Stage Stores was founded in 1988 as Specialty Retailers, Inc. (SRI).
The company grew by acquisitions, including Palais Royal, Bealls, and Fashion Bar in 1992. Fashion Bar had 71 stores, some of which were specialty stores named Stage Stores.
SRI kept the name of Stage Stores after the acquisition.
Today Stage Stores operates 835 stores in 40 states, mostly in rural areas. The stores are operated under the names Peebles, Bealls, Stage, Palais Royal, and Goody’s Family Clothing.
The retailer sells apparel, accessories, footwear, and cosmetics. Big national brands such as Levi Strauss and Ralph Lauren are sold in the stores.
Stage Stores is traded publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SSI, is a member of the S&P 600, has 14,700 employees, and had $1.63 billion in revenue in 2013.
