George Adler and his father in law, began a very small business in 1961, selling 4 wheel drive parts, mainly for Jeep customers, out of his house. Their $5,000 investment paid off when they were able to open two brick and mortar locations in 1976, along with selling parts from a mail-order catalog.

George Adler’s son, Greg, now works as CEO.

By 1982, the company had 5 retail locations. In 1988, the company expanded vertically by manufacturing some of its own parts, under the brand name Pro Comp. The Pro Comp name is now one of the biggest selling brands of 4 wheel drive components.

In 1999, the company again made inroads by becoming one of the first 4 wheel drive parts companies to offer items using an online site.

In 2016, Polaris, Inc., acquired 4 Wheel Parts for an estimated $665 million.

In January 2020, a group of Utah doctors sued the company, stating that 4 Wheel Parts was working against the Clean Air Act by selling “defeat devices” which rendered air pollution controls on vehicles useless.

4 Wheel Parts still maintains its corporate office in Compton, California.
