Old Dominion Freight Line was founded by Earl and Lillian Congdon when they started running a single truck between Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia.
The company first expanded to North Carolina and South Virginia. When the trucking industry was deregulated in the 1980’s Old Dominion Freight Line expanded into Florida, Tennessee, and California, as well as Chicago and Dallas.
Today the company operates a fleet of 25,000 trailers and 6,200 tractors from 220 service centers all over the United States. Less-than-truckload (LTL), which is freight from different shippers in one truckload, accounts for most of the company’s business. Old Dominion also offers logistics services including supply chain consulting and warehousing.
Old Dominion Freight Line trades publicly on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol ODFL, is a member of the S&P 400, is #876 in the Fortune 1000, has 24,271 employees, and had $4.015 million in revenue in 2020.
In February 2023, The Motley Fool stated that a bull market was on the way and that buying stock in Old Dominion would be a prudent move.

I am currently an dockworker at the Rialto location, I was hired on as part time and the first day reporting me and the other people I was hired on with were told we were instead being promoted to full time status immediately, i just hit my 90 days and was looking forward to getting my full benefits, medical, dental, etc, instead i found out that a mistake was made and was never mad full time, an error was made when converting me and the others, i only found out because we all received a holiday bonus, but part timers only received half while full time received the full amount, my location is also in the middle of doing a shift bid company wide, and part timers do not get to participate, i was not on the list, so this further concerned me, after digging and talking to my assistant terminal managers, they were able to find out that a human error had occurred and they did not follow through on the process of converting me to full time properly, so now my 90 days just started, 90 days already into my employment, i do not get my back pay because i was suppose to get a raise, and holidays i worked do not get paid, also i do not get to participate in the shift bid because i had no seniority now, and all my assistant terminal managers and HR can say is, “theres nothing that can be done, it is what it is unfortunaly”, so I’m out of luck because there was an error made, not on my part, but that of HR.

I am a current employee of old domonion freight line inc. I have had over 30 + years of driving with awards givin to me. Any back in December I had a serious accident tractor trailer rollover putting me out of work for nearly 3 months and almost iniatialy almost dying from this there safety committee claimed it was preventable and I’m supposed to be terminated I’m still waiting to hear back from my appeal letter. It was clearly not preventable due to the fact that I had driven 270 miles without any indication of icy roads doing the regular thing a driver would always do. Checking mirrors for road spray from the tires and checking the backside of your mirrors for ice and the windshield anyway I wound up hitting ice on the road losing complete control and going off a embankment rolling over with 2 loaded trailers and no trolley brake to even try to regain control . There was also another tractor trailer facing the wrong direction in the same area.several accidents that morning . It was not a preventable accident at all being on ice and pulling 2 loaded trailers I feel like a termination is absolutely wrong.
