Brookdale Senior Living was founded in 1978.
The company operates independent and assisted living centers as well as retirement communities. In all, Brookdale Senior Living has 680 facilities with 67,000 bedroom units in 36 states.
The company’s facilities offer services to residents, including housekeeping, meals, 24-hour emergency response, transportation, and recreational activities.
Brookdale Senior Living trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BKD, is #750 in the Fortune 1000, and had $3.03 billion in revenue in 2020.
In 2013, a Brookdale facility in Bakersfield, California, refused to give CPR to a resident. It was later disclosed that Brookdale cited a policy to reporters that allegedly prohibited staff members from performing CPR on residents of its independent living facilities; however, the spokesman did not provide copies of the policy to reporters.
Brookdale later reversed its public position, saying that the staff member had misinterpreted the CPR policy. Police closed the Glenwood investigation without filing any criminal charges. The Bayless family said it had no intention of suing Brookdale over Lorraine’s death.
In 2018, the company rejected a $9 per share buyout offer from an undisclosed party.
In October 2022, a spokesperson for Brookdale stated that it would consider selling the business for the right price.

Hello my name is Patricia Boyer, my sister Marie Smith is a resident at Brookdale union. Today when l went to see her l was very disappointed in the way she and everyone in the building looked!! My sister has lost a lot of weight. I feel like my sister is dying and no one cares l am taken action with the local news to see if someone can see just the shape that this facility is in my sister doesn’t get the rest she needs and the food is deployable. I am trying my best to get someone to understand these people are not getting top care. Shemeka the manager is rude and speaker any kind of way to her employees. Susan is no better she never listen to your complaints!! If something happens to my sister l will definitely take it to court!!please address this soon as possible!! Thank you

My sister, Jane, pushed the nurses call button for three hours before somebody came in to help her. By then, she was in so much pain she was in tears. When I talked to her, her voice was trembling from the pain. My other sister and I called Brookdale Willowbrook in Houston, Texas for over an hour trying to let someone there know that she needed help. Nobody would answer the phones. We called the second floor nurses station AND the first floor nurses station and nobody answered. I wanted to drive over there but I knew I would not get in. Weekend visits are not allowed and nobody monitors the front desk. This happened this past weekend on 4/17/2021. What’s happening there on the weekends and how many other patients suffer from lack of attention until Monday morning? Don’t take your loved one to this place!

What a bad experience with Brookdale City View. Had issues with Billing sent several emails with no response.this was to Amy the administrator When I got a response it was alway I would get back to you buy the end of day. It never happened for a month and maybe 8-10 emails. When I finally got ahold of Tim the director same story. Spoke to him last night he was going to call me back first thing this morning. He informed me last night that do to my dad being on Medicaid which we are not using as the family can pay that someone else had to guarantee the account as this was company policy. I can’t find that anywhere and I asked why he said because the eviction process takes a long time. What a cold slap in the face as my Dad and Family have always been an asset to the Comunity and always paid our bills. Our family will always take good care of my dad who is a World War II veteran.

Brookdale Baywood Mesa AZ Memory care. The management staff fired via a telephone conversation. What I believe to be one of the best Activities Coordinator I have seen this far. Alot of the staff there are old shoulder towards people. And residents. And the supervisor staff is no better. How do you Terminate an employee that make the time to care and provide as such. Because a person lies on them claiming neglect that didn’t occur. Well my life companion in my thoughts was the subject of racism and Unequal Employment Opportunity. I personally have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

We have a terrible cook at Brookdale in Canton,GA.Her name is Chrissy. Friday June 22nd some of us did not get our lunch until 2:00 PM, The chicken was burnt on the outside and raw on the inside with blood showing, You can hear her cussing using the F word alot from the dining area. The food at lunch and dinner is always bland no taste or so spiced we can’t eat it. Our care givers come in and wake us up,help dress us,make beds and showers. They are in a hurry to get things ready in the dining room for breakfast.
Our caregivers do not have time to be a caregiver because they have to be a waitress at meals, taking our orders bring our drinks serving our food then taking dishes to kitchen washing napkins and table cloth, wrapping silverware in napkins then they come to get our trash and make beds then rush back to get everything ready for lunch so we do not get any care from our caregivers. i have heard people from the office talk to caregivers terrible in front of us and other co-workers. Please come to the Canton Brookdale and see how it is taken care of and how rude the office staff are. I don’t expect anything to be addressed if you are like the office staff at the Canton ,GA. office

