J.P. Rouse founded his first supermarket in Thibodaux, Louisiana, in 1923. Initially named City Produce Company, Rouse purchased produce from local farmers and shipped the excess around the US.
Today, the company operates a chain of grocery supermarkets in the states of Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi with more than 6,500 employees.
In 2013, Rouses expanded into Alabama by taking ownership of six Belle Foods stores in the Mobile area.
In 2016, Rouses acquired LeBlanc’s Food Stores, expanding its presence in the metro Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area with 9 additional locations.
All LeBlanc’s Food Stores were rebranded as Rouses Markets.
Rouses continue to expand. In January 2023, Rouses planned to open a new Bilioxi, Mississippi, location within days.
In a local news media post, Rouses was listed as the favorite market of locals living in the state of Louisiana.
