Ashland Oil Inc was founded in 1924 by Paul G. Blazer as the Ashland Refining Company. The company acquired several other companies in the following years.
In 1963 the company began to diversify and added petrochemicals with the acquisition of R.J. Brown Company. In 1991 Ashland bought The Permian Corporation and merged it Scurlock Oil Company to make a new subsidiary, The Scurlock Permian Corporation.
Today Ashland Inc has four wholly-owned divisions: Ashland Specialty Ingredients which includes pharmaceutical and food and beverage, Ashland Performance Materials which includes composite polymers and adhesives, Ashland Consumer Markets (Valvoline) which is one of the largest producers of motor oil in the U.S., Ashland Water Technologies which makes chemical and non-chemical water treatment products.