I have a very close family member that works at one of these facilities (won’t say who/where because jobs are hard to come by here & she has to work) I despise her working there! The management is absolutely ridiculous! She is literally working today after being put out of work on a doctors note, she is pregnant in her first trimester & the doctor wanted her off her feet a few days due to bleeding! Was told she had to work or find her own coverage & work her weekend off! Was told this was brookdale policy, I’d like to see that policy in a handbook & have legal representation to take a look at that!
She has also been written up for a resident not giving a urine specimen on her shift & left for second shift to do! My question to this? How do you make someone in a cup if they say they can’t or doesn’t have to go?!
Supposed to be off on next holiday if you work the holiday before! How was she repaid for volunteering to work on thanksgiving? Had to work Christmas & New Year’s Day! What was Corp response? “What exactly would you expect us to do about this?”
Also had a girl just recently written up for being out on a doctors note & not finding her own coverage! What really?! Isn’t that what managers are for & part of their job?
Also just recently another employee was also out on doctors orders & told she had to work her weekend off! No she quit!
Some of these employees actually care about these residents but the manager nor corporation does care about their employees maybe that’s why they cant keep good responsible & reliable employees!

I worked at Brookdale facility for almost 10 years and I was assaulted by a family. the lady bought her mom to the facility for rehab she lived in a garden home, from the first day the family member was a problem she was speaking with the ADNS and was poking her in the chest the day before. the following day she came in and her mom had on underwear and she was angry, I told her that her mom requested them, she stated no I told her it was her right the family member became very confrontational and told me her mom ha no writes I advised her that while living her at the facility Robin Run that she did I explained to her that families donate new and old things and I found underwear that were new in a package but she continued to argue, so I asked her if it would be okay if I went and got a supervisor. I went to the ADNS and explained to her what was going on she said she would get the DNS and have her come. When I arrived back to the residents room the family member was asking the nurse for a gown, I then asked the family member if she wanted me to do it. she screams no and goes on saying how horrible of a CNA I am I said I can do it ma’am its my job as I went to reach for the gown she grabbed my wrist I screamed for her to let me go once she did my wrist was read a swollen. I stormed out the room with tears in my eyes headed to the administrative office. she took the family member in her office and talked to her. all she could tell me was thee family member was set her ways and she used to be the city treasure and her husband was judge, she never asked was I ok or if I wanted to file a police report or anything I went to the urgent care and was given a brace and pain meds. A few days later the family member bypassed to CNA and a nurse to come and try to tell me something about her mom I was not taking care of her mom I was actually on light duty with 5lb weight restriction. I went to the administrator office to ask her if she could tell the family member to stay away from me she said ” I cant do that just tell her your not taking care of her mom I told her I will have my lawyer file a restraining order the following week they took me out of the health care unit and placed me in the maintenance dept working as a admin assistant. I eventually had surgery 4/14, I had Dequervains tenosynotives and had to get a tendon remove. in July of 2017 I was fired mind you I only had ione write up in my file and it had the wrong name on it, they fired me for abuse I never in my 20 years of working as a CNA have gotten wrote up for abuse. but the girl that had maybe 4-5 abuse writes up was still there smh. They said I was force feeding a resident I would put the spoon up to his mouth he would move his head back then come and take a bite how is this abuse also his wife visited every day at lunch and dinner and always wanted to know what he ate or why he didn’t eat. At least I did try to feed him when others did that and he wouldn’t eat they would walk away. now thy have a lot of horrible CNAS and residents are not getting good care. I wouldn’t put my dog in one of Brookdales facilities

