Save Mart Supermarkets Corporate Office

Save Mart was founded in 1952 by Mike Piccinini and Nick Tocco.

The company began to expand in 1960 when it opened 10 new stores across California.

In 1981 Bob Piccinini, son of founder Mike Piccinini and nephew to founder Nick Tocco, was named president. During the next decade he bought out his family members, became CEO, and began a period of expansion.

In 1989 Save Mart acquired 27 Fry’s Supermarkets in San Francisco’s Bay Area.

In 1997 the company acquired 10 Lucky stores, also in California.

In 2003 Save Mart acquired 25 Food 4 Less stores and rebranded them FoodMaxx.

Today Save Mart Supermarkets owns and operates 225 supermarkets under the names Save Mart, S-Mart Foods, Lucky, and FoodMaxx located in California and Nevada. The company has many store brands that it sells in its supermarkets, including Sunny Select, Sunnyside Farms, Top Care, and Valu Time, among others.

Save Mart Supermarkets has 20,000 employees and had $4.6 billion in revenue in 2012.

RaceTrac Petroleum Corporate Office

Carl Bolch, Sr. founded RaceTrac Petroleum in 1934 in St Louis, Missouri. His first store operated under the name Carl Bolch Trackside Stations.

In 1959 Bolch bought the Oil Well Company, which consisted of several independent gas stations across Alabama.

Carl Bolch’s son, Carl Bolch Jr, joined the company in 1967. He moved the company into high-volume gas stations and pioneered the long self-service island that can serve as many as two dozen cars at the same time.

In 1979 the company relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, and adopted the “RaceTrac” name.

Today RaceTrac refers to company-operated stores and RaceWay for contractor-operated stores. Today RaceTrac Petroleum operates over 600 gas stations and convenience stores in five southeastern states under the RaceTrac and RaceWay names. The company has 6,000 employees and had $9.06 billion in revenue in 2012.

Roundy’s Corporate Office

Roundy’s, Inc. was founded in 1872 by William E. Smith, Judson Roundy and Sidney Hauxhurst in Wisconsin as Smith, Roundy & Co.  Originally, the company was a major warehouse distributor to non-company supermarkets, such as IGA.

In 1922 Roundy’s began to offer its own private Roundy’s brand.

In 1953 the company reorganized as a grocery cooperative.

In 1975 Roundy’s opened its first Pick ‘n Save Warehouse Foods. This was a new concept and the store carried few perishable items, there was no store decor, and the emphasis was on savings. This proved a great success and Roundy’s opened 20 more stores in the following 5 years, eventually reaching 27 stores in 1983.

In 1984 Roundy’s bought Scot Lad Foods, a grocery distributor, and entered the grocery distribution business. By 1994 Roundy’s supplied 1,800 grocery stores.

Throughout the 1990’s and the first decade of the 2000’s, Roundy’s acquired many companies in a concentrated effort to increase its retail business.

Today Roundy’s operates Pick ‘n Save, Rainbow Foods, Copps Food Center, Metro Market, and Mariano’s Fresh Market. Roundy’s went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2012. The company has 20,000 employees and had $3.8 billion in revenue in 2011.

Hy-Vee is an employee-owned supermarket chain of 234 supermarkets located in the Midwestern United States.

Hy-Vee was founded by Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg in Bakersfield, Iowa in 1930. Their first store was a general store. By 1938 when the company was incorporated, Hyde & Vredenburg, Inc. had 15 stores in Iowa and Missouri.

In 1952 an employee contest was held to choose a new name for the company, and Hy-Vee was chosen as the winning entry.

Hy-Vee opened stores in South Dakota in 1975, Nebraska in 1977, Illinois in 1979, and Kansas in 1988.

BJ’s Wholesale Club Corporate Office

BJ’s Wholesale Club was started in 1984 by the retail chain Zayre in Massachusetts. The letters in the name are the initials of the wife, Barbara Jane, and daughter, Beverly Jean, of the first president, Mervyn Weich.

In 1988 Zayre Corporation sold the Zayre nameplate to rival chain Ames, and TJX Companies was formed. In 1989 TJX spun off their warehouse division, including BJ’s, to form Waban, Inc.

In August 1997 Waban, Inc. spun off BJ’s to form an independent company. The new company was named BJ’s Wholesale Club and was headquartered in Westborough, Massachusetts and Waban renamed itself HomeBase, Inc.

In 2011 two private equity firms, Leonard Green & Partners and CVC Capital Partners, acquired BJ’s.

In June 2018, the company went public on the NYSE under the ticker symbol :BJ.

Today BJ’s has 219 stores in 15 states with 25,000 employees. BJ’s had $15.4 billion in revenue in 2020.
