Piggly Wiggly was founded by Clarence Saunders in 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee. It was the first true self-service grocery store.
Piggly Wiggly Corporation secured the self-service format and issued franchises to hundreds of grocery retailers for the operation of its stores. In this self-service format, customers entered the store through a turnstile and chose merchandise while walking through the store’s 4 aisles of products.
At the company’s peak in 1932, Piggly Wiggly operated 2,660 stores with annual sales of $180 million.
Saunders lost control of Piggly Wiggly in 1922 after he lost most of his assets in a bad stock deal. The company was then divided into strategic units and sold to regional grocery chains.
The now-smaller Piggly Wiggly Corporation continued to prosper as a franchiser for hundreds of independently-owned grocery stores that are licensed to do business under the Piggly Wiggly name.
Today Piggly Wiggly has more than 600 independently-owned Piggly Wiggly stores in 17 states.

My mom who uses a a walker and wheel chair went shopping in piggly wiggly in Forestdal Al on Monday March 14th. She had a good shopping experience until an employee who is her estranged grand daughter Jamesha Smith Moore ran outside cussin her out. Calling her b’s and other cuss words. Also telling her she don’t care if she loses her job. My mom refrained from talking to her over 4 years ago because she sent her harassing texts messages cussing her that she still has today. One of the workers from piggly wiggly and customers witnessed her doing this and told her to stop. I spoke to the store manager jason and wasn’t satisfied. He tells me that they need to stay away from one another. Of course my mom and I both do that. Also, when my mom initially arrive she sat in the parking lot looking for a money order receipt and was approached by Mrs. Moore, tapping on my mom’s car window. That was the start of her intimidation. After her loud display outside of the store, my mom was upset and shaken up. She was trying to intimidate and harass my 80 year old mom from coming back to spend money at Piggly Wiggly in Forestdale Al. That is NO WAY to treat a customer or your grandmother. Obviously she went back to lie to the store manager Jason. He’s telling my mom and I that she said something to Mrs. Moore in the store which upset her and made her run out side in front of other customers to cuss at my mother. My mom was “appalled” by that when she heard him say that on the speaker phone. He said he saw the exchange on camera when it happened in the store, then when i questioned him about it he changed his statement and said he saw them exchange words outside of the store. I would like a higher up to view the same footage bc I feel he’s being inaccurate. That’s not the only thing he said that caused me not to have faith in how he “tried” to handle this situation. Then when i spoke on how unprofessional that was for her to come outside to do that, he then tells me she was on break. Im like WHAT???!
Im fearful of what she could possibly do next if she did this much the last time. That’s embolden bad behavior on piggly wiggly part. I hope the corporate office handles this and I will be in contact with someone.

The store in Scott, LA is a total joke. the store manager is rude and condesceinding-when i called to discuss my complaint he could have cared less and when asked for his boss contact number he said they cant give that number out and hung up. WIth so many grocery stores to choose from I ask myself now why would I go to such a back woods store to begin with….I never will again..love love walmart…they are the best. And, what he didnt realize is that I knew that wasnt true and would ensure that my complaing reaches the CEO. the staff in this store just sit around and talk and when customers ask for help they run hide

I was bombarded by rudeness and hostility at the Parkersburg West Virginia Southside store location by the store manager over me spraying body sprays in the air to test their smell to see which one I wanted to buy have since took a picture of her posted it I put my groceries back proceeded to walk out and said I’d never be back and I promise I never will
BJ says
Are you kidding me! You cannot try out products to see which one you like, unless there are samples set out. It’s comparable to opening five different jars of pickles, tasting one from each jar and returning the jars to the shelves. I’m surprised that she didn’t make you pay for each body spray that you used. Also, any customer with allergies does not want you spraying different scents into the air that they might need to walk through. The manager was probably extremely grateful when you promised that you would never return. You owe the store manager a huge apology.