I so agree with the other people who have written complaints about Brookdale. My mom has lived in Brookdale Skyline in Colorado Springs for 4 1/2 years, ever since she suffered a major stroke where she can no longer talk or do numbers or use the TV remote or walk. What she can do is hear–with the help of her hearing aids–and then understand. In early August, her hearing aids were cleaned by a Brookdale approved lab, but the right one was no longer working. I took it into the facility where she purchased her hearing aids to have it fixed. They had to send the aid out to a lab to have it repaired: the microphone and the speaker were no longer working. This cost me $400 for a one-year warranty, which is how Hear Tech charges for their work. Because the aid was damaged by the Brookdale approved lab, I wrote a letter, with a copy of the repair bill and the reason for the repair, to Helen Whitener, Health Administrator, asking for reimbursement–not to me but to Mom’s account. I received no telephone call or letter about this request. Today is September 29, and I asked to see Administrator Whitener about my letter and my request. Guess what? Adminstrator Whitener said that Brookdale is not obligated to reimburse the $400 because the repair is listed as “warranty.” Like so many other Brookdale administrators, I found her cold and uncaring, only interested in the money they can make and keep.
The people who do the grunt work, the real work, for my mother are the CNA’s, and they are not paid well at all. Nor are they treated well, overall. The consistent atmosphere is “catch them being bad.” I have observed this on several occasions. The turnover of employees is appalling.
Never, ever, put your loved one in one of Brookdale’s facilities.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put your loved one into a Brookdale Facility.
1) management changes so much you never know who does what.
2) the caregivers are over worked and underpaid.
3) they make their own rules instead of following Brookdale’ policies.
4) high turnover with staff
5 MAjor issues with HR!!!! Wow…they treat their employees so badly!
I have seen really good senior care facilities and this is not one of them. They bring in 3.35 Billion $$ in 2014

Awful food, terrible leadership and it goes to show many people leaving specific bookdale’s!

I have absolutely ZERO faith in Brookdale. Putting in a complaint to them is like talking to the wall. I too would like to see a huge audit from top to bottom (which I am sure will trigger a massive lawsuit). Brookdale is in it for the money. Of course, you need money to stay open. But how about a little less greed and a lot more care. You can still be profitable without going cheap on salaries for the worker bees. The people that stick around are burnt out and one more death is just like another. Advice: Brookdale is the purgatory before death. Don’t go there. Might look pretty but it’s evil.

My Ex-Wife died in a Brookdale Home in Melbourne, Florida. She had been in “poor” health for years, and it was (apparently) a natural death. She died December 27, 2016 in her Brookdale Room. But, Brookdale Melbourne had the “nerve” to attempt to charge her account for January 2017 and February 2017 Room rent(nearly $10,000: even though she died the previous year. Brookdale then tried to charge “her” for 9 days rent for January 2017. It is against Florida law to charge a Dead Person Room Rent. Her Room Rent was $4,389/ month. She paid $4,389 Dec.1, 2016 for 31 days rent. Now, Brookdale is trying to Charge her an additional $1,359 for December: I.E. charging her for 40 days rent in a 31 day month; trying to “sneak in” an additional $1,359 for Dec.’s rent.. Does Brookdale think all people are stupid…..Harold

I live in your Statesman facility in Oklahoma City.
Over a month ago we had a rain storm and my apartment had a nasty leak in the ceiling of my bedroom. My bed, an antique, chest, several mementos, and the carpet all sustained water problems. The next several days, since no tarp was placed on the roof, additional rain added to the problems.
Now here we are again with water problems in my bedroom. There are plastic sheets, and pots and pans on my bed and the carpet. I also have bedroom furniture in my living room.
Additional rain is predicted and there are no plans that I know of to cover the roof. This lack of effective response or repairs shows a lack of diligence on your part.

I have first hand knowledge, as a previous resident at The Imperial Plaza located in Richmond, VA. If the iceberg were investigated, it would sink. . If families were honestly informed about living conditions (ie, treatment of on-going pest infestation to food menus), code violations, and failed inspections, there would be a mass exodus. I continue to maintain friendships with a few residents at Imperial Plaza. They have been verbally notified that Imperial Plaza has been sold. The limited dissemination of pertinent information to a vulnerable population is reflective of Brookdale’s insensitivity and/or indifference to the population they claim to have Clinical expertise. Voices need to he heard.

The three CEOs should make surprise visits at diff shifts to see how the residents are being treated and how the facility is kept. They should attend hometown meetings with residents and family and hear the truth of how things are ran. Its become about the bottom dollar. Brookdale senior living Kerrville Texas should be investigated both Guadulupe and Leslie street centers.

