Allianz is a German multinational financial services company with worldwide headquarters in Munich.
Allianz was founded in 1890 by Carl von Thieme and Wilhelm von Fink as a marine and accident insurance company.
In 1900 Allianz became the first insurer to obtain a license to distribute corporate policies. By 1914 the company had expanded to the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, France, the Scandinavian countries, the Baltic States and the United States.
Allianz began to offer fire insurance in 1905, machinery breakdown policies in 1911, and automobile insurance in 1918.
After World War II Allianz headquarters was moved to Munich because the original headquarters was destroyed during the war.
From the 1970’s to the 1990’s Allianz strengthened their position in Europe while expanding into new markets, such as Spain, The U.K., and Hungary.
Today Allianz operates in over 70 countries, has 180,000 employees, and has over 76 million customers worldwide. Allianz services include property and casualty insurance, life and health insurance, and asset management.