I feel I must report this” event” that happened to my friend and I today at the Piggly Wiggly in Grantsboro, North Carolina today Friday May 15, 2020. We stopped in to purchase some toilet paper. We are both retired and didn’t need much, just a small package. We chose the Charmin six pack because it seemed the best price. The shelf stated it was $3.99. When we got to the register it rang up $14 and some cents! I was mostly upset, as my friend was also, because of the shelf being one price and at the register another! I realize this pandemic is causing quite a lot of concerns, but we felt if this item was a different price, and quite a different price than what the shelf said, then how does the shopper know what they will be spending! The right price should be shown on the shelf! Thank you for reading this, I pray, and hopefully someone else won’t have to experience this!
Debbie N Rose says
Did you have on your reading glasses and check the bar codes from what the item between the shelf and the item you purchased? Anyone can move items on the shelves. Right now you are lucky to find toilet paper at all. I live in Darlington SC and finding toilet paper in stock at stores isn’t easy. It took me days to find toilet paper in stock.

I am writing you about the store in Cuthbert ga. On several occasions I have purchased 10 bag of chicken and only to get home and find it rotten. I have talked to people in the meat section and was told once the management was advised but the comment was well if they bring it back fine if not fine to. Nothing done to change this and they order the same product

I live in Antioch Il. Many of us shop at Piggly Wiggly as we are are disabled,in scooters or walkers and it is close to our homes. The employees are kind and courteous, our problem is the quality of produce and meat! I have seen employees taking rotten, moldy grape tomatoes out of cartons but customers being charged same amount of money as if it was a full carton! I have asked to speak to produce manager or when they would be in,but they never know! Same thing in the meat department! Brown meat, expired meat! I am speaking for the elderly who are worse off than I am. They don’t have have a choice to go to another store, please help all of us who count on Piggly Wiggly to sell us the quality products we deserve!

You need to do somerhing about your gas operation in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Often the points are not accepted at the gas station so the gas station says it is a problem of the store and the store in Lake Geneva says it is a gas station problem so as the customer I am very inconvenienced and was given a new card which STILL not had the points transferred. Walmart is in the area and is taking lots of the business and they will have mine soo unless you people get your act together. Thank You.

Dear Sir/Madame:
We are manufacturers of a classic non-carbonated blackberry drink previously known as “White’s Blackberry Drink” now called ” Lowcountry Nectar” . We have sold to the Piggly Wigglys in Beaufort, Charleston, Monks Corner and around the southeast in the late 70’s early 80’s. It was a very successful but small family business and the partners became to mature to keep up with the rigors of production and distribution. A descendent of the White family and I have partnered to rebranded the drink, produce it and distribute it. We would like the opportunity to discuss with you the prospect of re-introducing this product and distribute it through your stores. The drink was popularly known as “Christmas wine” (because of it only being produced during the holiday season). It was also routinely used by churches as communion wine, . Because of persistent demands, we are proceeding with year round production and looking for an opportunity to partner with Piggly Wiggly. The public longs for the unique flavor that invokes a nostalgic feeling of childhood and simpler times in life. Please allow us to meet with you to discuss this product and have you to taste a sample and decide for yourself if this indeed is a great product. I try to avoid big box stores, I like to spend my dollar locally as much as possible. Our local Piggly Wiggly (Ashville, Al.) is normally good. However I have to say recently the environment is less than pleasant. A recent cold snap has sent below normal temperatures to the south and our store is freezing. The employees are wearing layers of clothing, hats and gloves trying to do their job. The customers are complaining and one can’t “shop” it is so uncomfortable. You have to get in get what you need and get out. It is pathetic to make people work in this environment and it can only hurt sales when your customers are so uncomfortable they cant “shop” and your employees are so cold they cant work. I realize this may sound petty to some yet I am not exagerating. I also realize you can’t keep a store excessively warm with doors opening and closing., the cost to keep perishables cold etc. I am accustomed to walking the dairy isle for example and feeling cold air This goes beyond cool and it is throughout the store not just up front. One bright side is I understand the management’s office is warm. Hmm.
Could you pleae contact the owner and ask him to “turn the heat on”?

