The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. was founded by George Gilman in 1850 as Gilman & Company as a leather tanning business. After Gilman’s father died he entered the coffee and tea business, turning the tanning business over to his brother.
Originally Gilman & Company was a wholesaler, but in 1863 the company entered retail, changing the name to the Great American Tea Company. By acting as both wholesaler and retailer, the company was able to offer low prices and quickly expanded.
In 1878 the company had 70 stores, in 1915 1,600 stores, and in 1925 13,961 stores.
A&P suffered greatly during a backlash against chain stores during the Great Depression, but ultimately survived.
In the 1950’s A&P began a dramatic downward spiral, which began a 50-year fall from the world’s largest retailer to bankruptcy.
In 2000 the company was down to 500 stores. In 2010 with its stock trading at less than $1, A&P filed for bankruptcy. The company emerged from bankruptcy a privately-held company with 300 stores.
Today A&P is a supermarket and liquor store chain. Its liquor stores operate under the name Best Cellars. Its supermarkets operate under the names A&P, Food Basics, The Food Emporium, PathMark, superfresh, and Waldbaums. A&P has 28,500 employees and had $6.7 billion in profit in 2012.
The company filed for bankruptcy in July of 2015 and closed all locations by November 2015, going out of business permanently.

Wow, just read these comments-I was trying to find a product A&P used to sell. Found they are closed & all these terrible experiences people had. I remember shopping at the Grand Ave. store in Baldwin,NY. I had really bad experience there also; many mistakes made at the checkout, TERRIBLE customer service. I finally decided to never return. And I never have (many years). I see I was not alone. Why would a company that once was probably pretty good be allowed to be run down so badly!

As an employee of the closter and marlboro stores. I have never seen such piss poor staff. I worked for people in Marlboro who only cared for themselves. Had a csm namef beth who minulapied the staff to her liking. If you were not in her click you were a piece of garbage how the acme keeps our garbage. Is beyond me. Now im told i am not intitled to my pension and if that is true i will be suing also and making sure that they either give me a job or make due on what is due me

I worked for the A&P in Mt Holly N J. It was remodeled and became Super Fresh. We had get employees and even greater customers. No problems that I know of. I would like to know why I never was a lower to have my retirement pay. I left in about 1993 and was told by a snippy lady in the home office I would receive such and such amount to call when I was retired. Then I called and she said I wouldn’t get any. Didn’t I pay into my retirement? Where did that money go ?

My 17yr old son Tyrell Hurley works at the Baldwin NY store on Grand Ave, he is being harassed by your CSM Debra Evora , I have call your hotline and tried to contact HR with no resolution to this issue or even a phone call. Now he goes in to work today 6/25/2015 and they tell him he’s suspended without given him a reason why? I tried to talk with Debra and she stated she does not talk to people. What kind of managers are you hiring to work for your company? I will be contacting a lawyer, he’s rights have been violated and there are harassment laws that your company don’t seem to be enforcing in your company.

The Pharmacist in charge ( Bruce Beck) over at the drugstore on Franklin Tpk. Mahwah nj, 07430 has smelled strongly of liquor and makes inappropriate sexual comments and I have witnessed him leaving the drugstore alone with a tech. Danielle d’Ercle who is extremely rude and fills prescriptions while the guy pharmacist dissapears down the isles, and she counsels patients on medications that she clearly knows nothing about, because she counseled me on medicine and thank god I checked it when I got home because it was someone else’s meds.
The Great Atlantic Pacific and Tea Company says
It’s Danielle D’Ercole that’s the correct spelling!
The Great Atlantic Pacific and Tea Company says
I was shopping early in the morning and I saw the correct spelling of her name Danielle D’Ercole she was still the same rude woman but this time she was throwing a temper tantrum and crying by customer service, I don’t know how a company can have someone like this work there especially in the drugstore dept. This company really went to trash

Wayne NJ Shopper says
Being a Wayne resident for 35 years and living within walking distance to your Wayne Store, I must say. Your store on Valley Rd over the past years has taken a turn for the worst. I stop in usually on my way home from work to pick items. But would never, ever do a full shopping order there. And here are just a few reasons why.
When you mix high prices, low quality and awful customer service, the only recipe on can get from your store is a recipe for disaster. Since I love to cook, I would much rather do my weekly orders at stores like Shop Rite or Stop & Shop. Your produce dept is perhaps the worst I have seen in any Supermarket. Your meat dept is just awful and over priced. Item for item you are grossly over priced than any of the other stores.
And once I do get what I went in for, then I have to deal with Customer Service (or the lack there of) It amazes me how a store of that size will open only 2 checkouts and sometimes if im lucky there will be 3 open. But yet there will be 4-5 people hanging around the customer service desk. The quality of help is yet another thing. No one greets customers with a pleasant smile or a “hello”. No one says thank you. You company must be really grateful that NJ won’t pass the min. wage increase.
Its such a pleasure to walk into a store and be greeted with a simple hello, or thank you. I frequent the Market Basket in Franklin Lakes often and I don’t mind paying for quality and service. But your store lacks so much. I can only wish that you close that store and hopefully a fine upscale moves into Wayne to take care of the people in Wayne

THE A&P ON 660 MCLEAN HAS A HORRIBLE EMPLOYEE NAMED ALYCE!!
SHE WILL YELL AT YOU IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS FOR NO REASON.
IF SHE HATES CUSTOMERS SO MUCH WHY IS SHE EVEN WORKING THERE????
SHE IS A MISERABLE HUMAN BEING AND DOESN’T BELONG IN GENERAL POPULATION .

I have a complaint about a store manger. I tried calling the union and human resources about the problem. I was told something that I consider to be disrespectful and verbal abuse. When finally receiving a phone call from them they told me because I had failed bob and that I didn’t listen to instructions. I understand I need to work on my skills more but does that give him the right to verbal abuse me and say what he said.
I would like corporates contact because the number listed at my job the food emporium is disconnected.
