Cigna was formed in 1982 by the merger of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG) and the Insurance Company of North America (INA).
INA was the first stock insurance company in America and was founded in 1792. INA is considered to be the ancestor of Cigna. CG was created in 1865 by a special act of the Governor of Connecticut.
In the late 1990’s Cigna had one of the largest international networks in the traditional insurance market. However, the company sold its property and casualty business to ACE Insurance in order to concentrate on its core business.
In 1997 Cigna sold most of its life insurance operations to Lincoln National Corporation.
In 2011 Cigna acquired HeathSpring Inc for $3.8 billion to jump start its business selling medicare plans, growing its numbers from 46,000 to 400,000 Medicare Advantage members.
Today Cigna and its subsidiaries are major providers of medical, dental, disability, life, and accident insurance and related products and services. Cigna operates in 30 countries, has over 35,000 employees, and had $29.119 billion in revenue in 2012.

Professionalism is out the door, call center is in the Philippines. You have to ask for a call center in the USA. Cigna making serious money call center overseas.
I’ve been with Cigna for 13 years as and as an Independent consultant, ( No employer). I added my wife no big deal. She decided to cancel look for something better, wrong decision. Coming back to Cigna was a nightmare. With over 17 calls calling to the Philippine’s and no answers. So frustrated, finally asked for a call center in the United States and was treated with respect and dignity.
Cigna needs to bring jobs back to the United States.

The Company sent me a check then stopped payment on it without any notice. The did not send a letter or call me. I was charged 25.00 for NSF fee plus I could of wrote checks on this place LAF. I am only 58 and was almost kicked out with a thirty day notice and my son had to fax over a 149 pages and I owed 42,000.00 because they cancelled me and my Service Coordinator did not even tell me ans she is a RN with Cigna assign to me. She calls from a block number and because I have my cell phone set up to reject any block calls. So I finally got it paid but no Dr. will see me as long as I have Cigna. I showed up for an appointment with a Medicaid approved Dr. as soon as they saw Cigna they would not see me for Vertigo. I still have vertigo and wheelchair bound and having to deal with this. I am sick of this.

I have been dealing with a claim since November 2017. The provider is out of network, but I should still receive 60% back from Cigna of what I paid out. I have called and spoke to at least 7 representatives during this time. I went to the provider on 10/31/17 and submitted the paperwork for reimbursement. I received a check the following month. I went again to the provider on 11/7/17 and I’m getting the excuse that the diagnosis code is not on the invoice. This invoice is identical to the 10/31/17, which was paid. Rocko from Cigna called the provider and spoke with them. He said I should be receiving a payment soon. I waited 2 weeks then called again and spoke to Vince at Cigna. He said Rocko didn’t provide any detail in the reference number 9945 that I gave him to refer. Vince called provider again and got someone in the office who would have the billing person call back with diagnosis code, He gave me a different reference number 4575. I also asked Vince to have someone call me so I could file a complaint. Never did hear back. I also have a voicemail from the provider stating he spoke to Cigna and gave the information needed. He said I should be receiving my reimbursement too. I have not seen a reimbursement and claim shows pending. I don’t understand why they can’t use the diagnosis code that they used on the 10/31/17 invoice. I had the exact same procedure on 11/7/17. I hope someone in management can help me get this resolved.

Ok, here it is in a condensed form. I became ill in September. I filed a claim with Cigna for short term disability. After exhausting all my monies, on the seventh week, I called, which I was doing every week to see about my claim, So, when I called on the seventh week, a customer service rep, not my claim manager Kimberly, who was always too busy to speak with me and never returned my phone calls, I was told by this person, that I was going to be denied. Denied! And told after seven weeks out! By a rep? Ridiculous and mean. Terrible management with people’s lives! Now, I am 3 months behind in rent, no money for co-pays, so I have;t seen a doc in ages, and no food, cheap unhealthy food, but no real food. I am a broken person and am disgusted with this company. Even Social Security has my illness listed. For shame!

How can a company as big as Cigna, have the most cruel and unusual customer service and get away with? I became ill on September 14th. I filed a claim over the phone, with a customer service rep. All my health history was asked about, not just what had me ill. She said it will take a week or so, over and above the waiting period, and that sounded ok with me. Well, I would call each week to see how my claim was progressing, and I was told, by a customer service rep, not the claim manager, Kimberly, whom supposed to be my claim manager, she ws too busy when I called. Each time I called, I was told the same thing, “I don’t know anything, except that your claim is under review. Well, 7 weeks later, no money for food, rent, doctor appointments, I was told by a customer service rep, that I was denied. Denied? Don’t meet the criteria? Social Security has my illness on their list for God’s sake. Here I am only asking for short term disability, to get through and to get healthy, to return to work eventually. And still, nothing from my claim manager Kimberly. For shame on your practices, when people’s lives are destroyed, as I am. My rent is 3 months behind and my relationship with my landlord is broken. My money???don’t have a dime! A doctor appointment???? no money for the co-pay! I am ill, and no one cares, except my doctors, whom their statements about my health, were taken out of context! And if my other health issues were not in play, why was I asked about them. It was useless info and now you have it.I am broken and a big company like you, Cigna, play with people’s lives! For Shame!