Brookdale
Union , Gastonia,N.C.
After reading some of the reviews below, it appears that most Brookdale facilities are the same.
My mom recently passed away after being in this facility in Gastonia,NC. She was there 1year. My sister and I had no other means to take care of her. We were constantly at the facility trying to make them do the necessary things(that we were struggling to pay the outrageous price for) to take care of her.
I could write a full book about all the issues we had at this place. I will list some.
They told us when she moved In they would replace the carpet which was filthy. That never happened, they just tried to clean with a small steamer at the facility.
The heat and air was a problem the whole time she was there. I even filed a complaint with
the corporate office and it still was never fixed. One day it would be 85 degrees and the next
, it would be 65.
The meals were horrendous. She lived on peanut butter and grilled cheese sandwiches. My sister fought the battle over the diet the whole time she was there. They would take down her likes and dislikes and things she couldn’t eat. Then, they would still bring the same things.
They only assisted her if one of the family was there to instruct them. You would think they would know how to assist the residents without being told everyday since that is their business.
The RN at the facility was useless. She never came out of the office and acted as though you were bothering her if you had a question.
You would expect to go for a pleasant visit, but would get there and the room would smell and she would be in dirty clothes. They never cleaned the room, the bathroom always smelled. Sometimes we would find the bed was made up with wet sheets.
The last couple weeks she was there, we were told by the health and wellness director they put her on a 2 person assist because she was having trouble getting up and down. Apparently they have a communication problem, and that was not relayed to all the workers. They let her fall twice after that.
All of the complaints were communicated to the director of the facility. To be fair there was 2 while mom was there. It seemed they did nothing.
We took my mom to the hospital and she passed away a week later. She was at the facility for 1 year. We never heard anything at all from anyone at Brookdale. How compassionate of them and it shows they are only in it for the money and do not care anything about the residents.

May 18th 2027 I placed my Husband in Brookdale Delta Memory Care in lansing Michigan.
I was a sured he could not get out of the facility.
On Sunday May 20th I received a call from Brookdale my husband was gone.
My concern is the place is a lock down home & he was not safe. To make matters worse. I wrote a check for 2667.72 cents & was told Brookdale would have to keep the check. I said we have a problem I stopped payment on the check. Then a nouther amount was told I would have to pay. 1,348.41cent. With a broken heart about a loved one, we were also being taken advantage of. Crushed seniors.

tazosmom at aol.com My mother, Mary Kelley, was a resident at the Penn Hills, PA facility from March 9, 2017 until March 24, 2017. In that short time she fell 3 times, missed breakfast 3 times (they forgot to get her for breakfast), had 2 showers and had HUNDREDS of ants on her window sill! We paid over $4000.00 on March 9, 2017, supposedly for her care until the end of March. I was told 30 days written notice was required to remove her. Notice was given effective March 24. Since then we have received no less than 5 bills in extremely different amounts from 3 different locations with no correct contact information! My brother was given a number which was for Direct TV! He finally spoke with SOMEONE in Tennessee (SOMEONE wouldn’t give his last name) who was supposed to “look into the matter ” and return his call on Thursday, May 11. Needless to say, there has been no return call! I am firmly convinced that this organization is in business only for profit and uses highly unethical business practices in dealing with the elderly and their families! A complaint to BBB and poor references probably won’t settle our problem but at least it might save another family from falling for the same underhanded practice!

I was given a reference number for my complaint which is 1709BSC10329. Have heard from no one from Corporate. There are mice living in our Ridgmar Ft Worth, TX Complex and it serves food. So sad for 90 yr old paying what they charge and having to live with mice in her apartment, not enough drivers to schedule a doctor apt on Friday, not enough wait staff to serve a meal in less than an hour, no communication with front desk. Director does not tell the truth about Health Inspections or lack therefore.

I worked at Brookdale Stonestreet in Louisville Ky for a month. I was a resident assistant and worked 3rd shift, 10 pm to 6am. I was met with unsafe conditions, no securtiy on site and no cameras. Some doors were left unlocked and parking lot was dark. I also was met with a hostile and downright insane employee. I had a horrible and traumatizing encounter with this employee and as a result I left my job early the nite it happened for my own safety. I contacted my employer the next morning and they said they would investigate my claims and contact corporate. A few days later I was informed I was let go and my claims were unfounded, this employee kept her job. I have not received my last check and the facility is trying to make me come in and fill out a resignation letter. I am considering a lawsuit if I dont get my paycheck. If anyone on this forum has a family member at this facility move them ASAP. Its not a good place and very unsafe, these people deserve better treatment.

I believe you. It’s a horrible place. Tami places favoritism and cliff is clueless. Nurses stealing pills and bringing loaded guns to work. That got stolen. Which put everybody in danger and they didn’t care. Certain employees don’t have to do work. Management telling other employees your business. As soon as a person get written up they know. They know who’s getting fire before the person knows. It’s dirty and they never have enough food for the residents. They take anybody for money. Residents who need more care and should be in a hospital or nursing home. Something horrible is going to happen in that place of somebody don’t do something. Going be to work is like going to hell.

