Hugo’s Family Marketplace was founded in 1939 in downtown Grand Forks, North Dakota. The company’s original name was Pure Foods Market, but was later changed to Hugo’s, after its founder Hugo Magnuson, who later became Mayor of Grand Forks.
Today, the company operates a small chain of 12 supermarkets in the states of Minnesota and North Dakota. The company recently opened 5 Hugo’s Wine and Spirit stores around the Grand Forks area. Hugo passed away in 2003, just a few days short of his 103rd birthday. He worked at the store the weekend before he passed.
The company is still owned and operated by the Magnuson family. The current CEO is granddaughter Kristie Magnuson Nelson.
In November 2022, Hugo’s acquired local grocery Palubicki’s Family Market for an undisclosed amount.
Both Palubicki’s markets will be rebranded to Hugo’s Family Markets but nothing else will change, according to a spokesperson for Hugo’s.
Hugo’s Family Marketplace has plans on expanding into other states, but details have yet to be released. Headquarters are located on Washington Street, in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Worst experience I’ve ever shopping anywhere at Hugo’s in East Grand Forks Minnesota. Manager was extremely rude, and intimidating. I will never be going there again Hugo’s just lost $500 per month that I spend there. Manager followed me outside to my car and tried to take something out of my cart while my baby was in it. I asked him to wait until I got my baby out he kept insisting. I told him it was hot out and I needed to get my baby in my car he kept trying to talk to me. I walked out without my groceries because of how uncomfortable he made me. Then to be followed into the parking lot was just unacceptable.

I moved to Grafton ND almost three years ago, in our town there is only one grocery store . Hugo’s supermarket. I cannot believe how many times the store sends out the store flier listing items on sale and you drive to the store only to find out they don’t have the item. Happens ALL the time.. This week in particular easter candy. Driven there 3 times yet hoping that it came in. Nope!. One time we asked for a rain check and we were told by one of the employees we don’t give out raincheck.
I’m so disappointed with this store.

I would also put a complaint about Richard at the Jamestown store..as a customer I found him to be very rude and disrespectful..treats employees terrible..as does head person from corporate..she has been very threatening to employees..I thought this store was better than that..its getting a bad reputation..they should not be threatening good employees that they would be fired..sad situation…work with people..don’t threaten and be rude and disrespectful..also there been alot of sexual harassment.

Why is Gain laundry detergent in the ad and when I went to 2 stores today there was none. The one store told me they do not stock it. I did get a rain check with the hopes of them getting it in at some time

I just had an interview with Richard, who is currently the store manager of Hugo’s Market in Jamestown, ND. I can’t believe Hugos Family Marketplace would have people like him who does not have work ethic and respect to others. He was rude, disrespectful, and arrogant. He didn’t greet me, he left me behind to take me to the second floor and when I finally got to the conference room to be interviewed, he aggressively pushed the chair towards me. Then, he started to put a bunch of excuses to not hire me. This lady named Jerri, who interviewed me a day before wanted to hire me for the position. She was so nice to me and respecful that she even said that she would love to have me on the team. Hopefully, this comment will go to the corporate manager of Hugo’s Marketplace. Richard shouldn’t be at front of a business where customer service is main priority.

On Friday afternoon, April 6, 2018, at Hugo’s in Grafton, I bought two loaves of the rustic multi-grain bread featured in that week’s ad for $1.99 each. That
hint of molasses takes me back to growing up around six Norwegian aunt’s. It is just like Auntie Ruth (Gunderson) Bakke’s bread which I thought I’d never see again.
I gave one loaf to my neighbor who was waiting in the parking lot while I shopped. By the way, the two older gentlemen were very nice. One was checking, the other was bagging, late in the afternoon, April 6, 2018 in Grafton.
The store was clean and fresh. The fruit and veg. dept. looked great. The whole store did.
Sincerely,
Elaine Smith
