True Value hardware stores got its start in 1948 when John Cotter and 12 other stores began a cooperative under the name Cotter & Company. Over the years, acquisitions and sales were made, including American Hardware & Supply, Coast to Coast Corporation, and Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Company.
Today, True Value is still a cooperative of hardware stores and has more than 5,000 participating members. The company focuses on home improvement products, tools, and general hardware items such as screws, nails, lumber, and locks. This co-op supports its vast network of retailers through 12 regional warehouses and more than 3,000 associates.
The company also uses other names as a part of their co-op including Party Central, Grand Rental Station, Taylor Rental, Induserve Supply, and their largest, Home and Garden Showplace.

May 14, 2020, my first visit to a True Value store, not the best experience. Those who worked there – some wore “masks” some did not and they certainly could care less about the 6″ distancing rule. Seeing that, I did not stay and won’t go back. The simplest thing to do is to follow the County guidelines ensuring the safety of customers and workers. This store in the Town Center Plaza in Palm Desert didn’t care.

I recently purchased a quart of Minwax stain from True Value. I have been trying to find a color match to a table,as I am building another piece to set along side it. As per the instructions on the can, I opened the can, stirred it, and tested the stain on a small piece of wood. The picture on the can showed a color that looked like it would match the table I’m trying to match. Unfortunately it was not even close…the color on the can was nothing like the stain in the can…I could not use it. I returned it to the store for a refund. The manager would not refund my money, because “It had been opened”. I’d like to know how how I can test the color without opening the can? Especially when the picture on the label is no where near the same as the stain in the can. I have been building furniture for over 25 years, have tested many shades of stains, and never once have I been refused a refund on stain that was not right…and I have done this with Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, and Ace Hardware. There has NEVER been a problem with any one of them…EVER!! I assure you this is the LAST time I will ever shop at a True Value store. I don’t like being cheated!

I visited my local True Value in Norwalk, Ca. to purchase a lavatory strainer. I went with my cousin because he needed to buy some working gloves. A female employee who refuse to give us her name began to follow him all over the store and would not let him try on the gloves and told him he should his size. When asked for Supervisor Name they said Joe and did not know his work hours or a number to reach him. When I asked the woman why she kept following him she said she had the right to refuse service. I said yes with a probable cause and she just kept smiling. Employees said that I needed to contact corporate office but they did not know #. I have been shopping there since 1999 and had never experienced any problems with any employee. I would like for someone from corporate to contact ASAP bettyboop_702001@ yahoo.com

Your Auto Insurance Company hired a third party company called York Risk Services. They (David Burkhart) a claim adjuster has lied to me three times and I have only requested a copy of the check that he has originally and continues to tell me to exist but have not received after 9 days in the mail. Plus it was mailed us mail yea! right!. They say the IRS is the worst run company in America and even they stopped mailing checks via USPS. makes one wonder. I would like to verify the checks were not intercepted by criminals and that the address is correct and that there was and is a check in route to me. But it seems no one at York can email this to me. I have all the email correspondence and recorded phone calls if anyone would care to finish the job York Risk Services was hired to do. Please my car needs more attention than the funds I could not afford but have already paid out of my pocket now my other financial obligations are suffering.

Today, 10/17/2017 I went to the True Value @ 1011 Beaver Grade Road in Moon Twp, PA 15108. /the ad stated it was good thru today, I wanted WD-40 and tarps. Neither was available. Why is this??? Do you stock very little inventory? This is my third poor experience with the same store. The other 2 times were this spring, I went the first day of the sale for fertilizer and they had none. Really, the first day of the sale!!! Next time a week or so later I went for dog food, 3rd day of the sale, same thing…we don’t have it. Why put out an ad if you aren’t going to carry the product. My last comment, there were 3 – 4 sales associates standing around chatting and no customers in the store. I was there @ ~ 1145. I guess I will find another True Value or go back to the box stores instead of trying to support local

I purchased a generator on 10/07/2017 in Gulfport MS. We wanted to be prepared for hurricane Nate. The storm was so minimal that we never lost power. I tried to return the NEVER opened generator to the same store I purchased it. A sign on the door stated items purchased on 106 and 10/7 /2017 are not returnable. When I bought the item Bill the cashier never stated no returns, also the receipt does not not state no returns. Bill told me his boos at the store made the decision to not take any returns on all items sold on these dates. I want to know if this is a company decision or a store manager idea. This is poor practice and believe me, I work with many lawyers as I am in real estate, and boy do I have questions for them. All I want is to return a perfect UNOPENED item NEVER used. If this doesn’t happen, let the fun begin with all my lawyer friends!!!!

This is a complaint against your store at 129 N Main St jackson, tennessee 37556. I purchased a cattle prod a few weeks ago. it came and was defective Batteries ere dead, I put new ones in still dead, /cost $39,98. On 4 separate occasions I e-mailed them with no reply,. I then opened a case with e-bay but consequently lost. I repeatedly asked this store to try and provide me with a box that would fit this item as it would be almost impossible to find one to fit tihs awkward item 29inches long. No reply. Were I to return it it will cost me several dollars to find a box, cost of new battries, postage, etc. So why ask me to send back a truly defective item or make such a fuss about shipping me a box. I have looked on faceb ook and this particular store gets all 1 stars and unflattering comments about the staff in general. I would appreciate if you would look into this matter and perhaps either get me a box with postage affixed to it so I can send this piece of junk back or just chalk it up to a defective item that belongs in the trash. I am 82 years old and live on a fixed income so even spending $39.98 was a strain. thank you for your attention to this matter. And please at least instruct your help to be a little more courteous and not so rude. it doesnot make southern hospitality look too good. Danice Casper

I’ve shopping at my local True Value hardware for around 20 plus years and have never gotten any “rewards” in the mail. My TRV ID# is 3406036577. Is the “rewards program” a scam? Please let me know so that I can spend my money at another hardware store (not at True Value).

i placed and order 4/10/17 for an item your had on sale. It was a Precision Products TBS4500PRCGY 100 lbs. Tow Behind Broadcast Spreader . on 4/13/17, they wrote me back saying the order was cancelled. I called customer service and a woman told me it was cancelled because the warehouse had none in stock.
Why would a responsible company like True Value resort to a ” bait and switch ” tactic as low as this. They would not honor the sale price so why anyone even bother to shop at True Value !
