PepsiCo History

The recipe for the soft drink Pepsi was developed in the 1880s by Caleb Bradham. He created the Pepsi-Cola Company in 1902 and registered for the recipe patent in 1903.  The company went bankrupt in 1931 and was bought by Charles Guth.

Charles Guth was the president of Loft, Incorporated, a leading candy manufacturer with a large chain of restaurants and candy shops. He used Loft’s chemists to reformulate the syrup and contracted to stock soda in the restaurants, which were known for their soda fountains.

In 1935 Loft’s shareholders sued Guth for his 91% stake in the company. Loft won the lawsuit and as a result the company formally absorbed Pepsi in 1941 and it was rebranded Pepsi Cola Company.

In the 1960s Pepsi’s line of products expanded with the creation of Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew.

In 1965 the Pepsi Cola Company merged with Frito-Lay and became PepsiCo, Inc.

From the 1970s through the 1990s PepsiCo  expanded by acquiring new brands outside of its core business of packaged food and beverages. It later sold these brands to refocus on the core business. Examples of these brands are Pizza Hut, KFC, California Pizza Kitchen, and Wilson Sporting Goods.

These large divestments were followed by acquisitions, notably of Tropicana Products in 1998. PepsiCo merged with Quaker Oats Company in 2001, which added the Gatorade sports drink line

In 2010 the company completed a $7 billion acquisition of its two largest bottlers in North America.

Today PepsiCo has 22 product lines that generate retail sales of $1 billion each. By net revenue, PepsiCo is the largest food and beverage business in the United States and second largest in the world. PepsiCo has 300,000 employees worldwide, is part of the S&P 500, and had $65 billion in revenue in 2012.

I have spoken 3 times with PepsiCo. I have been told someone would get back to me regarding my request. I would like to purchase 20,000 32 oz Gatorade bottles. Drop ship to my Calgary, Alta Canada warehouse.
Would someone communicate with me?

I grew up in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada which was the home of Niagara Dry Beverages. In the late ’60’s or early 70’s that company was taken over by Pepsi in Canada. I have been a major collector of Niagara Dry memorabilia for some time. In the late 1930’s there was a corporation out of Buffalo, NY that incorporated under the Niagara Dry name as well but that company ceased to operate in early 1940’s and officially closed in 1950, I believe. But, I have now also come across New Century Beverage that advertised Niagara Dry Pale Ginger Ale. This company apparently sold to Pepsico.

Is there a “Pepsi Historian”; someone with whom to communicate on these matters? Thank you for your consideration.

I am 63 yrs old had my first Pepsi product at the age of 13. Now I buy 10 to 12 case’s of diet Pepsi a month. Note I said buy . I have always bought my only pop in the world to drink. So now I’m retired I watch my money and buy the best sales. I found Dollar General in Brooklyn, Wisconsin, I live in Oregon Wisconsin. I seen an ad for 18 pack of Pepsi on sale $5.Great. I called the store to check to see if they had diet Pepsi no so they ask salesmen. No problem he had it in 20 packs . Great news for me so I ordered 12 . I ask if I preordered if I could lock the price in Dollar General said and so did salesmen. Great I can save some money on my Social Security. Now after 2 months. Both parties are giving me a song and dance. I can’t get my pop. Neither party has told me the truth. Can’t do it any more no more 20 packs the truth . So I will always buy my diet Pepsi . But I don’t like being lied to. I bet in 50 years I’ve help make someone a fat pay check .Not happy with either party. . Mary a Price

I am a 56 year old retired male who is looking at getting back into the job market. I had an “interview “ 2/21/18 in Pleasant Prairie, WI with Jeff. The “interview “ was me watching a 10 minute video of your Company and Jeff reading to me from a script. Jeff then told me there is a hands on excercise using a dolly. I explained that I had never used a dolly which Jeff showed me how to operate it. Jeff told me to move the dolly and remove only the soda cases that I needed to stock a display. Jeff said the exercise was timed and gave me 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes were up I didn’t stock the display entirely. Jeff told me the interview was over, thanked me for my time and escorted me out. Is this how a multi billion dollar global company conducts interviews? Very unprofessional and highly disappointed by Jeff’s lack of being personable. Never once did ask what I could do to help Pepsi be better or my qualifications. The entire “interview “ was based on how quickly I could load and unload a pallet. This “interview “ process can best be described as a joke! Step up your game Pepsi and get into the 21st century.

I have been a Pepsi drinker for 30 years and I’ve stopped drinking Pepsi. Yes it has to do with the NFL and I don’t care what anyone says. I will always support our police before criminals. I would like to see anyone put on the uniform and go risk your life for people that hate you and want to kill you. If all these people wanted justice you think they would be trying to find justice for the 500 murder victims in Chicago. It’s all about getting there name out. So if they can’t stand united then you will lose my money. I’m sorry it comes to this. Tsk joe

MCGEE October 2, 2017 at 5:16 pm

I am a retired Master Sergeant of the USAF. The comments are not clear. The NA and playing of the NA has nothing to do our great country. It’s has everything to do with law enforcement murdering US citizens of all colors and back grounds. Some fallen citizens are considered innocent until proven guilty. The Missouri case, Minnesota case, Florida Case, Louisiana Case, New York Case, DC Case and others should have been arrested and taken to jail whereas, the Judge would decide what to do with the citizen. We have laws to protect all US citizens including the police officers. Some good people needs to understand what its means to have a love one murder and then are excused from the legal process are during.

