Mazda North America began operating in the United States in 1970 in Compton, California. At that time, the company offered only 1 model of car (the RX2). The company expanded rapidly, mainly due to their unique Wankel engines, which were no longer made as soon as 1978.
In the 1980’s and 90’s, the company saw tremendous success with several of their vehicles, especially the Miata. The USA branch of this Japanese company has more than 20,000 employees and in 2007, saw their best sales since 1994. The company moved headquarters in 1997 from Compton, California, to Irvine, California.
Mazda sold more than 26,000 vehicles in the first 6 months of 2016. Former CEO Jim O’Sullivan retired in 2015 and was replaced by global sales CEO Masahiro Moro.
