Yankee Candle was founded in 1969 when Michael Kettredge made his first scented candle using crayons and essential oils as a gift for his mother. Neighbors began asking Kettredge to make candles for them. The company expanded and moved operations from South Hadley, Massachusetts, to Deerfield.
Today, Yankee Candle is one of the biggest manufacturers of scented candles, candle accessories, car deodorizers, and dinnerware in the US. The company had annual revenue in 2013 of $844.2 million. Yankee Candle products are sold in thousands of gift shops and houseware stores, such as Bed, Bath & Beyond, by catalog, on the company’s eCommerce site, and approximately 560 small box stores. Candles are sold in every state of the US and 50 countries.
Yankee Candle was purchased in the fall of 2013 by the Jarden Corporation for $$175 billion.
