At 28 years of age, Joanna Griffiths quit her job and decided she was going to run her own company.

One area that spoke to her was the need that everyday women had for panties that were more than just pretty or sexy. Women needed panties that actually worked for their problems. At the time, Depends, which are adult diapers, were the only option women had.

Knix Wear was born from this idea in 2013. Griffiths can now claim more than $2 million in annual revenue and three very successful crowdsource funding events, but even then, Griffiths will tell you that it wasn’t easy.

History

Knix is an all-female operated company that designs and creates underwear and bras for women of all sizes, all ages, and for certain needs. This “made by women for women” business plan has worked well for Griffiths.

Knix is sold at a few Canadian retailers and Griffiths hopes this will also be true in the USA, but items can always be purchased online.

Panties that have sanitary pads built into them and are washable have been a bit hit at Knix, with women clamoring for more of these enviro-friendly solutions.

The company raised $5.7 million in funding in November 2019.

History

In December 2019, Ladder Life Insurance launched in New York state via a relationship with Allianz Life Insurance Company of New York.

SoFi, a refinancing company for student debt, teamed up with Ladder in May 2020 to provide free wills and estate planning for clients.

Fidelity Life Insurance is the parent company of Ladder.

Ladder Life Insurance maintains headquarters in Menlo Park, California.

In September 2011, businessman Bradley Jacobs acquired Express-1 Expedited Solutions. He renamed the company XPO Logistics.

XPO Logistics is an American multinational transportation and contract logistics company that manages supply chains for 50,000 customers, including 69 of the Fortune 100.

XPO has acquired 17 shipping companies between 2012 and 2015. The company performs freight brokerage, last-mile trucking, less than a truckload shipping, and global freight.

History

The company spends more than $500 million on software improvements and upgrades. It retains more than 100 data scientists working on automation processes and AI.

In October 2019, the company was the first logistics operation to join MIT’s Industrial Liaison Program, a partnership organization that pairs MIT resources with corporations worldwide to solve global business challenges.

In June 2020, General Motors recognized XPO Logistics as the Supplier of the Year for Managed Transportation.

In July 2020, the company released a pandemic safety white paper for the essential support of essential workers.

When camping as a boy, Jeremy Lang was taught by his father to always leave the campsite and surrounding area cleaner than when you found it. This was a courtesy to the next camper, but also a show of respect to nature and the planet.

It only made sense that when Lang decided to create cases and covers for cell phones and other electronics, that he would find a sustainable and eco-friendly way to do so.

Lang discovered that a type of bioplastic could be made from plant based biopolymers. Most are biodegradable and even compostable!

History

The company creates cell phone and tablet cases and covers that use a flax straw fiber base, which is called Flaxstix. This is a biodegradable, sustainable product. Most Flax straw is burned by farmers since it has no “value.”

In mid-2020, the company began offering eco-friendly, biodegradable Apple watch bands.

In an effort to revitalize fantasy sports, Henry Leung, Ken Wang, Nan Wang, and Weixi Yen developed an app called Sleeper in 2018.

The Sleeper app is free from advertising and features a social media platform for chatting with other users.

In 2019, the company surpassed 1 million users and added fantasy basketball sports that same year. Using its Series B investment, Sleeper has launched a season-long fantasy League of Legends game for professional LoL circuits in North America, Europe, Brazil, Korea, and Vietnam.

Co-founder and CEO Nan Wang says that the company is negotiating with NASCAR and Penn National regarding creating a fantasy auto racing series.

Sleeper believes it can overcome the competition from ESPN and Yahoo by including women and be able to attract casual fans.
