The Los Angeles Zoo was founded in 1912, initially as the Griffith Park Zoo. The original zoo site is still there, although it is not much more than remnants now, after being closed in 1966. The Los Angeles Zoo opened the same year, about 2 miles from the old zoo.
The zoo is located on 133 acres of land. The city of Los Angeles owns the entire zoo. A botanical garden was introduced in 2001. The zoo is perhaps best known for its successful California Condor program, which started with 22 condors, and today has more than 430. There are 7 attractions in the zoo, including the Red Ape Rain Forest, Campo Gorilla Reserve, and Elephants of Asia.
During the teacher’s strike in March 2023, the zoo allowed students to visit the zoo at no charge.
The Los Angeles Zoo has also had quite a few escape artists over the years, including Evelyn the gorilla, who escaped from her enclosure 5 times, and Virginia the wolf, who escaped and lived for several months in nearby Griffith Park.

A great disappointment. Came here to see a zoo that no longer is. A great waste of money. Why aren’t you warned at the door before purchasing the tickets. That most of the zoo is empty. You pay to walk around seriously. It’s not fair for people’s wallets and the children that are disappointed. I would like a refund if not half
