activity. I didn’t expect this. I did expect an apology but I didn’t expect to be even further inconvenienced. Ironically, if the Postmates courier had properly delivered my order. I would never have ordered a second order from Popeye’s. It is now five days later and I have yet to receive an apology, a resolution or an explanation for this pitiful policy you have enforced. I am exceptionally upset, for good reason, and I plan to tell anyone who has an ear about your policies and procedures. I order almost daily from Caviar, GrubHub, Doordash, and Eat24 and so I feel confident that I know a few things about your competition, and I can assure you that your customer service policies are the worst. If you have a customer service phone number, it must be a closely guarded secret, because I have never been privy to such a number. All the other food service providers are happy to provide an actual phone number to their customers, just in case problems arise that can not be easily resolved by system e-mail. No, not Postmates. I always got the imimpression that Postmates was not concerned with their customers’ satisfaction. If that’s the case, then you are doing a great job in providing the very worst in customer care. Great job. Keep up the bad work! By the way, I shared by awful experiences with your company on FACEBOOK, Twitter, and Instagram
