Paul Iams founded The Iams Company in 1946. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and worked as an animal nutritionist.
At the time of the company’s founding, pets were generally fed table scraps.
In 1950 Iams created an animal based dry dog food and called it Iams 999.
In 1969 Iams developed a new dog food and named it Eukanuba.
Over the years the company has developed and patented many nutritional advances for animals, including vitamin A to help prevent weight gain in animals, Dental Defense which helps to reduce tartar build-up, and formulas that help animals maintain muscle.
In 1975 Clay Mathile bought half the company, and in 1982 he bought the other half, becoming the sole owner.
In 1999, after growing the company significantly, he sold Iams to Proctor & Gamble.
Today The Iams Company sells dog food and cat food in more than 70 countries worldwide, though North America accounts for most of the company’s sales.

Extremely disappointed to see IAMS using unaltered animal actors in your ads. Having worked in
the humane field since 1986, the pet over population has always been a problem. I do understand
the use of animal actors however it would seem prudent to shoot the ad from a different angle. I did
notice this is the same ad that Petsmart pulled as they actively promote spay/neuter. I encourage all
pro spay/neuter pet owners to voice their concerns.
Please consider a change in your advertising messages.
Thank you

I too take exception to an UN-neutered dog in an ad. It sends the wrong message. Very disappointing.

I fed IAMS dog food for 10 yrs and never had a problem with the food until last OCT 2017 when my healthy German Shepherd died after opening a new bag of Large breed dog food. When I called the company two different times, I found out they had lied to me about receiving any calls from consumers dogs getting ill or dying from their food. They told me that there was a change in their dog food. Now a year later, I have tried three times to get information from them with no success. Nebraska plant is where the tainted food came from. Not happy with this company and am sharing my story.

I would like to know what your company is doing about all the dogs that are dying and getting sick from your dog food? I am one of those people who lost my dog to your Large Breed dog food in OCtober 2017 and your persons who answered the phone told me that you were not getting any calls of them having diarrhea or vomiting which I later found to be a lie. So I am spreading the word that your company MARS/IAMS lies to consumers. I also think you did a change in ingredients in the food before my dog died. She ate IAMS for 9 years and did good on it till that last bag. Shame on you! Killing animals that trust their owners to buy the good dog food.

Looking everywhere for Imas puppy biscuits, what’s the reason for discontinuing to make them? So many people are wanting them, I gave them to my dogs as puppies and then their entire life. I wanted to get them for our new puppy. What’s the deal?

I am so disappointed is this company. There seem to be a lot of complaints that are going unanswered. My complaint is that I can no longer find the weight control dog biskets that I have been buying for years for my older dogs. Has this product been discontinued? I am currently on hold at your corporate office but hey don’t seem to be in a hurry to answer.

Why can’t I find Iams puppy biscuits ANYWHERE??? That is the only treat my babaies will eat!!!!

Why can’t I find iams dog treats anymore I bought the last two large boxes at pet smart in Naperville Illinois and was told they can’t reorder them . Why did you discontinue them, the small and the large boxes of treats?
Doris Orvis says
I have seven little dogs and I always got the Iam’s puppy treat looking like a bone but are softer than hard treats. They loved them, then couldn’t find them anymore anywhere. Gone just like that. My dogs don’t like the bigger size ones.

I just wanted to let your company know how upset I am that you have decided to discontinue the Iams classic pate’ cat food. I have a very finicky cat that only
likes the Iams classic pate’ beef and
chicken and I’m having a really hard time trying to find anything else that he will eat. I have tried many different brands of pate’ beef and the Sheba beef pate’ also which I think you make but it’s just not the same and he won’t eat any of it. I will try him also on your chicken purfect indulgence but he will not eat any kind of
fish at all and that seems to be mostly what I’m finding in the Iams brand. We
still have a small supply of the chicken
but he’s out of the beef now. I’ve been a loyal customer for May years and not every cat likes fish and probably shouldn’t even eat it every day. It’s really putting a hardship on me to find a replacement and I’m throughly disgusted with the fact that the food he likes is no available.

For many years have purchased Iams cat food that was available in paper bags. I always store the bag in the garage and never had a problem. Recently Iams switched to some sort of plastic bags and now have a problem. some mouse chewed a hole in the plastic bag and then made mess. Why go to a non recyclable bag when we were able to recycle the paper bags. The plastic bags are not recyclable and so your company is contributing to the climate change everybody is talking about. Thsnk you Iams.
I am looking for another product that still uses paper bags.

