Ben Chesler and several friends decided they wanted to find a way to get surplus and ugly produce from farmers to customer homes.
Imperfect Foods was founded in 2015. The company uses a subscription-based service that provides boxes of fresh produce to clients every other week.
While the produce may be misshapen or smaller than is considered normal, it must still be fresh, tasty, and nutritious.
Since its inception, the company has expanded products to include grains, dairy, eggs, and even canned goods.
Imperfect Foods has pledged to become a Net Zero business by 2030.
While consumers may be loathed to purchase produce that isn’t perfect looking at their supermarket, they will gladly pay more for produce that is labeled as “ugly”, one researcher noted in February 2021.
