Lifetouch History

Lifetouch was founded in 1936 as National School Studios.  Founders Bruce Reinecker and Eldon Rothgeb began to offer school photos to one-room schoolhouses in Minnesota.

By 1950, National School Studios was the largest school photography business in the US.

In 1978, Reinecker transferred 100% ownership of the company to its employees.

In 2011, the company acquired Olan Mills.

Today, Lifetouch operates as several separate divisions including Lifetouch National School Studios, Lifetouch Portrait Studio, Lifetouch Church Directories and Lifetouch Media Productions.

I have been trying to get my son’s class photo since January of 2018 (this is May). I have called numerous times and each time am told that I will receive in 2-3 weeks. The school year is almost over. What do you have to do to get a simple photo? This is disgraceful. My son is graduating in June and does not even have his class photo to look at. I would like someone to contact me on my email quickly please so that I can privately share a phone number for follow up. Thank you.

This company is the worse! After all the complaints I don’t see how schools continue to use them! This is my daughters 1st year of pre-k and she took her school pictures! I come to find out that everyone in her class received their pictures except my daughter! I mean C’mon it’s her 1st year of school. These pictures meant so much to us! I have called everyday and for the worst customer service! Finally I got informed today that They have been unable to locate them and have offered me a refund! Unbelievable! I want her pictures!!!! Shame on this ridiculous customer service!!!

I paid for a portrait package and never received it. I tried calling the 800 number for assistance and had the worst customer service experience of my life. I couldn’t hear the woman because her phone was muffled. When I told her this, she rudely started screaming and asked if I needed an interpreter (she also had a very heavy accent). I asked to speak with someone else and she replied, “Who, President Obama?” After waiting on the phone, listening to her insults for over 10 minutes. I finally disconnected when I realized that she wasn’t transfering me. Now, I have no one to reach out to for my photos. I tried email and twitter to no reply.
I cannot believe that a company would train their reps to treat customers in that manner. I’m still shocked! I will never purchase from them again and I plan on begging out school to find a different company for photos and yearbooks.

I have been calling and asking for my sons senior class picture since April, and I keep getting told that it will arrive in 2-3 weeks. This happens every time I call and I still have not received it. It is very frustrating, if I am not gonna be getting it, just please tell me so and you can stop wasting my time as well as yours?????

I suggest you call the corporate office. I have been waiting for two months for a refund. I just called Lifetouch for the THIRD time demanding my refund. I will be calling the corporate office if that refund doesn’t show up within 10 days.

I ordered pictures from life touch on sept 17, 2017. My daughters pictures never arrived at her school. Lifetouch already charged my visa even though I have not received anything over a month later. When I called them they had no explanation for anything and a person named tyler said it would be at least another 2 weeks but could not tell me why. Not sure what to do as this is both upsetting and rude. I guess the only thing to do is to recommend to the high school not to use this company because of the way they treat customers.

To Whom it May Concern:
I am writing to you to share some issues that I have had with your District Manager Chris Burns and his assistant Lizz Hinch. I have been a long time customer for your preschool portraits program. In the last 2 year the photos have been awful. I have been kind to allow your company to train others while at my program. So needless to say I am surprised that I have been ignored with my complaints by all. I had parents write notes about bad photos they received. But again ignored…. These were 2016 photos…so I emailed Lizz and this is what I received from Lizz on July 19 when I contacted her:

I apologize that we failed to follow through on our promises to you last year. We recognize that our labs struggled but we’ve made significant changes and improvements to prevent those issues moving forward. I’ve ordered a new composite for you with last years images so that should be arriving shortly. I’ve also ordered a Lakeshore Learning Gift Card for you all to use as an apology for the past experience. When Chris and I spoke with you last Fall, we were under the impression that we were to remove future dates, however, we do value your business and would be absolutely grateful if you would allow us another opportunity to show you what we’re capable of. We’ve made promising moves within our own teams and have added some great talent in your area. We hope that you will let us prove how much we value you and your families as your portrait providing partners. I’m happy to do whatever else I can to make this right and to regain your trust with Lifetouch.

I received the composite but never received a gift card. Sadly I don’t want a gift card I wanted something done to correct the situation but feel my company is just so small we just don’t matter. I also emailed back on August 24 2017 to see if there might be dates still available and still no response as of today August 30, 2017.