Hi, “Corporate Piggly Wiggly”
I am COMPLETELY DUMBFOUNDED as to WHY there is a place for complaints and comments to submit, here. WHERE are the REPLIES and THE APOLOGIES??????
IT IS AN ABSOLUTE SHAME THAT SINCE 1916 PIGGLLY WIGGLY HAS BEEN A HOUSEHOLD NAME AND “COOPERATE” JUST LETS STORES RUN THE NAME INTO THE GROUND. IT’S SO EASY TO SIT BACK AND LET THE STORES RUIN THEMSELVES, IT’S EASIER TO JUST NOT CARE, ISN’T IT. EVEN IN THE MOST DISGUSTING COMPLAINTS, THERE IS NO APOLOGY. WHERE IS THE DECENCY????
Belinda Carmichael says
My complaint is Nov.18, 2017 I bought groceries at the Forestdale store in Birmingham, Al. I used their sale paper I received in the mail that advertised a dozen eggs for one cent with a $10.00 purchase I spent about $26.00 from their sale paper. When I was leaving the line I asked the cashier did she make sure she only charged me one cent for my eggs she said No I paid full price because I didn’t have a coupon. When I got home I called the manager asked him about it he said the coupons were mailed out I told him I didn’t get one he said I had to be on a mailing list that they had fixed up 2months ago. I hadn’t been in the Piggly Wiggly 2months ago so I told him he was losing a customer cause he wouldn’t make me satisfied over a dozen eggs that were advertised for one cent and he didn’t care, Jeff the manager. I’m calling corporate. Its not the money its the principle of it all. Needless to say I won’t shop their again. The store stinks from the dairy on through the meat, its just dirty and the employees are rude.

Hello, I am a long time shopper of Piggly Wiggly on 13th ST. Columbus, GA.
I just recently was hired on at this store as a Part Time employee, everything that I was to do as a clerk was discussed when Tim Huntington interviewed me. But since I have gone to work I have only done what was discussed one day after that I have not been given hardly any hours at all 7 to 15 per week . I also had a health problem that I gave a Doctor note to Fred at this store and I was supposed to have gone to a new hire meeting last thursday the 3rd but my note said not to return to work til the 5th . I am in a bad financial place right now and was looking forward to at least 20hrs per week but Tim does not seem to have a grasp on how to follow hiring procedures, they did not even get me in the system until the day before the pay period ended. The lack of communication has caused so much anxiety and worry that I can not even bring myself to shop there anymore, and I may have lost my job because of the confusion between Managers at this store. I can stock and do all types of clerk jobs in the store with great detail, but I was asked to train for the Registers even though it was discussed thuroughly that I would not be any help on a register and that if hired I would not except register work. Well he does not seem to remember any of that but at least I took the time to discuss it with Fred one of the other Managers so he remembers. Also the back room where the produce is and the colas and cleaning equipment is discusting there are flyes everywhere alive and piles of dead ones and the floor scrubber leaks battery acid on the floor and where it is kept is in a bad spot , almost blocking a emergency exit. There just seems to not be very much organization at this store . So whether I am fired or not at this point I thought you should know why the turn over rate with staff is so high. Thanks and best Regards to you, Jeffrey Briggs

I recently visited the local Piggly wiggly in Charleston Tn. I was standing at deli counter trying to decide what I wanted when one of the mgrs (Mary) came over and began to chastise one of the employees that was putting out fresh potato salad, telling him that they (deli personnel) had to answer the phone when it rings because she was too busy upfront. I stood there in disgust at her rude attitude. Continued through the store but just could not make any purchases for thinking about how rude the mgr was, she could have pulled this employee to the side(at least out of ear shot of customers) before she began her rant. Mgrs like her not only run customers off but good employees. I have been on both sides of this situation and what she did is unexcusable and unacceptable. She has no Management skills or people skills at all. I then pushed my empty buggy back to the front to leave and there stood manager Mary talking and laughing with other employees. Next time I need something I will drive the extra miles to go to another store. I don’t care if she was the owner or just a manager she was out of line and should be disciplined for her actions.

This is what i put on my facebook account:
I had a similar problem today with the Piggly Wiggly on Broad Street in Sumter, SC. Waited 10 minutes before someone in the Deli helped me…I ordered 2 cheeseburger baskets and told them I would be back after I picked up a couple of other things. When I got back my order was not ready…and I observed the guy fixing my order pick up the phone with his gloved hand getting the germs from the phone all over his glove then onto my food. He then brought ONE cheeseburger basket. I told him I ordered 2 and he said I only ordered one. I said forget it I’ll go somewhere else…left the cheeseburger and my baskart of groceries there and walked out.