S Martinez September 26, 2017 at 8:12 pm

Done with Pepsi products! So long as you sponsor the NFL we are done!
Disgraceful the behavior of these multi million dollar players. They get paid to play a game for entertainment, as veterans, we have zero desire to be insulted.

Bob McLaughlin September 25, 2017 at 8:08 pm

I’m done with PepsiCo Products!!!
You sponsor the NFL, and you’re NOT holding THEM responsible….so I’m holding YOU responsible!!!
The good ‘old USA has allowed you to prosper phenomenally!!! You’d NEVER have succeeded ANYWHERE else in this world.
Back up this country, and demand The NFL workplace “smartens up”!!!

Sharon September 25, 2017 at 1:42 am

I understand that you are a sponsor of the NFL…. as long as the players of the NFL refuse to STAND for the playing of our National Anthem… my family and I will NOT support your company, and we will also be urging our friends to do the same… We ask you to pull your sponsorship while this disrespect continues…

We are a family who has sent our young men of patriots to serve this country in peace time as well as war time – all the way back from the Revolutionary – through the OIF Wars… All veterans have risked everything to give the people of America the rights of freedom, including the privilege to watch NFL games in peace… Most of these players make more in one year, than most people make in a life time… The fans pay hard earned money to watch an entertainment game…

I also want to add, that several years ago, the NFL would NOT allow Tim Tebow to take “knee” to pray before a game. The same should hold true to those who decide to take a knee in disrespect to our USA…

We acknowledge that there is a 1st Amendment right in the USA… but please realize that we, as customers, have the same right.

Please do the right thing and support the USA that protects you and yours everyday – 24/7

Max Day September 8, 2017 at 6:13 pm

Will be steering clear of PepsiCo products again this year. As sponsors of the NFL [whose players appear to hate my families traditional American ways, and the country that made them millionaires] we dont feel it appropriate to spend our hard earned American dollars buying products that sponsor politically shallow, snowflake millionaires.

I have purchased Aquafina Water for years. Now someone had the bright idea to change the bottle design. The bottle cap is half the size. It cannot be trusted; it leaks if it accidentally tips over or if you accidentally squeeze it to hard. The new bottom of the bottle doesn’t allow the bottle most of the time to sit straight – it leans, again, not trustworthy. I will now have to find someone else with more trustworthy bottles because I won’t be buying these terrible ones again. Whoever in Marketing had this idea should be kicked in the butt.

Sandra Jones September 25, 2017 at 12:05 pm

I will no longer buy any products of Pepsi. N.f.L can protest on their on time. The moment they put on team clothes they are working. I hope others will do the same.

Patrick Wm Coil November 16, 2016 at 10:12 pm

I am so proud of Indra for her comments regarding the president-elect. The election’s out come does not change the facts of his expressed comments regarding women, citizens/immigrants, religious minorities, minorities and those with different political philosophies. It takes leadership to express our companies core values, make it perfectly clear these values will continue going forward, regardless of the president-elect’s stated beliefs. And to ensure all PepsiCo employees, from the Board Room, Headquarters, drivers, manufacturing and warehousing people Indra cited the president-elects’ unacceptable statements anathema to PepsiCo core values. Indra is thinking beyond some momentary daily stock quote. She is thinking how will history jugde her? How will history judge PepsiCo? For in the final analysis we must all face the mirror’s reflection of our actions/decisions and answer did I/we stand up for what is inherently right? Or did I/we continue to sit and abandon one’s core beliefs. Indra as one who worked for PepsiCo years ago and who is a stock holder, l have never been prouder to say “YES” I worked at Pepsi. Thank you for standing up!

daniel nation November 16, 2016 at 8:49 pm

I’ve been drinking Pepsi for probably 40 years. This CEO of yours is fu of s###. I will never buy another Pepsi product ever again. Pepsi go f### yourself.

Marilynn Johnson November 15, 2016 at 10:50 pm

Hello My name is Marilyn I was trying to reach someone in your cooperate office about an issue Indra Nooyi, Would be a good candidate to talk to about the issue I’m having and it is not concerning politics lol thank you.

Janice Nichols July 31, 2017 at 12:18 pm

I have always bought Aquafina water at Sams Club. I wanted to buy it today and you have changed the cap to that little, tiny, skinny cap and my water bottle holder will not fit that skinny cap and bottle neck. Please go back to the original cap and bottle neck you had! Those skinny little caps are a disgrace. I won’t buy any bottles with that skinny little cap so I won’t buy Aquafina anymore either. Please go back to the original caps.
Thank you,

Mary Ann Turner November 15, 2016 at 11:50 am

I am livid. How dare your CEO get involved with this election?! Did she consider that the people in this country would feel differently than all the liberals up in Purchase, NY.? As the CEO major corporation, she has absolutely no right to create a situation which affects those of us who own Pepsi-Co stock and the truck drivers and bottlers, etc. The number of people her comments affect are many. She should keep quiet about her feelings on this election and stick to her job. Tell her to look at the red on the election map all over the US, and think about the people out in the country she has affected with her remarks. It’s absolutely disgusting. I truly believed she was smarter than this.
When I see on social media that people are calling for a boycott of Pepsi-Co, I’m sickened.

