Cook Out restaurant was founded in 1989 in Greensboro, North Carolina by current owner Morris Reaves. The company operates a chain of burger restaurants in 10 states. Cook Out is family-owned, with Jeremy Reaves, son of founder Morris Reaves, working as CEO.

In October 2019, the city of Greensboro was investigating a Cook Out location for possible illegal dumping when an employee was found to be washing greasy dishes and dumping the dirty wash water onto the ground near a local creek.