Huge tourist attraction….your store is the only store in this town and it’s ugly, it’s run down, the food is out of date, the meat doesn’t even look edible. Your store could be great , but someone needs to come here and make it great ! So sad that the people that work there are clueless, rude, and just don’t even care. I have seen this store 15 years ago (and it wasn’t very good then) now it is even worse. Can you plz help this store? We need it to be great!

My husband and I were shopping in the SAVANNAH, TENNESSEE – Piggy Wiggly and buying meat like we usually do. We took a roast that looked like it was real nice and ask the butcher to grind it for us. I don’t know what his name is but he is an elderly man and wears a hood on his head? He said he would for a dollar more a pound but otherwise he said to buy ground beef that was already ground that was on display. We told him forget it because we had never been told that at any store before. We went ahead and was proceeding to do our shopping elsewhere in the store, when we were approached by another meat person who said he overheard our conversation and he would grind it for us. Apparently he waited until the elderly meat man go on break and then approach up with that offer. We immediately said that yes, thank you. We try to stay clear of that one man from the meat dept. He thinks he is the boss and is very mean. I have heard stories that no one wants to work with him. Why do they hire people without good customer service to work for them? I guess they have a hard time to get someone to work for the wages that they offer?? (sure enough, on our way out, we saw that older meat man out having a cigarette on break) He might have been in a hurry for break and didn’t want to wait on us and thought the dollar more a pound would deter us from buying. How rude!!!

I am a loyal customer of the Pig and I frequent the store on a weekly basis. I went in the store this morning to make a purchase and redeem my stamps. I had four completed cards and one that was lacking 3 stamps(the purchase I made covered that and more) I asked the cashier could I redeem the card even though it was lacking 3 WHOLE stamps. Without hesitation she said NO. I told her that I thought that was bad customer service. Those cards require a large amount of purchases to fill them up so with that said You already know I have spent quit a bit of money with the store. I felt very cheated as a customer that has shopped with the Pig for 25 years plus. 3 stamps just cost you a customer and Food Depot here I come.

I was treated terribly at the store in the Birmingham lake view area. Manager would not give me corporate number nor his name. Had me removed because I took a picture of the price of the cigarette and told him it was wrong. After I questioned the price he was very rude, then asked for my id, I’m 43, he caused a huge scene… I’m completely and utterly disgusted… All I know is he is mr Lopez… I’m outraged honestly.. He is charging the wrong prices.. And I have a picture to prove it. I want a personal apology from him in front of all the employees he acted ridiculous about. Sign said $5.39 and pack had a $1 off. I have also left a voicemail and am looking forward to resolving this and him being disciplined…

Just had my first shopping experience at Piggly Wiggly in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. I had gotten my pig ? card weeks earlier. In which I had to show photo ID.
As the the cashier totaled the order, I proceeded to write out a personal check. She told me that they don’t accept out of state checks. The institution I deal with has a bank right across the street. Bank of America ever heard of it? All the other supermarkets and retail stores have no problem with out of state checks. Being a Snowbird, I personally pass this information on my social media pages. In retrospect if each store is individually owned and operated but not directly under corporate direction. I would like to make a suggestion that the stores all follow guidelines on cleanliness and food handling as dictated by federal law.

