Variety Wholesalers History

Variety Wholesalers was founded in 1930 by the Pope family. John Pope took over the family business in 1949 and began expanding the company to include numerous stores in the southeast including Roses, Roses Express, Maxway, Super 10, Bargain Town, Bill’s Dollar Store, and Super Dollar.

Today, the company owns more than 380 locations and employs almost 8,000 persons. Variety Wholesalers is still privately held by the Pope  family. Current CEO is Art Pope. Vareity Wholesalers is headquartered in Henderson, North Carolina.

The company is made up of 3 main divisions; Roses stores, which consist of 160 locations. Roses stores are discount stores that average more than 50,000 square feet. Second are the Maxway stores, with 135 locations that mainly sell juniors clothing. Super 10 make up the last division, with 85 locations. These stores also operate under the names of Bill’s Dollar Store’s and Bargain Town. Most Super 10 stores are no more than 5,000 to 10,000 square feet.

For months, I have been trying to purchase one of the square Red Copper frying pans that are advertised, for $10.00, on a regular basis in your flyer. No matter how often I check on them, they are never available. I have actually left my name and number, to be contacted when it arrives. I wasn’t sure if it’s not considered ‘false advertising’ to continue to advertise items that are never going to be available in the stores. I would like to purchase one of these frying pans, directly from you, since this seems to be my last resort. Please get back with me ASAP with the necessary information that I need to complete this transaction. I am very anxious to FINALLY get my frying pan. Thank you. Rebecca White

I’m right thing to say that I’ve been doing retailing for over 40 years and I have never been treated with such disrespect you know my life DM is making us work six days a week.last week I worked 77 hours in one week this week the young girl here has worked 87 hours in one week and we get not one complement in fact we get sick to our stomach’s come Sunday when we know he’s going to be there Monday so so I’m waiting for a job offer to called me and I’m leaving I’m not even give them a two weeks notice because the way they treated us the way they treat that the store manager is a shame we don’t get no sick days personal days not lying take him that’s why we get paid for that gives us no complements whatsoever
tells everybody the managers business which I think is Any our business that she didn’t get a raise that’s between to him and her I just want to say that I am leaving the company is only because of him and the morale in that store rock Hill South Carolina I’m sure he’ll get this one you don’t jump on Lora because I sent a text

05/05/2017- I was shopping at your Roses Express Store, 502 Pearl St, Darlington SC and I was have trouble finding what I was looking for. I came across the Manager, her name tag had LISA LEWIS on it. While speaking with her, her cell phone was ringing. She told me to hold on and walked away. About 10 minutes later, still looking for what I needed went to ask her again. She was standing by the back wall still talking on her phone. She was setting up a date with someone, too busy to help me. I walked away in frustration. She then walk outside and began having a good old time with to girls. I went back in to complain and was told by the Assistant Manager, that she was hangout with her daughter and her daughters girlfriend, I was told That’s all she does, talks on her cell phone and hangs outside with her family members and a guy friend. This Assistant Manager helped me find what I was looking for. It took her 2 minutes to help me. There was only 1 out of 4 registers open so the line was back up down the shampoo isle. Now, I’ve been in this store for about an hour now for 2 items. Walking outside this same Manager LISA LEWIS was still having a good old time outside even after other customers complained. I will not shop at this store ever again and will let my friends and family know to shop elsewhere, If that’s what your company has to offer as Great Customer Service. This Manager Lisa Lewis Needs to be fired…

On March 4th,2017,the store is located in the Westside shopping Center on hwy 80 in garden city ga,approx.between 12:30pm and 2:00pm,i Was a customer in the store,looking at your display of dresses on sale,the manager of the store was very rude and unprofessional with one of the employees,she said very loudly ,(you have and attitude and if you don’t want to be here you need to go home,in my opinion,the employer should have been reprimanded in the office,not on the floor,the employee was so embarass,

Didn’t know that you couldn’t return undergarments if i had known i wouldn’t have purchased just purchased about 20.00 worth of bras on 2-9-2017 couldn’t try on at the store no fitting room .And they still have the tag and i still have the receipt.

I work at store #667 been trying to view my check stubs but the website one of the mangers gave me isnt correct. I really need them its so frustrating, if someone could tell me where to go to veiw them it would be greatly appreciated.

Regularly go by Roses in Zebulon, NC. Usually get the spring water. Never is there any spring water on the sales floor. Always need to ask someone to get it from the back storeroom. Don’t you think you would sell more and have better customer service if items were on the sales floor for customer to readily get ??

Why isn’t there a contact number or direct email address to contact your company of a have a concern regarding an experience at one of your stores? There was a pink sign on your electronic cabinet that said DVD 14.99 (a $24.99 value), there was no such product in that cabinet nor a price barcode stating that product ever existed. I have photos that I can send in a regular email. Also, that 7″ 5.1 Polaroid Android internet tablet as advertised $49.99 ($59.99 value) is not a sale price because the regular price is $49.99. That’s a problem with me and should be with you. Feel free to contact me so we can resolve this issue.

We citizens here in Jacksonville, FL are having a illegal problem with your management team at your Roses on Lem Turner Road. We citizens have sent something to the Federal Government in Washington, DC and we may have to file a class action lawsuit against Rosrs if the corporate office doesn’t get on top of their jobs concerning their own staff.
