Pet Supplies Plus was founded in 1988 in Redford, Michigan, by Harry Shallop and Jack Berry. This pair of businessmen wanted their pet food and supply store to be more like grocery stores, such as offering wide aisles and display shelves that were full and organized.
This new idea in pet stores was an immediate success. The company offered conveniences that many people wanted, including large parking lots, longer hours of operation, helpful staff, and a wide variety of items to choose from.
Within 5 years, the company opened an additional 30 locations. Franchising began in 1990.
In 2010, the company was purchased by the private equity group Irving Place Capital.
The company currently has 400 locations in 21 states. Many locations offer self-serve dog washes and grooming stations. Pets on a leash are allowed inside the stores.
While online sales of pet items are rising, Pet Supplies Plus remains one of the few pet stores to see sales revenue increasing as many customers want to touch and feel products for their pets before purchasing them.
Company headquarters are located in Livonia, Michigan.

Today I came into the PSP in Saint Clair Shores to witness a groomer put a small dog in a chokehold – my mother and I were in shock. I yelled out to the groomer who ignored me and went to seek the store manager. The groomer continued to wrap his one hand around the dog’s small neck as it whimpered and cried. He was not grooming but staring the dog down as he held its neck tightly. The CEO of PSP is getting a call from me Monday! I’m beyond disturbed!

I brought my toy poodle Tootsie Roll to have her nails clipped also Dremel done. Tootsie also had feet shaved and cleaned. I had asked the girl to also take out the hair from inside her ears. I waited in the store for Tootsie to be done after about 40 to 45 minutes I kept getting up to see what was taking so long. I even said to myself, I hope my Tootsie is o.k. and they have not hurt her. WELL ! they did . Instead of using powder and tweezer to remove the hair this girl to cutting shears to the inside of Tootsie’s Ears and shaved off a whole chunk of her ear and gave her a deep cut. I called for the manager and he took care of the bill, however in my haste I neglected to ask for a receipt to prove that I was there. So I returned and now when I asked for a receipt I was told that they did not have one because I was not charged. I advised that I don’t buy that excuse and this went on for 5 minutes until I said to the manager. ” Look I’ll tell to what you either give me a receipt I’m calling the police. Guess what? I got the receipt. Now, I have to take my Tootsie to the Vet. While I was doing that my fiancée went to the Pet Supplies Plus Store in Wall Township New Jersey to ask the manager for an Incident Report, the manager told my fiancée that they don’t have Incident Reports. HOG WASH !!O.k. so when I get home I called the corporate telephone number to register a complaint. Low and behold there mail box is full and you can’t leave a message even if you wanted to. Well I will tell you what, the buck stops here!
If I have to I will put them on blast with news , Television, and anyone who will listen.

I came into your store, the one on Greater Mack in Saint Clair Shores on Wed.The girl I am reporting, her name is Savanna.I knew the woman she was cashing out and I joked that she was fat and this girl jumped in and said she wasn’t fat and she kept up.I went and did some shopping I get up there and she goes and says the F word.I asked what she said and real cocky she said you heard me. I don’t think you need people like that working at your place. I hope you address this. The manager didn’t think she did anything wrong but he wasn’t on the floor the whole time. If you want to discuss this any further my no. is 586-339-XXXX