Last night my son and I went to Piggly Wiggly in Sussex Wi. as we were finishing our shopping he says ‘Mom’ I will meet you at the check out I have to use the bathroom’ I replied with ‘okay honey meet you up front.’ I proceeded to the checkout. There was 3 lights on but only 2 cashiers, as I patiently waited for the lady ahead of me to finish her order the cashier looked at me then said said ‘Sam…’ as I watched her look at a girl who obviously is supposed to be manning the empty register. “Sam” continued on with her conversation with another co-worker. The cashier waited a few seconds and again a little louder this time says ‘SAM!…’ Sam then looks at her who then looks at me. “Sam rolls her eye and saunters over to her register. The nice cashier says to me ‘Mam Sam can help you right there.’ Thank you very much I reply. I walk over to the next register, start putting my things on the conveyer. NEVER did Sam say Good evening, How are you?, did you find everything you were looking for? NOTHING. Instead she just looked, more like glared at me as if I were interrupting her conversation. I finished my checkout thanked the bagger for bagging my groceries, walked to my car. Still wondering where my son is wondering if maybe he fell in? I get to my car start to put my bags in the trunk I go to lift a bag, to find the bagger has placed all 10 of the powerades in ONE plastic bag!! And the 2 bottles of juice (juicey-juice) not in a bag at all.. I’m guessing there was invisible handles on both juices that you need special forces to see. I am now starting to feel a little more irritated. I finally see my son coming out of the store. But he is hopping on one foot. ( did I mention we live in WI and it was 3 Degrees out side?) As I start walking towards him thinking he is hurt I say ‘SON, What the hell are doing?’ He is holding his shoe in his hand with a mortified look on his face he hands me his shoe and says ‘MOM, someone POOPED on the floor in the bathroom!!’ I take his shoe look at it sure enough he had stepped in someones XXXXX! now I am LIVID. I walk back into the store with my sons shoe go to the service desk and tell the lady what just happened she replies with let me get you a manager. 1 min later this young Boy walks up to me and says may I help you? I show him my sons shoe explain he was in the bathroom this BOY looks at me and says Oh… Then turns and walks away!!! ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME???
I then say EXCUSE me I’m not done! your bagger over there decided it would be Great customer service to place all 10 of my powerades in one bag this is un-acceptable! This Child(yes I am referring to the so called manager) now shrugs his shoulders and high tails it across the store!!
My question for you Corporate office. Is this how do you train your managers? what happened to customer service?? An apology would have been nice maybe a we will get that cleaned up right away…
I got home and after thinking about it for a while. My son could have Very well walked though the entire store with XXXXX on his shoe and contaminate the whole store! But I have raised him better then that he knows what kind of diseases come out of people like for example C-DIFF is airborne one whiff of that and someone is going to be one hurting unit.
Absolutely Ridicules! I Believe in shopping at hometown stores keeping the little guy in business but if this is the way I am going to be treated I will take my business elsewhere. And let me tell you that is quite a few dollars out of YOUR pocket considering I have 1 teenage and 1 preteen boy Lord knows how much they eat!!

Yesterday, my girlfriend and I entered our neighborhood Piggly Wiggly. We purchased a few items for dinner, and proceeded to check out. My girlfriend (29 years old) is pregnant and stated she was tired from work and wanted to go sit in the car. As I finished my purchase, the store manager (BARB) explains she needed me to go get my girlfriend’s ID. I Responded thay my girlfriend just got off work, and doesn’t actually have a drivers license, nor drive.
I then drove us home, and retrieved my girlfriends ID so that I could go back to the store and make a legal purchase. Once we returned with BOTH I.ds The store manager (BARB) completely embarrasses us by calling the clerk to verify we had our I.D.s
I have NEVER been treated like this before, and I can’t believe you have managers enforce such policies. I was told by an employee that I should have “left my girlfriend in the car.” I was employed as security guard for 8+ years, dealing with the Wisconsin statute involving ID compliance. I can tell you professionally, even when dealing with deceptive minors, I still was compelled to use common sense when enforcing the law.
Your policy caused a huge inconvenience , As one your patrons. The manager only added insult to injury by questioning my integrity.

I was a recent employee of Piggly Wiggly in Beaver Dam, WI. I worked a little over a year and was recently let go. I had never been written up or even had an employee review. The owner Brenda came to the Bakery where I was working and let me go. She was rude, unprofessional and did not give me a chance to say anything. She said we had an issue and said we were done and told me I needed to leave now. She did it in front of all the other employees and treated me disrespectfully. Her and her husband are the worst owners I have ever worked for. They have fired 3 full time employees from the bakery within 3 months all of whom made over $10.00 an hour and replaces them for minimum wage employees. I don’t know if they have to follow any corporate rules? If not they should. Brenda also tries to play the HR person also and she is horrible at it. She doesn’t give you any information on benefits and when you ask her, she acts like you are bothering her and you have to repeatedly ask her for the info. Even then she screws it up. They are going to ruin the name of Piggly Wiggly by the way they run their store and treat their employees.

Re: PW #508 located 119 E.Church St., Columbia, AL
I’m an African American female passing through Columbia and stopped to pick up a few items, I wasnt in the store 2 min when a manager made the comment to me “we don’t have it”, I ignored his comments as some sorry attempt at humor but as moved to another isle, he repeated the comment. If your policy is to serve whites only, you should post it in the window and I’ll gladly oblige. Trust that I won’t shop there again but I will post a sign in the public parking lot and on face book, Twitter and all social media that this store is for “Whites Only”
This happened two hours ago.

