Kemper Corporation was founded as Unitrin, Inc. in 1990 when it was spun-off from Henry Singleton’s Teledyne. Unitrin had offered life and health insurance, property and casualty insurance, and consumer finance.

In the mid-1990’s the company survived a hostile takeover attempt by American General Corp. The company was targeted for its soaring revenues and stock price.

In 2011 Unitrin took the name Kemper Corporation.

Medical Mutual of Ohio has its roots in the formation in Cleveland Hospital Service Association (CHSA) in 1934, CHSA was a precursor to the Blue Cross Association.

Medical Mutual of Cleveland was formed in 1956 and merged with Akron Hospital Service to form Blue Cross Plans, which became affiliated with the Blue Shield system in 1961.
