W.R. Grace & Co. was founded in 1854 by William Russell Grace who had left Ireland due to the potato famine and moved to Peru. Grace started the company to buy harvested guano (bird droppings) in Peru which it then sold in North America and Europe.
Guano has high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus and was used for gunpowder and fertilizer.
Today the company operates through three major segments. Grace Catalyst Technologies produces catalysts used in chemical manufacturing processes. Grace Construction Products manufactures concrete and specialty building materials. Grace Materials Technologies manufactures sealants, coatings, and materials.