The piggly wiggly in Escatawpa Ms
I was in piggly wiggly last Sunday afternoon to get lunch.
There was a lady in front of me waiting on an order for a pan of chicken.
When they got her order up front the boy dropped a piece of chicken on the counter
Then put it back in the pan. The lady said I ordered dark meat and that’s mixed and the boy dropped a piece and put it back in the pan. He took the piece out and put another piece in the pan. The cook said if you will take it I will pay the difference and he did. The whole time this was going on there was a girl standing there that could have been waiting on other customers but she didn’t. When the guy finally got through he started to wait me. I told him what I wanted and he started to fix it and someone else that works there walked up and started talking to him so he stops to talk to them. I was going to buy two dinners but got so frustrated when I finally got the one I took it and left. No one in the deli was wearing gloves or hair nets. I called back and talked to a manager named Johnny . I told him what had happened and about them not wearing hand or hair coverage. He tried to give me a free dinner. I told him I wasn’t after anything free . I wanted him to know what was going on in their deli. He said he would take care of it. I was back in piggly wiggly today shopping and looked over at the deli and nothing has changed. I use to never shop at piggly wiggly and I think I will do my shopping elsewhere from now on.

I live near two different piggly wiggly stores Juneau WI / Beaver Dam WI and one has spoiled meats and rude staff members and the other does not honor any shown prices with very rude owners and workers. I am disgusted with both of them ! Even though they are individually owned, I think they should be heald to some kind of standards. I have contacted both of the stores and neither seem to care. No one has contacted me or tried to make amends. I am not going to either store again unless something is done.

To Whom it may Concern, I am writing to find out if the Corporate office has any responsibility for the filthy conditions for a independently owned store that uses the Piggly Wiggly name? I needed a job and was so thrilled to go to work for Piggly Wiggly in the town of Nekoosa Wi. My first night I walked into the Deli/Bakery department I was mortified to see the unclean conditions of the kitchen area where food is prepared! There was not one clean area to work in. When I walked up to the hand cleaning sink that to was filthy! the Bakery Manager then walked me to the produce cooler where open food is stored the smell in that cooler made me gage! And all my donuts where stored in there on dirty trays with a dirty bag over the top of the tray cart witch was also filthy. That was my first 10 min. I worked my shift , at the end of my shift I was told to watch the Manager clean the floor area in the Kitchen I again was mortified at what I seen! He filled a bucket with Tide laundry soap instead of a disinfectant cleaner grabbed a dirty mop and just put the water on the floor he never swept the floor nor did he go under anything or move anything out of the way, he then took a brush on a stick and pushed the water around the floor only scrubbing varying areas again I clean my kitchen better at home! I returned to do my shift the next night and told my Manager about all my concerns about the filthy conditions among other things that I felt were not right with food handling I was told ( this is how we do it). When my shift ended on my second night I told him this was not a good fit for me and I didn’t want to waste any more of my time or his and thanked him for the job opportunity, but I would not be returning to work in those conditions. I just feel it is my morale responsibility to my community to let the Corporate office know of these conditions being the Piggly Wiggly name is involved here.

Just want to say a clerk by the name of Amy,(I don’t know her last name) who works at Piggly wiggly in Algoma Wisconsin, is the nicest clerk I have ever come across, she goes above & beyond her job to help the customer in any way she can.
She certainly brightens my day every time I shop there.
I just want to give credit where credit is due.
thank You

I see that your Piggly Wiggly Stores are independently owned and operated but I did not know if your corporate office might benefit for your various stores with LED Lighting. LED light bulbs and tubes are the future in lighting and right now also you can get rebates from most major utility companies that offset upfront costs. I am working with my sister on providing LED Lighting. Her company DwellSmart is also located in Charleston, SC and we would be happy to provide estimates for any of your stores for LED Lighting. LED has many benefits, some of which are said on my website, including lasting longer and saving substantially on watts used saving money on Utility bills + they work great in coolers too. Please contact us if there is any interest for you or any of your stores, thank you. John
