The business grew quickly in the 60s through aggressive marketing.  By 1966, there were 145 franchise locations.

In 1972, Pizza Hut went public and rapid growth continued.  The company merged with Pepsi in 1977 and became a division of the soft drink company.

In 1986, the 5000th franchise was opened.

In 1994, growth finally began to slow.  In 1997, Pepsi packaged all their restaurant holdings which included Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell and spun them off as Yum! Brands.

As of 2018, are currently over 18,000 Pizza Hut locations operating under Yum! Brands in 94 countries worldwide.

Pizza Hut announced at the beginning of 2019 that they intended to hire more than 11,000 workers in the US in the coming year, although earnings in February of that same year were flat for the pizza chain.

Due to the coronavirus and subsequent quarantine, the parent company of Pizza Hut, filed for bankruptcy in July 1, 2020.

The Pizza Hut corporate office is located in Plano, Texas.

Buffalo Wild Wings Corporate Office

Buffalo wild wings logo

Buffalo Wild Wings (or BW3 for short) was founded in 1982 after friends James Disbrow and Scott Lowery were unable to find a good place to eat chicken wings in Kent, Ohio.  They decided to open their own restaurant and Buffalo Wild Wings & Weck opened in Columbus, Ohio.  A year later, they opened a second location in the Columbus suburb of Westerville.

The company began to offer franchises and the company took off. The name of the company was eventually shortened to just Buffalo Wild Wings but the nickname BW3 or B-Dubs has stuck.

A former employee filed a federal lawsuit in May 2019 stating that the company promoted a racially hostile work environment and that managers allowed employees to discriminate and refuse service to blacks and others if they felt they wouldn’t receive good tips.

Chick-Fil-A Corporate Office

chick fil a logo

Chick-Fil-A was started in 1946 by S. Truett Cathy with the opening of the Dwarf Grill (now called the Dwarf House) in the Atlanta suburb of Hapeville, Georgia. In 1961, Cathy discovered a pressure cooker that could make a chicken sandwich as fast as a hamburger and Chick-Fil-A was born.

In 1967, the first Chick-Fil-A opened in the Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta.  The chain expanded quickly in the 70s and 80s by opening locations in suburban mall food courts. In 1986, the first freestanding location was opened.  The company continued to expand with mostly freestanding locations for the rest of the 80s and 90s.

Truett Cathy was a devout Southern Baptist who began taking Sundays off because he was tired. The store has kept this mantra ever since.

chick fil a meal The company has donated more than $5 million to groups that fight against same-sex marriage. This changed in November 2019 when the company announced that it would withdraw its support of anti-LGBTQ groups and instead focus on homelessness, education, and hunger.  This decision seems to have angered both sides.

Chick-Fil-A currently has over 2,363 locations in 39 US states, Mexico and the Philippines.  The Chick-Fil-A corporate office is located in College Park, Georgia.

Chipotle Corporate Office

Chipotle was founded in 1993 by Steve Ells. Their first location was a former Dolly Madison ice cream location. The second and third locations were added in 1995. An additional five Denver stores were added the following year.

In 1998, with 16 locations in Colorado, Chipotle sought outside investors to scale the business more quickly. The largest investor was McDonalds.  The first stores outside Colorado were opened in Columbus, OH and Minneapolis, MN the following year. The company continued to expand and eventually went public (IPO) in 2006.

In January 2015, the company pulled Carnitas from its menu in 1/3 of their locations, citing animal welfare issues with a pork supplier.  The company used “rolling blackouts” in which the stores without pork were rotated until finally resolving the issue in the fall of 2015.

In October 2015, over 40 people were confirmed sick after eating at Chipotle locations in Washington and Oregon.  12 needed to be hospitalized.  The cause was discovered to be E. Coli.  The company was forced to close 43 stores as a precaution. The CDC announced that the company could reopen all locations in February 2016.

As of late 2015, Chipotle currently has over 2,010 locations in 43 states.  International locations include Ontario, London and Paris. The company had $4.5 billion in sales in 2015.

Due to the coronavirus, the company began opening new locations with drive-thru service in 2020.

In September 2020, Chipotle began offering an in-app group ordering capability, as well as a family sponsorship on TikTok.
