In 2012, Sam Rosen had to help his girlfriend move from her flooded apartment. They stored her items in a self storage location, but when a winter storm hit just a week later, she needed to find her snow boots.
After spending hours going through box after box, Rosen thought that there had to be a better way. MakeSpace was founded in 2013, along with Rosen’s friend Rahul Gandhi.
MakeSpace is different from self-storage units in that clients make a call and MakeSpace will deliver a minimum of 4 storage containers, each with the ability to hold 100 pounds. Pack the bin and mark each one with a short label, such as Bob’s Shoes. Call MakeSpace when you are ready to have the boxes picked up. MakeSpace then takes pictures of all of your items and scans each bin’s bar code to create an online visual catalog of your items. You can order any of your items back for return within 48 hours for $29.
If you don’t need any of the items and you simply want to store them, those 4 boxes cost $25 a month to store.
In May 2014, the company raised $8 million in Series A funding. As of March 2020, the company operates in 24 cities and Canada.
In March 2020, MakeSpace created its new Seasonal Closet service, where clients can store seasonal items and have them delivered to their home twice a year for only $29 a month.