I have found another company to take our business but felt like someone that should know what is happening within your business. I would want to know.

I took my son into JCPennys to take his photos and they informed me that Lifetouch is the one who hires the photographers. They don’t close until 5 pm and I called at 1:30 to get an appointment around 3, and the guy there stated he didn’t have any appointments, but was rushing us to get in there at 2 because he was going to be by himself once the other man left. I rushed from a different city to get there and when we got there, he did not greet us nor even looked up from the counter. When my son finally went in to take his pictures, he did not want to stand on the red dot in the center. Extremely irate, the guy told me to pick him up or “drag” my son over there. He took ONE picture and turned around and rolled his eyes and said “YOU NEED TO PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY.” Assuming I was taking pictures of the shoot, I showed him my screen because I was texting and he did not want to continue with the shoot. He really just wanted to get us out of there and not do his job by himself. He was extremely dirty too like he hasn’t brushed his hair in weeks.This was in CONCORD, CA at the Sunvalley mall, inside the JCPENNY photo place.

Well Gia, I’ll tell you you’re out of line. Studios are often fully booked ahead of time. Calling at 1:30 and expecting an appointment at 3pm is unreasonable. Most people book days in advance. Do you think you’re someone special that we should drop what we’re doing just for you? You’re lucky that the photographer squeezed you in.
The “red dot” is part of the automated lighting system. The subject MUST stand on the dot in order for the flash system to work. If your kid refuses to follow the photographer’s instructions he can’t take photos. And to be honest we don’t have time fool around with kids that won’t cooperate. You have 15 minutes in front of the camera. You waste that time, you get bad results. And it is company policy that cellphone are not allowed in the studio. Frankly, you should find another studio because you come across as arrogant and selfish.

My aunt who works for the company is illegally going in finding my kids pictures and printing them out to take to my parents who I’m getting a restraining order against. Which she as an employing is not to look up family and print them out. She even said she will lose her job if they find out. Well I’ve called and they’ve done nothing. Will not even call back. Beyond disappointment.

Horible company,
My boys graduate this year may 2017 and ordered cap and gown pictures on their website from my own perssonal account, when two months went by and I still have not received my pictures I called life touch, they informed me that an unknown caller had called in and changed my address so my pictures went elsewhere. Not only that when I told them I was their step mother that refused to help me any further even though I had ordered my pictures from my own lifetouch account and paid with my own credit card.. they told me their biological father had to call, now mind you he is not on my life touch account but they would talk to him but not me.. i was so upset I started to cry because I have never been treated so badly by a company before in my life.. very angry, hurt and disappointed!!

These folks are scum bags on the face of the earth, and they do not care about people special needs or nothing when I have a rare medical condition. They treat their customers like trash and for request my disc my copy cd that night and should be that night no questions ask and, for I could see hard copy or the old fashion way via dark room but no. Especially some one served for their freedoms. I would not used these a-holes ever. Here I am trying to move and want leave pictures to few of my friends before leaving. That is not even possible cause their mental retardation, and keep on pressuring downing loading that does NOT work at all what so ever. I am tired of it when I am moving 19th of this month. I am ready kill myself, for I pay for things and how get treated all the time that is why I have rare medical condition for I have to rely on lazy low life of them jackasses, and that is why do not trust people cause they do not do jobs making of making people happy.

Where to even start. I have ordered pics every year since 2010 when my daughter started kindergarten. I have had a problem every year since then. I ask for my daughters name that she goes by to be put on pics. Put that name on her profile on the order forms, in big black bold letters, and still to no avail wrong name. Well this year I asked for her name and year and no name printed. I am so tired of this. I have spent about $500 plus on school pics, they had spring pics too in elementary school that I bought. I don’t feel like I should have THIS MUCH of an issue. I’m afraid to order anymore pics bc of this..