This is the worse place I have every worked at. The food is gross. They just have food sitting out in the containers for days and then serve it to the residents. Nate the kitchen manager steals the food. He comes to work dirty. But they love him cause he’s the yes man. They allow the residents to talk to you like you are dirt. The residents with hot, kick and spit on you. I have heard the residents call the black employees XXXXXXXXs. We as employees get treated bad. But the black employees get it worse. It’s diryy and the rooms have termites and bed bugs. There are mice running around. They never have enough supplies. Where is the money going? Not to the employees. We don’t make enough. We changing briefs, giving showers, giving medicine. Which I thought we wasn’t suppose to. We serve the dinner room and clean it up. The page for everything. They use us like we are slaves. Can you turn my tv over, can you pick up the garbage that I threw on the floor cause I didn’t feel like throwing it away. A resident dog going around biting ppl. Actually seriously ignore somebody. Using the bathroom on the floor. It’s resident that take 2 and 3 ppl to lift. I thought this was assisting living not a nursing home. This place need to be shut down .

The employees at Brookdale in West Columbia SC suck!! They have no respect at all for their residents. I witnessed them pouring out tea and ice right in front of a ladies face after she asked for some. I witnessed employees asleep in the front lobby while residents are pressing the call button. I’ve also witnessed a lady asking to be changed and the employee walked right past her to go smoke. They never bathe the residents at all! Its so very sad to see these poor helpless people be treated so badly. I am going to call the local DHEC office and report these things! Whomever own and operates this facilty should be made to stay there and be treated as their employees treat the residents. But u can bet your bottom dollar this will be reported ASAP!

Brookdale Overland Park

My mother was placed here for rehab that was to take two months per her Orthopedic doctor. In the past (four) rehab stays she was up walking, doing stairs etc in the allotted time by medicare 20 days. With that said my following statement is based on my families personal experiences. Several issues from dirty reused bed pans to dispensing wrong medications.
1. Employee A changed my mother’s diaper and placed a new dry pee pad under her and on top of three layer’s of pee soaked pads and sheets. My mother sat like this for four hours and this was not addressed until family stripped her bed and cleaned mattress. Employee A returned from lunch and was questioned about what had done. She said “I went to lunch and I thought she’d be ok until I returned” and “I took the cheap way out” OUTRAGEOUS!
2. Employee B removed a dirty, dried, poop bedpan out of the trash, which we marked and photographed before tossing it. This same bed pan was removed from the garbage 5 separate times within two days. OUTRAGEOUS!
3. Employee C used the bathroom trash can and the above poop pan to prop up her leg to shower, also photographed. OUTRAGEOUS!
4. Employee D dispensed the wrong amount of vitamin D3. With some investigating with this nurse supervisor we found that two different medications of different strengths were stored in the same bottle. When we asked employee D he said, “Why are you making problems” Left the room to later return and apologize. OUTRAGEOUS!
5. Employee D had a nursing staff meeting in my presence and discussed each patient and referred to them by room numbers. First words out of this nurse Supervisor to her staff “We’re not billing medicare enough, so make sure you do your notes” OUTRAGEOUS!
7. Employee E left s**t on the bathroom toilet and when asked to check the bathroom she didn’t see anything wrong. OUTRAGEOUS!
6. Employee F will be all of the therapy let’s just say, less than ideal… I had to supply our own, slide board (only 2 in the facility) a walker, and was asked to bring a wheelchair. OUTRAGEOUS!
8. Employee G the social worker should help solve and de-escalate any and all issues chose to argue and cause more unpleasantness. OUTRAGEOUS!
After several and I mean several incident reports and a long chat with Executive Director Vogler we left this facility. (Vogler was handed and asked to dispose of the XXXXXty bedpan.)
I have researched numerous “skilled nursing facilities” in two different states. This facility was recommended by her Ortho Dr. My mother has gone through 5 different surgeries and horrible care to not be able to walk.
What looks good on paper is NOT what you get.