Kathy Sevens November 15, 2016 at 10:58 am

I am urging PepsiCo to replace Indri K. Nooyl as your CEO. She spoke for all PepsiCo when she said/put down the President elect. It is a free country….you can think whatever you want, but she is including the company when she speaks out in the media. PepsiCo is going to be hurt by her attitude. If she doesn’t like the American way, then she should leave Purchase NY & return to India. With all he unrest in America, she is only adding fuel to the fire. Can PepsiCo withstand a boycott? I belong to an investment club & we have some PepsiCo stock….we may have to reconsider our investment.

Mary Ann Turner November 16, 2016 at 10:19 pm

I am so disappointed in what she has done to a company I love and which has been a part of my family for years! How dare she? And to get no response from her or them makes it even worse! This is not right that she create a situation where she has hurt her shareholders and those who work for a great company with her own opinions just because she lives in liberal NY when most of the people who work for Pepsi live in the heartland of the US, I’m totally sickened by her acts. She can vote for whomever she wishes, but she should leave it out of our business because it affects US.

Why does Pepsi allow the government to tax their product like the government did with the tobacco industry? I refuse to pay a carbonation tax, and I love Pepsi. The overreaching taxation of the government will only get progressively worse as we have seen with the tobacco industry. Please put an end to this unfair taxation of your product. Until then, I refuse to buy your product. You can blame yourself for not keeping government out of your business.

I recently answer an ad that would paying me $500.00 a week to put a Pepsi ad on my vechicle, for two months, they stated they will send me $1,500 by check, and deposit the check into my bank acct:, keep $500.00 for first week pay, and send the remaining balance $1000.00, back to them by western Union, for further instructions.
Bottom line is this legite, by PEPSI.

Well, here I am savoring my very last can of Diet Pepsi before switching over to Diet Coke. I have been one of your biggest supporters since saccharin was in the beverage!! Since you’ve decided that Suralose was wanted by so-called “Popular Demand”, and to take out Aspertame, I must switch. I get severe headaches from Sucralose (Splenda). I feel as if a dagger has been thrust in my heart. I have always admired the American colors, the Red, White, and Blue. But now I must change.
Goodbye and Thank you for many years of great flavor and pleasure :*

This was my last choice to share this concern but I see no other option. My husband, a 10+ year employee was placed on what he was told was a 3 day leave for a verbal disagreement with another vendor. He was told by warehouse manager and his supervisor he would be contacted in 3 days. Finally, 9 days later after not receiving a call and being unable to reach the HR contact Natalia Johnson because her Voice-mail is full, which it still is as of this day he contacted the speak up line simply in hopes of receiving an update. Next day miraculously his supervisor sends a text that HR responded, would he like to do it that day or Monday (do what??). He ended up being terminated with absolutely of communication from HR. We are still trying to reach Natalia for his personnel file and cannot. How can a company this size operate so against the employee? Isn’t HR supposed to be impartial? And I find it interesting the termination decision came after contacting the Speak up line…retaliation? This termination was based on the use of 1 inappropriate word, yet my husband had endured several years of supervision under a man who openly degraded members of the team and spoke so disparagingly to them including the use of profanity. HR investigated that twice based on other coworker complaints yet miraculously that man is still in his position.

Why have you taken the Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi out of the cooler shelves at Walmart in Cleveland, TN? I’ve contacted Walmart about it & they told me that your company are the ones that decided that. There a lot of your consumers that like dark sodas that are caffeine free & diet at the same time. Your vendors were stocking the coolers with it just a few months ago & then all of a sudden stopped. Would you please start restocking the coolers with it.
Thank you,

They gave us an expired 2013 syrup product! I am trying communicate and resolve the problem, but no one is able to help, listen, and communicate with us. They don’t know if they have a Customer Service email address and they don’t check their emails! I wish their business will be shut down!

i see I’m not the only one complaining about your customer service and your company refuses to reply …well I’m not one to sit quietly I will wait until Monday the 15 of Dec.2014 If I don’t get a response I will have to take it to the next level. My lawyer asked me to be patient so I will until the 15th

PEPSI SUPPORT IS A JOKE THEY ARE AS BRAINLESS & INCOMPETENT as is permitted by the company the allows them hired! They are overpaid, anything over $1.00 for the entire staff is too much since they are essentially worthless as a service to help the customer!

You’ll be back buying these items within 6 months…

Don’t beleive everything you read on the internet. 90% of the time 50% of it is made up or false.

Hello Pepsi Co. I am a great fan of Pepsi and need to ask if this post is true (see link).
It floated on to my Face Book page. I truly hope is just a false accusation.
Please advise