I called was exactly this complaint. Most corporations now have as a part of their prospectus and annual report their mission with regard to sustainability and corporate responsibility. All they told me was they couldn’t do anything about it when I called. I don’t know about you and I realize there is an expense involved but I am mailing my bag back to corporate headquarters with the CEO’s name on it perhaps he can figure out what to do with it.

I just spoke with a customer service representative from your main 800#, requesting a refund for a 16 lbs bag of Iams Proactive Health- Healthy Adult Original [Best buy date: 8/24/2018, batch 717E2NCH06 21:35, US61591].
The customer service I received was truly excellent. She was polite, prompt, notated all the information I had to offer (batch info and details spurring my request for a refund). After gathering my address, she informed that I should be receiving a refund check for the full purchase amount ($23.00) within 3-4 weeks. I never had to ask a second time.
In the interest of pet safety and your company’s data collection;
I came across a review page, consumeraffairs.com/pets/iams-cat-food.html , with multiple reviews indicating recent health problems (cats throwing up, becoming extremely ill, etc…) mainly after the packaging was switched to the plastic bags this spring (2017). Over the past few months, my cats have had similar symptoms: begun vomiting more frequently, their coats have become clumpy and dull and they’re sleeping more than usual. My older cat has begun to walk a little stiffly. Also, they’re eating much less often and are now avoiding the food.
After reading the reviews below I was skeptical about calling, but decided to do it anyway. I’m glad I did. If every customer service transaction I had was like this, I would be an amazingly happy camper. Thank you for a job well done and for handling my concerns and request in such a conscientious way.

Hello,
I just purchased a 24 pack set of IAMS Purrfect delights – winner winner chicken dinner Flaked in sauce from Amazon. It’s really dark, looks like its almost black in some places. The characters on the bottom of the can, aside from the use by date of 6.20.18 are B03 651C119602 1859. My cats seem to like it and to be honest, the 2nd can I opened was not as bad looking as the first can. Still looks really rather nasty. I use to buy it from Pet Smart and it never looked like this but they quit selling it.
I feed them dry IAMS as well, a combination of the indoor weight and hairball care along with the one for elder cats.
Please advise regarding the flaked chicken dinner. Is this what it’s supposed to look like. I’d ask about the smell but all moist pet food smells bad to me.
Thank you,
DJ

We have purchased Eukanuba for our dog since bringing her home as a puppy. When I opened the last bag, I fed the dog and poured the rest into our empty dog food container. I saw something that looked like a stick and wondered how that got in there. I picked up the “stick” and discovered it was a dead mouse! I was sickened that my dog had already eaten and I could not sleep that night. Since the bag had been sealed, the mouse had to have come from the factory. I didn’t know who to call-the media, the company… I wasn’t looking for attention, just to rectify the issue at hand. I called the phone number on the website and spoke with a woman who instructed me to throw the food out and offered to send me a coupon for a free bag (Was that an intentional insult?). I was thinking a year’s worth of dog food or even a lifetime supply! She also instructed me to contact the company from whom I purchased the food (Place the blame on someone else?). I can send you photos of the bag, identifying information and the dead mouse. While I hope my dog does not get sick, I also hope this does not happen to anyone else, although I am not assured of that, given the representatives response.
I told the woman that was not acceptable, she sent the coupon anyway-for up to a 24 lb bag free (the bags I purchase are 33 lbs.). I am hoping to settle this matter with you and look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Carol

I am writing in regard to you a possibility to help us help you. we have always used ONLY IAMS for our furbabies. In fact my service dog that was 14 years old before he passed was feed IAMS and my old girl Sheeba still eats it. I have a young Rottweiler/Shepard mix service dog who also eats Iams and LOVES it. They of course are not allowed human food due to them being service dogs. And both my husband (who is in remission of prostate cancer and heat problems requiring a defibrillator) and myself with a slue of medical problems including
diabetes and a list of others we put excessive miles on our cars. we just trader a car with 118,000 miles on it. So we travel all over NJ and Philly as well as going on I95 Rt1 The Beltway and 13 and 113. we take road trips often especially to see our mountains and our grand-baby. as you can see we are very very high profile and with having handicapped plates we always park right in front of or near the entrance so everyone see us. Now we had to put Thor on the Healthy weight blend but he is very health and simply gorgeous . He is a rescue and he is a mix with Shepard as well but he draws all kinds of attention so taking him out of a wrapped IAMS car would be wonderful. we are looking to to defray our car payments and insurance as well and I do know that IAMS has been a partner for years in helping disabled people so I am writing you first. My phone number is 856 506 XXXXX or cell 609 501 XXXXX day or night…. I am hoping we can become partners and spread the word of that benefits that IAMS has for furbabies… Thank you….