I have degenerative disc disease and need surgery to correct it. I have had chiropractic care, physical therapy, and several doctors who just referred me to other doctors. So I finally found a Dr. who actually cares about his patients which is almost a miracle in itself. Dr. got everything ready and I was cleared medically for surgery by my primary care provider. Drs. did the peer review and concurred surgery was needed. Scheduled for surgery on 5/30 so I make all of my arrangements with time off work and covering my financial costs.Today my Dr. calls and says Cigna denied coverage after they approved all of the tests so I could spend thousands of dollars and waste 10 months to get absolutely no medical help. I believe Cigna would rather I be a raging opioid addict rather than allow me to get help to remain a productive member of society. Feeling more like a violent crime victim than a customer.

Every month, I spend at least an hour on the phone with Cigna and Connect for Colorado to try and get Cigna to correct our billing so that we will not get a termination notice. On August 3, 2017, I spent 1 hour and 22 minutes with a Leadership Billing Team member and a Connect for Colorado representative. We went over the reconcilation spreadsheet that I created and faxed to the Leadership Team line item by line item. We came to an agreement about the amount owed and I paid through the month of October 2017. However, in October, Cigna terminated my insurance and I spent another 56 minutes on the phone with both organizations to review the same information. How can Cigna be so incredibly disorganized? How come I have to spend my time like this almost every month? How can you operate an international company and be this incompetent? I thought Anthem was bad; but I can’t wait until January 1, 2018, so that I never have to deal with Cigna again!!

Need to file a formal complaint against Family Choice Medical Group.
Each time I call them, they give different answers and excuses. They give me different facilities which are contracted with them depending who I speak to. They give me different fax # for STAT. When I request things such as a list of doctors, they can’t pull that info. I call Cigna and Cigna point back to family choice.
Managers at family choice never are available and never answer phone
They suppose to approve scan request within 2-4 hour for STAT but takes days with them
Family choice is VERY UNACCEPTABLE
There are a number of other issues…please contact me

Very frustrated and hope someone higher up that’s NOT customer service sees this!
I have been dealing with this problem for a month.
I made my monthly payment on time May 1st, and also received the e-mail conformation that it was processed. Then I received a call from a customer service rep. that my account was in jeopardy of being cancelled for non payment. So I tell the girl it was paid and when so I checked my bank account while on the phone with her confirming it was taken out of my account on the 3rd. So she says okay no worries, if there is a problem we will call back.
(never got a call back…yeah I do have voice mail) Then my son goes to a new PCP and guess what..no policy. So I call and was like what the heck?! Ma’am you didn’t make your payment…I go through the whole thing again. She who by the way has no business being in customer service, tells me the payment was returned on the 17th….okay I thought you said payment was never received…now it was returned?! So again I check the bank (while on the phone)…no payment was returned. I have to now PROVE I paid so I faxed my bank statement and nothing I have heard nothing! I can’t make the June payment until May is paid for, which it was and I have proof it was. Now I have to pay $1,600. to be reinstated. I have called everyday and they say it takes time…well now I have received a letter that my policy is cancelled! I pay huge premiums and hardly ever use the insurance and this is how you treat your “bread and butter” customers? Now my daughter is sick and needs to see her doctor and I have to pay out of pocket. I expect someone from Cigna to reply.

On 11-9-15 I contacted Cigna to have a copy of my payment made in November e-mailed to me. I talked with a Dayshma who told me that they did not mail out receipts. I told her that Cigna always sends me an e-mail to tell me my payment is due but can’t mail a receipt on the payment. She kept advising me that that was Cigna’s policy. I advised her that I had received e-mails regarding receiveing my payment before and again she just kept say ” that is not our policy” I finally requested a supvervisor, she put me on hold, came back and again advised me “that is not our policy” To make a long story short I requested a supvervisor 4 times and never was allowed to speak to one. I begin to wonder why you even have supervisor’s. When she came back the last time she said that they could not send me an email because it contained all my information then after dealing with her attitude for as long as I chose to I again asked for a supervisor, she put me on hold and then came back and said they could mail me a receipt which would just have the payment and the date it was paid . I assumed that would be done but it has not. I need my receipt as I file it with my Health Reimbursement Account. I asked her for the name of her CEO which she said she did not know. I guess my question is “what ever happen to good customer service?” It seems as if a simple request for a receipt of payment cannot be handled with out all the drama then it makes me question if I even want to do business with Cigna – probably not. I really don’t even expect any help from this comment but it might keep others from making the same mistake I did by choosing Cigna. I hope your CEO reads all the comments his company receives but I know how that goes too.

