Eaton was founded by Joseph O. Eaton, his brother-in-law Henning O. Taube, and Viggo V. Torbenson as the Torbenson Gear and Axle Co. in 1911.
The Torbenson Axle Company was incorporated in 1916, and a year later it’s largest customer, Republic Motor Truck Company, bought out the company.
In 1923, Eaton bought the company back from Republic, changing the name to Eaton Axle and Spring Company.
The company began to expand through acquisitions and began to diversify its business.
Today Eaton has diversified operations, including electrical products, systems and services for power transmission, distribution, and control, lighting products, wiring products, hydraulics for industrial and mobile equipment, pnuematic systems for commercial and military use, and powertrain systems.
Eaton is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ETN, is a member of the S&P 500, is #194 in the Fortune 500, has over 100,000 employees, and had $22.23 billion in revenue in 2013.
