Follett was founded in 1873 in Wheaton, Illinois by Charles Barnes. Barnes opened a used bookstore, using part of his home as a business. After a few years, business improved substantially, so Barnes moved to an office in Chicago, selling new and used books, as well as stationery items. Barnes sold the company in 1917 and later founded what is known today as Barnes and Noble bookstores.

The company was sold to C.W. Follett in 1918 and he renamed it Follett Publishing Company. Today, Follett provides educational technology, textbooks, and digital content to many schools in the US, for kindergartners through high school, as well as material for public libraries. The company is focusing on text rentals, eCommerce, and digital materials.

What began as a home business has grown into a $2.7 billion, privately owned company which provides more than 5 million students with the materials they need for their education. The company employs more than 18,000 people in the US, Canada, and other countries.

In 2016, the company acquired online book seller Valore for an undisclosed amount.

    Hi,
I work for a school district in Rumford, Maine. I have been trying to find out if we have an outstanding invoice that needs to be paid. I have a purchase order (#210408) showing that is still open. I have tried emailing but keep getting an auto response to follow a link to find my field rep. The link does not work. I have had others in this office try the link and we can’t get through. Would someone contact me so we can get this resolved please.
    Thank you

I have been trying to resolve an issue concerning an online order since February. I have asked to speak with the store and a supervisor and to no avail that has not happened. The representatives on the phone do not seem to comprehend my complaint. I’m hoping someone can help me here.

    Dear Follett,

My name is Monica and I work for 1463 Seattle University Campus Store as a team member. I would like to file a complaint about Store Manager, name Marc Parrish for treating employees unfairly.

There are times where I get overwork and called out for mistakes, which is fine. However, he never calls out when the lazy employees not doing their work, being late, or even call out to not work on the spot. However, with my experience as an employee, there are times where I need to urgently call out because I got doctors appointment and he told me that I’m unable to do so because I’m the only opener for the store.

Around November 2018, a car passed me and I got scraped on the knee. I decided to call out for work and Marc’s response was: “I’m unable to accommodate your absence because we’re currently understaffed.” On the other hand, during the inventory day, one staff decided to call out because she was fighting with her boyfriend and Marc let her leave work right away. So I guess, an argument with a boyfriend is more important than calling out sick?

Marc, other workers and I actually had a meeting about him treating employees unfairly and decided to not let that happen again. 6 months later, this issues has been going worse and worse and I cannot stand being taken advantage of because of his bad behavior as a store manager. He’s not the right fit for this job and it’s not fair for the workers who actually do the work.

One good worker actually quits because she can’t stand his behavior as a manager for not giving equal opportunities for all his staffs. If this problem remains unsolved, then all the good workers will actually be gone and the store will remain as a disaster influenced by a bad leader.

Recently, I’ve reported this issue to the Follett Compliance center, for recording purposes.

Feel free to contact me to this email if you have any other question.
    Best,
    Monica
