City Sports was founded in 1983 by two high school friends who were avid Tennis players. After being unable to find sporting equipment for their game anywhere near their hometown of Boston, the pair opened their own store in Boston, Massachusetts, with the main emphasis being on running gear and tennis equipment.

The company grew substantially over the years but declared bankruptcy in 2015 and all stores were closed.

Two brothers, Blake and Brent Sonnek-Schmelz, purchased the name and reopened the eCommerce site, as well as a store in Red Bank, New Jersey. The company plans to open three more locations in 2017, including Boston, New York, and Philadelphia.

City Sports still offers a wide range of clothing and footwear, as well as other sports equipment, including yoga gear and backpacks.

The company maintains a corporate office in Eatontown, New Jersey.

I have been charged for 2 years every month twice and now after talking to the manager Vicky HE at the Hayward, Ca location she tells me that she can refund the money cause I didn’t cancel my old account… I had to chase her for 10 days straight until she responded to a phone call. This is very disappointing… I know a lot of people who are going to there to work out but trust me I will make sure everyone knows about my experience.

Question to the higher management. How do you train your people? How important is customer service? are you guys planning on long-term business or just make the money and not care about the customers.

Very disappointed and I will share that with a lot of people/

I have been a member for about three weeks. Everything was going great until I saw a female employee going into the men’s locker room to clean it. Last time she went in, I was completely naked. This is not acceptable and needs to stop. The location is in Hayward, CA.

I was a member for about a year the gym was OK Customer Service in the front wasn’t that great even when I canceled to move a different city it was a hassle and also they didn’t even ask me why I was canceling. When the paperwork or membership was canceled they printed out paperwork and just rolled up into a ball and threw it in the garbage didn’t ask me if I wanted a copy or anything. I just thought that was rude

My husband and I started joining CitySports to get exercising into our daily lives. We signed up for the Monterey location in San Jose since it was new and close to where we live.

We went today (5/16/2019) around 6pm. 45 minutes later, we were trying out some new exercises that my husband learned last week. One of the personal trainers (Maddie) walked by us and said, “What’s the point of doing the exercise if you’re not going to do it correctly?” She slowly walked away. (My husband has been insulted by her in the past when she was trying to promote having a personal trainer. She told my husband “well, when you’re ready to care about your health then you can come to me”.) It was rude, unprofessional, and unnecessary. I complained to their front desk and left the complaint.

Personal trainers, in my opinion, are supposed to be motivational and supportive whether they know you or not. Over the boundaries to be this rude, insulting members who are trying their best without even acknowledging them. Then walking away like it’s nothing is rude.

On October 27, 2018 I went into City Sports, Richmond, Ca. To get a tour of the gym. Kenny the Sales Rep who gave me the tour was nice, very informative, and helpful. I decided to get a membership using two separate credit cards. I told Kenny I only had one on me that I needed to go home and get the other credit to pay my initiation fees plus first and last billing in full $212.98 total. He told me if I leave and come back I would loose my first time membership special promo. I paid half of $106.49. Kenny put the remaining $106.49 on auto pay to have it debited from my account on on November 4, 2018 just in case I decided not to come with my other credit card. I went home got my other credit card.
I went up to Kenny to pay the remaining balance of $106.49 he told me he doesn’t take payments the front desk does. Kenny did not tell the front desk personnel about the auto pay set up he had done for November 4th and the front desk apparently didn’t see it when I paid the remaining balance. On November 4, 2018 the $106.49 was debited from my account. I went in personally to talk with Kenny about resolving the issue and getting a refund for the overcharge. I explained to him what had happened he acted as though he didn’t know what I was talking about, was rude, and mocking me. He told me he could not help me with the refund he is only a sales rep. There is only one person that gives refunds and she was not there at that time to come back tomorrow. I was upset that the situation was not taken care of and Kenny offered no help such as, making a note to my membership account of the refund so when the person came in she can take care of the refund overcharge. He also, did not apologize or offer anything for the inconvenient. On November 5, 2018 I went in to ask for my refund to be credited back to my account. The front clerk said it was done and handed me a receipt. The next day I called my bank to check on it and that $106.49 had cleared as being paid NOT pending a refund. I had to make a claim with my bank sending them proof of payment in full from the credit cards My bank credit the money into my account until City Sports refunds my $106.49. I am very disappointed with the lack of knowledge for showing great customer service and doing there jobs accurately and correctly. I wanted to share what had happened to me so others wouldn’t go through it as well.

I have been going to the City Sports Club location in San Jose, CA on Cherry Ave. for over a year. More times then not the instructors of their group fitness classes on the schedule (especially spinning) do not show up. I have gone to the spinning classes at 5:45am the past 3 Wednesday and Fridays and on Saturday’s at 9:15 and although there is an instructor assigned no one shows up to teach. The classes are full of participants waiting, and no update is given until they decide to give up waiting and leave. This is very unprofessional. We complain to the front desk and ask for management and we are told that there is no manager on site to help and they have no idea why the instructors are not showing up. PLEASE DO SOMETHING about this asap. You have may people who are looking to change clubs if this continues to happen.

I finally convinced myself to join a gym and since my son is a member of your club I decided to join the club on 6/28. I had an appointment with Kelyn on 6/30 (very professional and nice young lady) which she was trying to sell me personal trainer sessions. Then Andrew joined us and he offered me $1,269 for 18 sessions and I told him I can’t afford that. Then he said one time deal he can offer me $999!
Then he went on asking me if I take any medication for blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. I told him no I don’t take anything. He told me that “I’ll get them in the future the way that my weight is! Seriously? He went on asking me, “what do I see when I look at the mirror?” OH MY GOD! It’s none of his business what I see in the mirror.
Since when does City Sports employees predict the future? Was he really trying to tell me that I am fat and unhealthy? Very unprofessional!
I was very angry and offended. Who is he to tell me that I will be getting sick in future. Is he a doctor? Has he seen my blood work?
Very disappointed. It took me a long time to convince myself to join a club and this is what happened to me on my 1st day.
    follow up calls and emails:
I followed up with several calls to cancel my membership and the person that I was suppose to talk to was never available (Brant). Finally, he called me back on 7/7 and canceled my membership. He told me that I will not get my refund!
I have not used your facility even once. I told him that I’ve been trying to reach out to him but he wasn’t available in response he told me yes this thing happen sometime. This things are costing me $148.98.
Please refund my money, I have been humiliated and insulted by your employee and now I am not getting my money back.

That is just very rude and unprofessional they should not have to go that far to ask you questions like that. It’s not their Business to know that WOW. I recently cancelled my membership because of similar reasons They are just ridiculous for that. If some one doesn’t want their membership any more they should respect your decision.

All I ask is please don’t kill us old folks before our time hygiene to us is number one we want to live as long as possible we don’t need help from a unsanatized bathroom and dirtypool and Jacuzzi pool floor area. If anyone if corporate has the leverage to do something about this thank you. [Ps I like the gym I just don’t want to die before my time because of poor hygiene and attention to details] meaning the most important part of the gym the wet ares.. not standing around and socializing with co workers.