I just called to verify approval and cost for a prescription I need and was told by a csr named Juliana that I was dropped from the prescription plan that I had just used YESTERDAY. When I challenged Juliana with her response, she then admitted that I DO have Cigna RX until Feb. 1!! I spoke to a manager to express my disapproval of the way I was flat out LIED TO. Of course an apology was given me but I wanted to make sure this is NOT the way Cigna runs their company, so I spoke with Kelly from the President’s Office. She assured me this issue will be taken seriously and addressed.

I assure you Cigna takes NONE of its customer complaints seriously! You would not believe the lies, misinformation, poor service I have received as well. Here it is the end of 2015 and I am experiencing the same problems Loretta did! So talking to Kelly from the presidents office did no good! Cigna is a despicable company who is only interested in making money for shareholders (read their corporate page). I had same problems with a policy I had 10 years ago. Dropped Cigna then. Thought after a decade things would have changes, but no. Have had new policy exactly 25 days and already having major problems. I have reported to Medicare and wilo continue to do so untill corporate practices change. (I believe Cigna violates HEPA laws…)

Just spent an excruating 1/2 hr again with someone in your off-shore call center regarding a Cigna initiated error re The City of Waterbury retirees. This is not the first time I’ve had to do this. The City of Waterbury is self-funded, and Mayor O’Leary is very proactive. I’m sure he wouldn’t be pleased to hear abour all of these experiences, in light of the fact that when Cigna negotiated the contract, the City was told there would be difference in service from Blue Cross. That hasn’t been the case. Maybe it’s time to bring the call centers back to the US where people understand health insurance; and now it just got better. The refund company, Accent, Can’t close my case because they have to “research” why these employes don’t have Medicare Part B. Awesome!!!!!!!!

Had an SAH with berry anyurism and seizures, no approval on STD forced to go back to work so I can pay to get meds and see doctors. I am not diagnosed or started treatment on vasculitus but without being approved for Short Term Disability, I can not afford continued medical care. Is this the norm for how STD claims are done, withhold money until the sick and injured are forced back to work? Why bother with this type of coverage as it did nothing for my peace of mind; it did add to, anxiety compounded, stress elevated, high blood pressure elevated, all bad for my condition but my insurance company rep is not impressed nor does she care. Fill out this form, don’t care that you had a bleed in your brain, nor that you are sick all day long, get this paperwork done and send it to me or no money for you!!! 6 week and waiting for approval on claim for STD ; I give up I am getting approval to go back to work so my unknown health issue can be reviewed and treated. If I get fired for poor performance then that would not impact Cigna STD team either. If the added stress causes more health issues or my next brain bleed kills me I hope some one can use this information to get them self help. Had a diagnosis ten years back for Breast Cancer and that was easier to deal with then the STD at Cigna, sad but true!!

Hello, need to make a comment about your cigna te-drugs,com- It is very unfriendly and offers little information. I spend extended time calling to figure out what drug is being sent or the status.
IT WOULD BE NICE if like other sites [express scripts for example] you could show.
1. name of drug
2. RX number
3. at what point is the process etc.
4 conformation ship date
5 list of my drugs on file with name & number for easy re-ordering
6. your formulary is great and the staff is very helpful but your IT could save you payroll by updating your site to more user friendly. TIME IS MONEY FOR ALL OF US.
I don’t think as a consumer this is to much to ask
thank you for your time and consideration to update your site

I can not speak to a real person when calling tax compliance. Since January 2014, I have left my phone number and no one had returned 1 call. Cigna has not sent a 1099 orw-2 for the taxes I paid from my long term disability. I spoke to the IRS advocate and they are sending Cigna a letter regarding no payment to the IRS with the amount withheld. I guess big companies don’t care about little people.

Corporate officers need to have their contact information posted. We should be allowed to be heard. Especially when customer service cannot provide the answers.
I would like to speak to someone in corporate about the Lab services or lack of places or choices we should be allowed to use. You are being too cheap to pay Labs that provide better service. WE the customer pay you the CEOs to be good stewards of the money WE pay for our medical insurance. Instead of huge CEO salaries, the money needs to be invested back into our care. I’m tired of OUR money being abused and taken advantage of. You boast on your Facebook “Our goal is to inspire, champion, and celebrate that which makes you, the healthiest you.” and “To help improve the health, well-being and sense of security of the people we serve.” Well instead of just words, how about actions that prove it, put OUR money where it should be. I would appreciate a prompt reply from someone who has the authority to make a reasonable change in access to better Lab services.
Tracey Smith Perdue says
I would suggest Julie read Cigna’s corporate pages. All their talk about caring for “the healthiest you” is crap. Cigna is not interested in investing money to better help paying customers. All Cigna cares about is its 29 BILLION DOLLARS of earnings this year, that go to share holders, NOT the SICK customers who pay premiums and get the worst service I have ever seen!