I sent a email to Lifetouch in Dec/15 asking if I could order the outdoor background with the dual image standing on the right and head shot on the left for the pictures of my 4 grand children. The Lifetouch site does not state you can only create your own package from the background/images they post on their site. I received a response from a Lifetouch C/S Rep. stating to call (800)736-4753 and they could place my order. Jan/16 I called Lifetouch’s customer service and spoke to a rep. I advised him that I wanted to order the 3 sheet package with all the backgrounds being the outdoor tree/leaves with the dual image standing pose on left/ head shot on the right for the 8×10’s and 5×7’s for each of my 4 grand children pictures. He said no problem and repeated back to me exactly what I wanted to order. In addition, as he placed each of the 4 orders, he repeated what he was ordering. So I know he knew exactly what I wanted to order. I received the order in Jan/16 which was completely wrong. The 8×10’s and 5×7’s had a brown building background with the head shot on the left and the standing pose on the right. Jan/16 I sent a email to Lifetouch advising exactly what was ordered and what I received. Jan/16, I received a response from a Lifetouch rep. apologizing for the error and ask me questions I had already included in my email. I sent a response with the information requested back to the attention of the rep. that had sent me the email. I received a response from another rep. requesting different information, so I sent the information to her. I received another response to the this email from yet another rep. He did not even read the emails because he told me I was sent what I ordered. I sent a email again to Lifetouch with the same information I had already sent them. This time I sent a picture with the email of what I received. I received a response from yet another rep. stating Lifetouch does not offer the package I requested. I sent a email and asked why this was not stated up front by one of the two reps I was first in contact with. I received response from another rep offering a free sheet of portraits. Bottom line, if I had been told in the beginning that I could not have the background with the dual image I wanted on the 8×10’s and the 5×7’s, I would have simply thanked the reps and gone online and ordered the outdoor background with the tree and leaves with the standing image. It took 6 different reps responding before I knew Lifetouch did not offer what I requested. Lifetouch needs to clarify on their site under create your own package what you can order or at least train their reps. to give the correct information to the customer in the beginning. In addition, one rep needs to take ownership/responsibility for the inquiry/complaint. I worked for a large company in customer service for 40 years. This is by far the worst and poorest customer service I have ever encountered. I am sure this complaint will not do any good, but I just thought I would add my complaint to the several and I mean several complaints you have online regarding your poor customer service. Oh and yes I will be adding my compliant along with the other complaints against your company with the BBB.

So I am currently employed at lifetouch and apparently we need to be worried. Not only did the company decide to close alot of offices and move everything ops to a central location claiming to save money,but now they are also cutting out achievements that were going to employ for their service (5 yr rings). I am starting to feel that either the company is in big trouble or they really just don’t care about their employees. We don’t get raises because the company is always telling us to do a better job and raise sells to get one. We are considered part time employees and don’t get PTO, Vacation, or holiday pay unless we work a certain number of hours a fiscal year! So no matter how long you’ve been there it goes by hours. Yet they are constantly trying to make sure we get as little hours as possible by hiring more people so nobody gets over time. I’m sorry but after all these years it’s obvious the only they care about is the bottom line.

Yes exactly they don’t care about their employees and it’s a poorly run operation at best. They treat their employees like absolute crap while working them like dogs for a lousy $9.00 per hour. You can work at McDonald’s or Walmart and makes more than that . My daughter was employed there and they have absolutely no appreciation whatsoever for her professionalism,talent, work ethic, incredible personality and excellent customer service. Apparently they do not care no recognize these qualities in their employees. My daughter is a professional and creative photographer who graduated from New York Film Academy. This company does not even deserve her presence. Just recently, after they used and abused her over the holiday season, they terminated her due to another “seasonal” employee who happens to be African american and who accused my daughter of offending her by saying a certain word. This other employee who is the accuser is not a photographer and is untalented individual who just felt like getting someone fired just because she thinks she can throw around the race card. Noone bothered to get my daughter’s version. My husband and I are also witnesses because we met the accuser. Apparently they hire people off the street just to suck up other hard working employee’s hours. Wake up HR – you get to be a good company with GOOD PEOPLE. This company will wind up out of business for their poor attention to detail and misrepresentation of the facts and complete disregard for the truth. We are not walking away quietly. My advice, report them to the Department of Labor, Better Business Bureau etc

It’s a shame that Lifetouch founded in 1936 and became successful as the largest school photography business by its founders is now being run to the ground by incompent management and staff. Obviously the corporation doesn’t care enough to clean up the company and get rid of the trash who run it!!!

