Kum and Go can trace its roots back to 1959 when William Krause and Tony Gentle founded the Hamptom Oil Company. This later became the Krause Gentle Corporation and in 1963, the company introduced their first convenience stores at their gas stations.
The name Kum and Go, a play on the word “come” using the Krause and Gentle initials, was adopted in 1975 to unify all of the convenience stores under a single name. Part of the company’s franchise success was due in part to a unique marketing campaign in which they featured the Kum & Go “Gold cup”. The cup was introduced in late 2008 for the holiday season. It featured an 8oz coffee mug for $50.00 and benefitted customers by offering unlimited coffee and soda fountain refills for 2009 at any Kum & Go location.
Company headquarters moved to Des Moine, Iowa, in 1988. The company underwent tremendous expansion in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Today, there are 400 locations in 11 states. Convenience Store News listed Kum and Go as the 23rd largest convenience store chain in 2010.
In addition to gasoline, motor oil, and other automotive supplies, the company is known for its merchandise, which features their logo, including t-shirts, mugs, and baseball caps with built-in bottle openers.
William’s grandson’s Kyle and Tanner Krause are now in charge of the daily operations for the company. Tanner Krause stated in an interview that knowing he is responsible for the livelihood of the more than 5,000 employees of the company makes him think hard before making any major decisions.
With that in mind, Tanner expanded full-time status to more than 2,000 formerly part-time employees, making them eligible for health insurance, paid time off, and maternity leave.
Company headquarters are located at the Krause Center in Des Moine, Iowa.

I walked into the store on 7th Ave in Marion, Ia after order pizzas which were given to me by a kitchen employee for messing up my order and preparing my pizzas 30 -40 minutes before I requested them. I was approached by the general manager, Jennifer Boysen, in front of employees and customers about her dissatisfaction about the free pizzas. She informed me that I needed to go through her or Roxy Hinrichsen, with my complaints. At first, I was shocked and tried to explain to her that the employee offered the free pizzas to me and I didn’t request them. She continued to express herself in front of individuals and I asked if she would step into an area which was more private in order to speak to me. I stated to her that she’s trying to inform me about policy when I’m not the employee. Telling me the policy is null and void if the employee is the one doing it. She proceeded to once again express herself disrespectfully and inform me that I needed to go through her. She stated that I see her every morning and I could have informed her of any problems or concerns. I do stop in this particular store every morning and spend money without any issues. I didn’t understand why she was continually informing me I needed to go through her when I didn’t request free pizzas; they were offered by the employee because she made mistakes. If she would’ve said, before she could offered free pizzas I need to speak with a manager, that would’ve been fine with me. However, she didn’t so having Ms. Boysen continue to express herself to me about something I didn’t have control over in front of customers and employees was just plain wrong. I then asked for the district managers contact information and was informed that she couldn’t give it to me. Instead she gave me a customer service number and a customer service complaint number. After several attempts to get through, I finally called another Kum and Go and requested the manager give the district manager my contact information to contact me directly. The managers who treat customers like they’re scum at some of the Kum and Go stores do so because they know you’re never going to be able to have your voice heard. They can accost you and treat you as if you’ve done something wrong even though you continue to be a loyal customers. As I drove home with my daughter in the car who by the way is with me every morning, I began to tear up. She saw me crying and started crying and said mommy don’t be sad. I told her I wasn’t sad I was piss…. because I was just treated the way most white people treat black people like they don’t matter. I pray and hope someone reads this comment and takes action because everyone deserves to be treated with decency and respect.
