Bassett Furniture was founded in 1902 by the Basset family, David Charles, Samuel, and Reed Bassett in Virginia. The company makes handmade wood furniture and is the oldest furniture maker in the state of Virginia.

The company manufactures and sells a wide variety of furniture, including living room, dining room, and bedroom furniture. The company employs more than 1,300 persons. Bassett Furniture has more than 100 locations in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Expansion continues to be a priority. The company has opened 3 new locations at the beginning of 2017, including Garden City, New Jersey, Los Angeles, California, and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

Bassett reported unaudited consolidated earnings for the first quarter ended February 24, 2018, of $110.3 million for the first quarter of 2018 compared to $105.9 million for the first quarter of 2017, an increase of 4.1%.

In January 2023, Bassett Furniture announced that it was renewing its partnership with Synchrony Bank on a multi-year financing program.

American Signature Furniture Corporate Office

American Signature Furniture Company was founded in 1948 in Columbus, Ohio, by Ephraim.L. Schottenstein. Schottenstein already had a successful clothing store, so he applied the same principles to his furniture store. Beginning by selling furniture out of the basement of his department store, Schottenstein realized that he would need a larger location. The original name of the company was Value City Furniture, the name was changed to American Signature in 2002.

In 1950, Ephraim’s son Jerome begins buying upholstery and bedding manufacturing sites.

In the early 1970’s, Jerome’s son Jay purchases a distribution center which has more than 20,000 square feet of space.

The company is a no longer a subsidiary of Schottenstein stores, although the Schottenstein stores carry the American Signature brand of furniture. Currently, there are 126 furniture locations, mainly in the Midwest, East Coast and Southeastern parts of the US. The company announced the launch of the American Signature Furniture brand in 2003. Value City Furniture stores also carry the American Signature brand.

In 2017, the company announced that it was going to focus on “made to mix” furniture pieces that work well with one another, rather than focus on matching sets of furniture.

American Woodcrafters was founded in High Point, North Carolina, in 2002. The company designs and manufactures furniture.

The company designs and sells household furniture, including bar stools, computer desks, and media centers. They are best known for their children’s and master bedroom furniture designs and sets. Only premium solid hardwoods are used in the furniture process. Some of the company’s most popular models are Hartland Wood, Heirloom Wood, and Cottage Traditions. A recall for bunk beds which were sold exclusively at Haverty’s was issued in 2014 for failing mattress support rails on the upper bunks.

American Woodcrafters was involved in May of 2014 in the collection of canned goods and food items for the needy. In 4 weeks, the company collected over 2,400 cans of food. The company is also known for their “Backpack Drives” to help local school children get the necessary backpacks and school supplies they need.

Baer’s Furniture was founded in South Bend, Indiana, in 1945 by Melvin and Lucile Baer. The company’s original name was Baer’s Home Outfitters. The company operates a chain of furniture and home decor stores.

The Baer’s moved to southern Florida in the late 1960s and took their business with them. Today, Baer’s Furniture has 16 locations in the South Florida area and two warehouses. The company is still family-owned and operated by the Baer family.

Baer’s Furniture offers design help, and financing through Synchrony Bank, and sells brand-name furniture, including Bernhardt, Natuzzi, Tommy Bahama, and Broyhill.

In April 2023, two workers who had fumigated a warehouse for Baer’s Furniture were later found dead. An investigation is ongoing.

Talsma Furniture Corporate Office

Talsma Furniture was founded in 1948 in Hudsonville, Michigan, by Bert Talsman and his father. The pair had worked for other furniture companies when they decided to open their own store.

Today, the company is still run by the Talsma family and it has expanded to 4 locations throughout Michigan. In 2014, the company opened several SnuZz mattress stores. The company sells living room, dining room, bedroom, and home office furniture, as well as mattresses, bedding, and home decor items.

Talsma Furniture sells brand name furniture, such as Cooper Classics, Parker House, Smith Brothers, Rachael Ray Designs, and Broyhill. The company also offers custom made furniture, with fabric or wood of the customer’s choosing. Talsma Furniture currently has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