I am extremely upset. My children all attend the same Elementary school in Topeka,KS and I got order forms for a picture day that was happening back in Oct. I filled out the order forms chose different backrounds for all my kids paid online delivered the order forms to my kids teachers who then turned them into the person taking the pictures and a few weeks later pictures came in and two of my childrens orders were not completed. In the envelope was a “proof” picture wtih a note stating the pictures were not done because they didnt recieve the order form. I have since been in contact with a rep. from lifetouch informed them all I needed was a email with the choices of backrounds so I can give them the backroudns I wanted and was told they could not do this and that I needed to call a number. I asked what is that going to accomplish I cant see backrounds via a phone call. I havent heard back and its 5 days before that email I sent they were responding every one to two day to my emails. Now its been a month since the original picture day I am still no closer to getting my pictures. My kids school has a makeup day in 3 days Nov 13 2015 and it looks like I will have to fill out a new order form wait two days for the photographer to show up so I can hand him/her the paper and wait another 4 weeks or so for the rest of my photos. I think this is absolutely ridiculous and should be rectified in some way. My family doesnt bust their butts at work to pay for something and not receive the product we paid for.

I am a previous employee of lifetouch. I too am having a problem getting the rest of the money I am owed. Its less than $100 and yet can’t seem to get it. I have left several messages with the person in finance who is responsible for the travel checks and she has yet to return my calls. I would not refer anyone as an employee to this company. They care more about productivity than anything. The photographers do the best they can with 2 weeks of training. Good luck to anyone who decides to work for this company!

Go somewhere else – this company is horrible. They do not hire professional photographers – they hire people off the street with no training or talent. I know because my daughter is a professional photographer who worked there and they did not appreciate her talent or professionalism one bit.

My 15/16 year old daughter was employed by lifetouch and was given 1 option to receive her pay. After all of her hard work and sometimes long hours (some would say illegal hours) (some shifts without proper (legal) breaks) She has not only not received her pay for a portion of her employment because of new card that was never requested by her or her supervisor if that isnt bad enough they upgraded her MONEY NETWORK CARD (upgrade meaning money network took out additional funds for a premiere card with supposed better benifits. to whom the benifits were for you guessed it MONEY NETWORK!!!!1 i HAVE HAD MANY CONVOS WITH MONEY NETWORK TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE AND I HAVE ALSO HAVE HAD MANY CALLS HUNG UP ON MY FACE (SURPRISE SURPRISE) I did try and acquire some help from the Lifetouch corporate human resourses and i thought i was finally going to get the help i needed for my daughter to be paid what she earned. not to my surprise i was wrong i got stonewalled and was eventually told that there was noithing more that lifetouch could do to assist me on doing the morally right thing! paying their employee again a 16 year old girl!!!! so i again tried the only option that lifetouch gave me and that was to deal with MONEY NETWORK again and was given inaccurate info to get to the bottom of this catastrophe!!!! so here I am hoping that someone decent person in the corporate office of this multi BILLION dollar company can see to it that my daughter gets the money she earned in the tune to approx $750.00 (that i am aware of) YES I SAID SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS!!!!!!!!! HUNDRED….NOT THOUSAND OR MILLIONS OR BILLIONS !!!!! SHAME ON THIS COMPANY I for sure will be filing a complaint with any and everybody that i can and also use social media, verbal and whatever resourses to tell the world how a “FAMILY” based business is nothing but A COMPLETE LIE!!!!!!!!!
also will be sending the documents to whomever is interested on the illegal underage shifts and hours my daughter worked
i want to say thank you out of common courtesy but if i type any thing thank wouldnt be the word i would use before the you if u get what im saying

My son graduated from Enloe G. Magnet High school in Raleigh, NC this past June 2014.
Lifetouch sent me an email to order a 8×10 portrait of my son receiving his diploma from his principal. I ordered the photo and Lifetouch took my money. I just recently received a notice in the mail that the image was not clear enough to print and my money would be refunded. I called customer service today 866-688-9143 and spoke with a rep who pulled the image up and she states indeed it was not clear as a result of the photographer taking it. I am VERY disappointed that I will not be able to receive the photo because it is a moment in time that we can never receive because of a mistake your photographer has made. Your company is probably so big that it really doesn’t care but I had to send this response anyway. I am hoping I NEVER have to use your company again and I am hoping after this my friends and family will never have to use your company EVER again. I plan to put this complaint on any website I possibly can and hope that it helps someone else.
