The Topps Company manufactures candy, chewing gum, and collectibles. The company is best known for its baseball cards, football cards, basketball cards, hockey cards, and other trading cards.
Topps was founded in 1938 as American Leaf Tobacco. The company decided to diversify after World war II. Chewing gum was chosen after fresh produce was considered and rejected.
In 1951 Sy Berger designed the Topps 1952 baseball card set, and is now considered to be the “father of the modern baseball card.”
Today Topps distributes and markets the famous Bazooka bubble gum and makes trading cards featuring sports stars from the NBA, NFL, and MLB.
Topps also makes cards based on movies, TV shows and entertainment properties including brands like Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
Topps’ products are sold worldwide. The company is owned by Madison Dearborn Partners and Tonante.