On Sunday March 26th I was contacted by Horizon Bay who said my 88 year old father told them he wants to go to the doctor, he has blood in his urine. He has worn a catheter for 2+ years. I asked them if they could check to confirm it’s blood and NOT to call 911 and that I would be there in 10 minutes and I’d take him to the hospital. I arrived 10 minutes later and wouldn’t you know, they ignored me and called 911 to bring him across the street, as if a UTI was a life or death immediate emergency. This was against my request, because there was no need to pay for an ambulence. Well in making him travel that way the hospital never received any records of his medication and somehow thought he was there for a heart problem. So, 48 hours later he had not received a single one of the 17 pills he takes on a daily basis from a bypass years and years ago. He started to get major anxiety and withdrawl from some of the medications because he was in the process of weaning off an anti depressant. Long story short, they had no knowledge of his prescriptions and therefore prescribed him something that made him psychotic at the hospital to the point of him kicking out a window. NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE OCCURRED AT ALL had my request been acknowledged. He is still in the hospital, at 88, scared out of his mind now, and it is all this facility’s fault. In 3 years he has never had a UTI even with the catheter and now has had 2 in less than a month living here.
I am also of course having billing problems, and was overcharged $500+ on my first bill.
Aside from being a beautiful facility and the dining service being excellent, along with the activities, the medical management at that place REALLY STINKS. I have had nothing but issues, rudeness and nastiness out of the nursing staff there the entire month of our first month’s stay. What a way to welcome someone that is paying $5K/month.

Billing problems seem to be the norm. If they over charge just 3 people at each of their locations what they did our family they would be stealing tens of millions each year. Time a Class Action Law Suite is the only way to stop them.

My sister has been a resident at the Brookdale assisted living facility in Renton WA. She is on the copes program, as are the vast majority of the residents. In August she went into the hospital and ended up having emergency surgery. At the end of August she was discharged from the hospital. Due the number of medical issues needing to be addressed during healing she was admitted to a nursing home for recovery.
At the end of August I called Brookdale to find out what I should do to ensure that my sister did not lose her room. I assumed that the same process would be in place 2 years ago when my sister ended up in hospital for a month and then for another month in rehab before returning to Brookdale. Two years ago we paid $300 to hold my sister’s room – we were specifically told we could not use my sister’s money for this as it was not allowed by the state.
When I spoke with Dorrie in August she told me they really wanted my sister to return and would be happy to work with us. We discussed what happened last time and the $300 pmt. I also asked what I should do about her September payment (she pays all but $60 a month of her SS as her participation). I told Dorrie that I wasn’t sure how soon my sister would be able to return.
Dorrie to told me that if the $300 was a problem, they would be willing to work with us as they did not want to lose my sister as a resident and instructed me to go ahead and pay her participation for September, with the proviso that “they could always refund it” if my sister was not able to return. So I made the payment as always.
My sister remains in the nursing home (she spent 3 days in the hospital last week) and I am not certain when (of if she will be able enough to return to assisted living.
2 weeks ago I called Dorrie, and we again discussed holding her room. She told me she needed to “talk to corporate” and that she would call me back the next day. I did not receive call from her and today called again. She told me that she had just spoken with corporate yesterday and they had agreed to hold my sister’s room for her usual participation amount ($967) and $300.00. I was shocked. This was not what we discussed. At no point was I ever informed of this. I would never have agreed to it.
Dorrie tells me that they are keeping my sister’s $967.00 and wanted another $300 for September and then the $1267.00 for October (I learned of this today 9/29/16). Had I been aware of this I would have made arrangements to put my sister’s possessions into storage a month ago. We received a letter from DSHS saying that we were to pay her participation for September to the nursing home, which I cannot do as Brookdale is keeping the $967 payment. My sister does not have any money aside from her social security. I would never have sent my sister’s participation for September had I had any reason to believe that this would happen. It feels like extortion and taking advantage of poor disabled elderly.
They claim that this is in the lease that apparently went into place when Brookdale bought the facility from Emeritus, which they claim my sister signed. As her POA, legal, financial and healthcare I have no knowledge of this. It certainly wasn’t disclosed to me.
I now have to go see my sister in the morning and tell my sister that she is losing the only home she has known for 10 years. This is dismaying beyond words. My sister is lucky that she has siblings that are able to help.

Also, just for your FYI, I talk to many of the families that come in (I have a dog and everyone stops to pet her), and they ask me how I like it here. I just thought you might need to know that many of them have told me that since this Brookdale has changed hands, it has gone WAYYYYY down hill and they don’t like it at all. It’s just that people are afraid of retaliation against their family members so not many say anything.
Now, I have nothing to gain by telling you this, I truly just thought you might like to know.

