Southern Nuclear, a subsidiary of the company, began providing services to nuclear power plants in 1991.
In 1996 Southern Communications Services began providing digital wireless communications services to Southern Company’s subsidiaries as well as the public.
In 2002 the company entered the the retail gas market.
Today Southern Company is one of the largest electricity distributors in the United States with 4.4 million electricity customers in the Southeast. The company also provides management services and energy consulting to institutions and businesses.
