The company was founded by Arthur Edward Stilwell in 1887 with the goal of connecting Kansas City to the Gulf of Mexico. In 1930 Kansas City Southern added routes to Louisiana. No further expansion happened until 1993 when a route was added from Dallas, Texas to Meridian, Mississippi.
Today Kansas City Southern has a network of over 6,000 miles of rails from Missouri to Mexico. The company operates three main rail lines: Kansas City Southern Railway (KCSR), KCS, and KCSM.