I have been having a problem with a certain person that works at the Brookdale Asst. Living where I reside. I reside at the one in Brighton, CO. There is one person here that serves lunches and works the floor on certain days, and she got upset with me because I would not move from a chair that someone else decided to sit in and shove me out of the way. I got upset (not about moving to another chair, but because I wasn’t even asked, just shoved over), so I sat there when the person came out just to let him know I won’t be pushed around, then it was done and over with. I moved to the other chair and all was fine. Except this one person who works here. Her name is Melina, and she has (since the day I moved here), tried to push me around. She will not let me go into the dining room to get ice or anything because she says they are serving and she “needs the space”. This got so bad that one time she pushed me back with my walker and stopped me from entering the dining room. I have tried and tried to tell them about this, and today I was told off by the nurse here because she says that Melina (the person in question), is right and nobody can go into the dining room while serving. When Tony (from corporate office) was here, and also when Holly was here, they BOTH told me that this is OUR HOUSE, where we live, and we can go into the dining room if we want, nobody is to tell us where we can and can’t go (within reason). THE FACT IS, I DO NOT GET IN THE WAY, I make it a point to get against the wall or stay out of the way, and I’m only in there a minute. Well, now it has gotten to where Melina will NOT come into my room and give me ice when she goes around. SHE GIVES IT TO EVERY SINGLE ROOM BUT MINE. When I mentioned that, the nurse (LeeAnn) told me that “she doesn’t come in because you told her not to knock when it was lunchtime, and it was close to lunch. I TOLD HER NOT TO KNOCK CONSTANTLY TO ASK ME IF I WAS GOING TO LUNCH because she knows I don’t go out there for lunch, and what DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH GIVING ME ICE??? I live here, too, and I am NOT getting the services I am supposed to because of Melina’s attitude, but she is good at talking her way out of things. I am not in that diningroom enough to warrant this, or long enough. I expect the same services that everyone else is getting, and I will TELL you why I think I get singled out like this. There have been other problems that had to be addressed when I first moved here because I am THE YOUNGEST ONE HERE, and I know what my rights are and I won’t be pushed around by someone that is used to doing that because most of the people here either LIKE being totally taken care of or their families like it. I am fairly functional and only 64 years old, and if someone tells me I can’t do something (like they didn’t want to give me the code for the front door, so I couldn’t get out until Holly made them, BECAUSE THIS ISN’T A JAIL), I will approach someone and tell them that I want the code because I am not locked in here, some of the staff doesn’t like that. AND, the person that I was initially having the problem with at my table happens to be a “favorite” of Melina’s, so now it’s become a personal vendetta. NOW, I WON’T EVER GO INTO THE DINING ROOM, it’s not worth being treated like this, and I am really getting tired of having to argue all the time for what is rightfully the law because I am YOUNG and know the laws. I feel absolutely, positively discriminated against. There have been other things too, but I won’t get into that.
Thank you for your time,
Debbie Dahl

Brookdale San Marcos California has been a very bad experience for our family in the last six months or so to have our mother live there. We must visit her daily to make sure she is not in any issue due to the lack of quality care. The staff seems to turnover so often and that tells me there is a bigger problem with the operation. Ever since Brookdale replaced the operation manager about six months ago the quality level of service has gone down and the trust we had feeling our mother was in safe hands is gone. We are looking at moving her if this situation continues. The most used words I receive from there, “I’m sorry”.

Hearing constant complaints from a loved one about the way things are handled there. How they’re not respected or heard while trying to bring up important issues. They love their job but are treated unfairly and are being extremely overworked, weeks in a row one sometimes no days off at all. How do you expect people to be taken care of properly when your employees are being treated so horribly? Afraid to speak up because there is so much favoritism going on. Do legal actions need to be taken for things to be set right? I would like to know that something will be done and that things will be set right.

I have read several posts and i have to say, i have had many of the same experiences others have had. I am moving my mother to a memory care residence that is more suitable for the care she needs and deserves. Brookdale Lakeview IL a CNA told my mom to get her diaper on and my mom cursed her. The employment was then directed to call me by the RN Facility Director at 10:30pm on a Saturday evening because mom cursed.
When I attempted to explain mom is a proud woman and she may want to refer to mom’s depends differently, the employee hung up on me. When I addressed the situation with senior management, they made excuses. I recommended sensitivity training and in one ear and out the other. I am moving mom after 1 year in the crummy facility where people have zero compassion, poor communication skills, and a total disregard for the elderly!!!

