Chuck Anderson and his wife were operating a dog training business out of a boarding kennel in Minnesota in the early 1970’s. The couple met Don Tauer, who bred German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. Anderson and Tauer wanted to create their own business and in May of 1990, the first Chuck and Don’s Pet Food location was opened in Eagan, Minnesota.
Today, the company has 34 stores in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The company focuses on being a “home town” pet supply store that customers can rely on for everything from pet accessories to training, food to housing. Don Tauer retired in 2000 but still lends his name to the company. In 2014, Chuck and Don’s Pet Food launched an employee stock ownership program.
Chuck and Don’s Pet Food will open two new stores in 2016. The company had annual revenue in 2014 of $52.7 million and is listed as #4,366 on the Inc. 5000 list of Fastest Growing Companies in America.
In February 2019, the company was acquired by Independent Pet Partners for an undisclosed sum.
In January 2021, Chuck and Don’s announced that they were offering same-day delivery service.
In February 2023, the company announced that it was filing for bankruptcy and would close several locations.
Chuck and Don’s Pet Food maintains a corporate office in Edina, Minnesota.

Facebook reminded me of a post I made seven years ago today regarding Becky, then working in your Eagan store. I had broken my right humerous and dislocated my shoulder. She delivered food for my dog. Bless her. Here is my post:
“Update on dogfood crisis.
I rang up Chuck and Don’s which is an upscale dog food store about a mile away. I explained that my arm was still broken in three places and that I was out of dog food and couldn’t drive and could they deliver. I ordered about 50 pounds of Taste of the Wild fish version to make it worth their while, but then, I couldn’t find my wallet so I couldn’t pay for 50 pounds of dog food but the young lady on the phone remembered me as a regular customer and offered to deliver a small bag of Taste of the Wild, plus my dog’s current favorite Sweet Potato and Fish treats neither of which I could pay for, being without my wallet which is here somewhere. I need to clean the place so I can find it but it springcleaning is not for another week.
Becky is my heroine and and along with my brother will be nominated for knighthood, not that anyone listens to me.
I still have to square up with the store but sometimes you get in a pinch and the kindness of a Becky solves the problem of the moment.
The End.”

P.S. My boxer io has since died, breaking my heart, but I have another boxer, enzo, who also eats from your Eagan store. Sandy has been woderful.

The service at the Eden Prairie location has always been and continues to be excellent. I know they have had issues hiring but that is happening everywhere. I am curious why Chuck & Dons doesn’t try to recruit people with higher wages. It’s an excellent store, great service, great management, and great products. But anyone you try to hire is going to go elsewhere because you don’t raise your wages. Everyone has raised their wages to try to recruit and keep staff. Why aren’t you doing that? Why don’t you pay a competitive wage. I am glad that the store reduced its hours given the staffing challenges. But I have heard, not from anyone in that store, that Chuck & Dons may try to extend their hours again. Are you trying to drive staff away? One last comment: I am sorry you stopped your cat adoption program. I saw the last cat that was in there, and she was absolutely gorgeous. She was as happy she could be under those circumstances and she was well cared for. I just want to reiterate that everything is great at that store. But I am very disappointed with Chuck & Dons headquarters when it seems they are more concerned with profit and image than they are with the staff the run the store or potential hires. I sincerely hope you think about and seriously consider the impact good staffing has on your success.
