Charley’s Grilled Subs was founded by current CEO Charley Shin in 1986. Shin grew up working in his mother’s Korean/American restaurant, but a trip to New York resulted in Charley discovering the classic Philly Steak submarine sandwich. Shin convinced his mother to sell the restaurant and try something different.
This restaurant chain is known for turning the grill around to face customers, so they can see their food being prepared, rather than hiding it in the kitchen. Charley’s Grilled Subs is known for offering a wide variety of sandwiches including the traditional Philly steak sub, teriyaki chicken, habanero chicken, spicy Asian BBQ, and the South Philly sub.
Today, Charley’s Grilled Subs has 500 locations in 46 states, with most of these being franchised operations. There are also Charley’s locations in 16 other countries, including Japan, Canada, and Saudi Arabia.