The terrible attitudes from the people on that staff were atrocious to me I would never recommend one of their facilities to anyone and I will be calling the Health and Welfare Department for seniors to report what happened. There were many many more things too

I thought it was just the Brookdale location in Biloxi, MS but from the looks of the reviews, the cooperation as a whole really needs to be investigated. The problem in Biloxi is managements. They are so worry about bring in money. Residents that clearly need to be on a skill unit are accepted. This pose a great risk for employees and residents. Management does not show respect to their employees. While being praise for their service, management turns around and belittle them at the same time. Their is a great deal of lapse in communication. The director does not even speak at times. Favoritism is show openly. Employee constantly complain about errors made to their checks but nothing is being done to address these issues. I am writing this in hopes that corporate will look into the facility. Which means someone goes and talk one on one with staff and residents. Everyone needs a job to provide for their families but the fear of retaliation or being fired, it is difficult for some employees to speak up. I am a firm believer if you treat your staff well then they will go the extra mile to provide for the residents. After all the main goal is the care of the residents not how much money you can make the facility at the least amount of care provide. The facility is always short staff. Staff are allowed to bring children to work just because management does not want to come in to cover. I would not recommend anyone for employment there nor leave love ones there for care. Please do something to make this cooperation a better place for residents and employment.

Jackie, et al—all that you mentioned is occurring at their Jensen Beach, Florida facility…I am going to have to transfer my family member who is in memory care to another facility. Brookdale’s corporate team is comprised of specialists in acquisitions, REITs & churning properties. The majority have virtually no experience, training or background in healthcare/geriatrics.
The turnover at facility management positions is appalling. Care positions are grossly understaffed & underpaid, though the majority are caring & compassionate, which I find amazing, given their workload. However, now the level of care is deteriorating.
I won’t even go into the multitude of issues with their finance departments!
Promised programs have never materialized. The last three times I have visited, at different times of day, memory care residents had been herded in their wheelchairs to in front of the television.
In short, Brookdale Communities have become a warehouse for the elderly, at inflated prices and of empty promises—with only one singular avaricious goal: a burgeoning bottom line that has failed to even benefit its investors. (A year ago, Brookdale [BKD] traded on NASDAQ for more than $15.50; today’s close? $6.67)
Anyone who is entertaining the thought of placing a loved one in a Brookdale facility should ignore their effusive sales pitches and RUN, not walk, out the door.

After six days at 10 Oaks in Lawton, OK (A Brookdale facility), my father in law received no hygiene care what so ever. He fell because he was allowed to wander without his walker and no one was attentive enough to notice. After he fell, we removed all of his clothes to look for injuries and found he had a huge yeast infection/diaper rash because he was being left in soiled Depends daily. It was then we discovered, he had not been bathed since he arrived. After a worthless “care team” meeting, we promptly removed him from that horrible place. It looks great on the surface, but there is serious neglect happening in the Clare Bridge unit. We are still waiting for a refund and we continue to receive bills because Corporate doesn’t realize he is no longer a tenant. Ridiculous.

I concur with Beth, I removed my mother from Brookdale and received intolerable behavior from the staff. The place smells so bad of urine that it is occasionally is covered by a potent coverup. I overheard a resident state that the urine smell was bad but the coverup was bothering her eyes and worse. What is wrong with getting to the source by cleaning rather than covering, I can not imagine working there.
I feel their all about the money as that is why they are angry with my moving my mom. They have residents sitting in the lobby as if they are about to make the great escape. They are propbably there as that is where the action is (people coming and going)! The facility has residents that are functional, marginally functional mixed with Dementia and Alzheimer’s residents.
I felt so sorry for the residents we left behind as some I new personally prior to their being put in this situation..
These conditions are disgusting.

Is it common practice to NOT answer emails or return requested follow-up calls?
I submitted an email followed by a second because no one bothered to respond to the first and I have yet to receive a response. In addition I spoke with a rep at one of your facilities, who said they would look into my request for me, since no one could be bothered to answer my email and the employees working the customer service number are clueless. I specifically requested the rep contact me today with a follow up call as to what was found out. Did I receive a call? NO!
The poor customer service I am receiving makes it very clear as to why this company is having so much difficulty. Do NOT think I will be sending a love one to any of your facilities, nor would I recommend you,.

My husband just left your facility today. I will be sending a letter in regard to the care he received there. There are so many things to mention I don’t know where to start. I called the facility and there was no one there to take my call. The director, marketing manager , the nurse, we’re not there yet. This was at 10:45am. Letter to follow.
