Founded in 1926 and originally named Camp Kugaho, Kanakuk Kamps is a Christian-operated summer camp for children of all ages.
Today, Kanakuk Ministries remains under the decades-long leadership of Joe White, and his wife Debbie-Jo, Vice President, who inherited their roles from Joe’s parents in the 1970s.
Their son, Cooper, is also on the board of directors, and daughter Jamie Jo serves as the organization’s Director of Alumni Engagement.

Former Director Pete Newman went to prison in 2010 for sexually abusing boys at the camp. Some believe that the abuse goes much further than just Newman but non-disclosure agreements made by some family members prevent further investigation.
In February 2022, a court awarded almost $30 million to the victims of sexual assault and abuse at the camps.
